  1. Finished the syllabus for my first ever #Course that I’ll be #Teaching in winter. Took SO MUCH work as I tried my best to put a lot of thought and care into it. I hope it’s received well ☺️ #teaching #pedagogy #coursedesign #socMastodon #SocMasto #sociology #family #sociologyoffamily

  2. I'm (unexpectedly) going to get to talk to grad students about work life balance tomorrow. I am deeply dedicated to maintaining said balance. But I'd love to hear ideas, resources, strategies that you've found helpful in achieving your own version of academic work/life balance!

  3. Looking for #data: Does anyone know of a #survey which includes a question about what is perceived to be a valid reason to #immigrate? So something like who is perceived to be a "deserving" #immigrant? Importantly I am curious about #surveys which include < the impact of #climatechange > as a reason. #sociology #socmasto #academia

  4. For those setting up their {#academicmastodon
#sociodon, #sociolodon #socmasto #demography} profiles, I found the below tips helpful! (I also found @andrew's profile a super useful example for how to set things up over here) 👇

  5. On a side note: While we‘re still discussing whether #sociodon, #sociolodon, or #socmasto is the way to go for sociologists, astrophysicists have already wrapped up and won the battle.

They’re going by the hashtag #Astrodon here and i think they all sound like Marvel heroes now.

  6. Moving to #Mastodon is a pain because it’s hard to find people. What have I done thus far to track down my connections?

I used fedifinder.glitch.me with some success. Another really helpful way to find people has been scholar.social/@hendrikerz/109.

Still a long way to go but those are a start (those and also a lot of procrastination in the form of going through other people’s #Mastodon feeds to find people to follow). My main fear is that discovering people “at random” will be harder here but let’s see. #Sociology #socmasto

  7. OK, trying the mandatory #newbie thing: An #introduction.

I'm a #sociologist at #TilburgUniversity in the #Netherlands & study how contemporary adults 'do' #family which yes, is a very broad area of interest... An example of one project I'm busy with right now: examining #childfree motivations & whether #fertility transitions are related to societal #pessimism / #fear of the future. #socmasto

  8. #introduction after migration from another #instance to @fediscience.org : I am a sociology prof at University of Turku, Finland. My research interests are in intergenerational socioeconomic attainment and family demography, plus everything else empirically observable you can link with equality of opportunity. Most of my research concerns social intergenerational pathways, but recently quite a bit of my focus has been on gene-environment interactions #sociology #socmasto

  9. Open science and public trust in science: Results from two studies
Survey and experiment-based findings from 2 German general pop. samples finds evidence for the positive effects of open science practices (e.g., making materials, data, and code) on trust. #sociology #socmasto

  10. Hello!

It's great to see many familiar faces here at Mastodon - and some new ones as well. It'll be an interesting social as well as technological experiment to observe if this can really grow to replace The Birdsite #twittermigration

I'm a sociologist at the University of Konstanz, working in the fields of political sociology, social networks and theory of (world) society. I'm also interested in computational methods. Feel free to connect!

  11. High SES parents are probably more likely to use libraries to borrow books for their children.

But are they also more likely to prioritize developmentally appropriate books that are likely to help children improve their reading skills?

I study this with awsome 🇩🇰 library registry data

I find that high SES families use libraries more, but do not prioritize developmentally appropriate books in particular 📚
