I made a community WebMention thing
I created the website OpenMentions so there would be a collection of topics you could freely mention to tell other people you wrote something about a topic they are interested in. Anyone can use it.
OpenMentions has been around for a while, but I thought I’d bring it up again to get the word out.

The #SundaySlice was a bit late today, owing to me making #kimchi as well. I've never made kimchi before, and it's kinda terrifying to just shove a bunch of cabbage in a jar and then leave it out to ferment. I'm not 100% sure that I'm not going to just end up with poisonous slime. So for the slice I went with a trusted old recipe. This is from the wonderful Woman's Weekly biscuit and slice book. It's in the "healthy" section, and true enough, unlike most slices and biscuits doesnt contain truckloads of butter, and is kinda high in protein. I used to make it for kid's lunchboxes, where it got eaten, but was by no means a favourite. Too healthy. It's quite middle eastern tasting with the sesame, I usually add some tahini to it but the spot at the back of the fridge where the tahini jar lives was empty. I also add baking powder to make it a bit lighter. I remembered as I was putting it in the oven that subbing some honey in for the sugar is nice. Next time.
Read the #altText on the second image for the full recipe and notes.

Sunday slice #2. Based on the recipe here, https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/chocolate-caramel-slice/e809e9d7-1091-4262-ac89-b9b412f23b06?r=baking/2mwdj93e
I added a teaspoon of miso to the base, subbed actual caramel for the golden syrup in the caramel layer, and made the top out of straight dark cooking chocolate with added Dutch cocoa, no copha.
Making caramel is easy, you just put some white sugar in a stainless steel saucepan (don't use non-stick, it gets too hot) and put on medium heat, and stir until you regret your life choices, and the sugar melts, and stir some more just until it goes, well, caramel colour. Then immediately remove the heat.
I tried mixing this straight into the condensed milk mixture which was stupid, because it immediately solidified. I should have added the butter to the caramel and a small amount of water and boiled it until it dissolved, and then added the condensed milk and cooked it down. But it worked in the end, just with a lot more stirring.
I might try making a #vegan version, maybe thickening the caramel with tapioca starch or something.

More #climbing gear, hot off the Bernina. A chalk bag for lead climbing, to match the bouldering one I made a while ago. I'm particularly proud of the attachment system. Two Velcro straps that loop through the back gear loops on my harness, meaning that it stays where you want it, and the Velcro is swapped on each loop so you can use it as a single loop if you need. This is an iteration of the last one I made, but with chonkier fabric. #sewing #IDidAThing

Still on my #sewing bullshit with heavy-duty backpack fabric. Have you ever seen how much #bike frame bags cost? This one has two zipped compartments, and a side pocket for my glasses. I might start putting the patterns I make up on my blog, but until then let me know if you want a copy. #IDidAThing #IMadeAThing

This morning I wrote a PHP implementation of the Open Heart Protocol. It was refreshingly easy.
Next up: A nicely behaved AJAX front end.

I usually go and buy a new computing device once every 6 years or so. This year my trusty Late 2017 Apple MacBook Pro i5 8GB/500GB is officially sunsetted. While I’ve been eyeing a new Macbook to take its place, it would be one of the newer Apple Silicon M2 joints. But I really want to jump back into doing all my computing in Linux full time and also game more so… I’m taking a chance here.
I’ve always dreamed of a modular laptop since it’s kind of the only way I can get the specs and ports I want. Framework makes it possible by having this form factor that should never be obsolete; all the parts are user serviceable and replaceable including the motherboard, ports, screen, keyboard, and so on.
My config is the 16 inch Ryzen™ 9 7940HS – Radeon™ RX 7700S – 180W. That’s right, there’s a kick-ass discreet graphics card in there and it’s user swappable! Whenever the new hotness comes along, or other modules like an extra battery or whatever is needed, its a simple 10 minute swap out needing only a screwdriver (which is also included).
The bad news: I gotta wait until Spring 2024. The good news, I can save up the rest of the money by Spring 2024– this thing IS NOT cheap; about $1000 more than my current Mac was when I bought it new in 2017. BUT it will basically become the workhorse PC as I plan on using it for work, home-labbing, and gaming. Any tool you use to make your livelihood off of should have no expense spared (within reason.)

Project update: made the addition for a banner. Each time we hold the event, we add that year's patches.
It took 45 min to make a framed rectangle, even with notes from the last time. I need to get used to things just plain taking time.
So: 4 parts (shirts, bags, bandanas, patch), all done. The guests arrive Thursday. Yayyyyy!

This Watchy project has turned out to be a totally refreshing creative outlet for me. I’m loving the form factor and constraints imposed by the black & white 200x200 screen.
I’ve been tinkering and designing obsessively with it all week and even managed to get this Captn Wednesday face pushed out to GitHub and a corresponding pat-on-the-back from the SQFMI🤠https://github.com/b-bayport/watchy_captnwednesday
