I am 100% overpacking on the survival gear for this "camping" trip. (It's bunk beds. But maybe I should take a mini ground mattress if they're hard?) As long as it fits in the small duffel, I'm sure I'm ok! Right?

A principios del siglo XX, el movimiento de las Girl Scouts of the USA ya se estaba expandiendo por Estados Unidos.
Había sido fundado en 1912 por Juliette Gordon Low con la idea de enseñar a las niñas habilidades prácticas, liderazgo y autonomía.
Sin embargo, en muchos lugares del país —sobre todo en el sur— la segregación racial impedía que las niñas afroamericanas participaran.Según la organización, existían algunas tropas formadas por niñas afroamericanas desde alrededor de 1917 en el norte del país.
Pero en el sur la situación era muy diferente.
Allí fue donde apareció una figura clave: Josephine Groves Holloway.Holloway nació en Carolina del Sur a finales del siglo XIX y en 1919 se trasladó a Nashville, Tennessee.
Decidida a estudiar, trabajó y ahorró para poder pagarse la universidad.
En 1923 se graduó en Sociología en la Fisk University, una de las universidades afroamericanas más prestigiosas del país.Tras terminar sus estudios comenzó a trabajar en el Bethlehem Center, una institución comunitaria que ofrecía apoyo y educación a jóvenes y familias trabajadoras de Nashville.
Allí empezó a trabajar directamente con niñas, y fue entonces cuando descubrió el programa de las Girl Scouts.Ese mismo año asistió a una formación en el George Peabody College for Teachers para convertirse en líder scout.
Durante esa capacitación fue reconocida como capitana o líder, lo que le permitió empezar a organizar actividades para niñas afroamericanas.En 1924 logró formar las primeras tropas de Girl Scouts para niñas negras en Nashville.
El interés fue enorme desde el principio: comenzó con más de 150 niñas organizadas en diez tropas, y en pocos meses el número creció hasta superar las 300 participantes.Pero el contexto social no era fácil.
En el sur de Estados Unidos seguían vigentes las leyes de segregación racial, y muchas de estas tropas no recibían reconocimiento oficial.
Aun así, Holloway continuó trabajando con las niñas durante los años siguientes.En la década de 1930 incluso llegó a organizar tropas no oficiales, guiándose únicamente por una copia del manual de las Girl Scouts para enseñar el programa a las niñas que querían participar.
Finalmente, tras años de insistencia y trabajo, en 1942 las tropas afroamericanas comenzaron a ser reconocidas oficialmente en Nashville.
Poco después, Holloway fue contratada por el consejo local como asesora de campo, convirtiéndose en una de las primeras profesionales afroamericanas dentro del movimiento scout en la región.Su trabajo abrió el camino para que muchas más niñas pudieran participar en el programa.
En reconocimiento a su labor, en 1955 se inauguró el Camp Holloway en Millersville, Tennessee, un campamento que llevaba su nombre y que ofrecía un espacio para que las niñas afroamericanas pudieran disfrutar de actividades al aire libre, algo que durante años les había sido negado en muchos lugares por la segregación.
Hoy, Josephine Groves Holloway es recordada como una de las grandes pioneras de las Girl Scouts y una mujer que, con paciencia y determinación, consiguió abrir una puerta que durante mucho tiempo había permanecido cerrada.
