  1. Quake (1996: Windows) – Review

Before reading my review, I would like to outline the criteria I use for video game reviews.  Today’s review will focus on one of id Software’s finest games, the original Quake! Along with the original Doom (1993: MS-DOS), Quake is another pioneer of not only the first-person shooter genre, but gaming as a whole. Amazing games like Doom (1993), Wolfenstein 3D (1992: MS-DOS), and Duke Nukem 3D (1996: MS-DOS) are impressive, but Quake blows them all out in the technical and graphical […]

  2. John Romero & id Software Founders Explain Catacomb 3D
Quick post today, just a pointer to a video John Romero posted on his Youtube channel a couple of months ago (17 minutes), where he gathered (well, edited together Zoom video of) the other founders of id Software (back before it was just another cubicle w

  3. Doom 3 (2004: Windows) – Review

Well, well, well. It appears I have finally returned to reviewing a game in my favorite video game franchise. Today's review will focus on Doom 3, which many considered the black sheep of the Doom franchise. Of course, everyone knows during its heyday (and admittedly over the last decade) that Doom was considered the trendsetter for FPS games. Activision published Doom 3 in 2004, the same year as the original Far Cry (2004: Windows) and Half-Life 2 (2004: Windows), and a year after the […]

  4. Gamefinds: Return to Castle Monkey Ball
Some time back, I don't remember how long, I made a Metafilter post about Nickireda's weird and fun mixup game Return to Castle Monkey Ball, free on itch.io.

In a place like Metafilter, it's not always obvious what will work and what

  5. You saw that new Quake prototype that got dumped last week, right? Bo Bayles already dove into it looking for cheat codes, and he writes about some interesting findings in today's Under the Microscope:

  6. Playing Wolfenstein 3D with one hand in 2026

Over three decades later, this historical curiosity has more than a few rough edges…

  7. A group of SegaXtreme community members banded together to buy and dump a pair of Saturn prototypes: Quake and Fantastep. I've got comparison screenshots between them and the final games in my story:

  8. @HeavenlyPossum “After nearly 10 years, #JohnCarmack’s time helping to guide VR hardware efforts at Meta (and at Facebook/Oculus before that) have come to a close. The #IdSoftware co-founder and Doom co-creator officially left Meta on Friday night, according to an internal company memo obtained by Insider and confirmed by The New York Times. Carmack’s departure message serves as a scathing indictment of crippling inefficiency at Meta that he said he was “offended by” and that he compared to a GPU with a measly 5 percent utilization rate. “We have a ridiculous amount of people and resources, but we constantly self-sabotage and squander effort. There is no way to sugar coat this,” he wrote. “I think our organization is operating at half the effectiveness that would make me happy.”

Not listening to heeding expert technical advice is “Marky Marks” special geek power. 🤣

  10. It's on this very day, February 1st 1991, that ID Software was created. Did you know #idSoftware is the inspiration behind #StarCitizen InterDimension Software? 🕹️

  13. I'll be needing some help for historical research from people who actually were there:

When Quake released in June 1996, did it run on DOS or did it already have a native version for Windows 95?
