“Founded in 1296, Veere's first link with Scotland was formed when the Cistercian Abbot of Melrose received from the Count of Flanders the right to export Scottish wool into Flanders duty free. Soon after, Ada, sister of King William the Lion of Scotland, married Floris III, Count of Zeeland.”

I am thinking of doing next semester a class (seminar style) on the history of the media from the printing press to the digital age. Any suggestions for topics to cover and suitable English-language readings?
Does anybody want to share their syllabus?
Many thanks in advance!

Never let it be said that you can't look glam *and* weld.
The lockers at the Oxfordshire History Centre have fab photographs fixed to them of documents and images in their collections. This one is of a woman working in the Morris Motors works in Cowley in 1943. There are more from the same time in their digitised collections

I have discovered early medieval Ireland, and holy shit, if there is ever a land to retreat into to avoid the modern world, this is it. The fragile political structure, the tensions of paganism vs. Christianity, the simple way of life of most people...I want to read every book ever written on this period. #historodons #medievodons #Ireland

You can tell that you're a medievalist at heart if, when called upon to teach modern U.S. history, your can't help referring to the 41st and 43rd Presidents as "Bush I" and "Bush II" as if they were medieval kings. #medievodons #historodons #teachers

A good recommendation for most people who follow me: my friend James Holloway is now at @gonzohistory. He hosts the podcast Monster Man, going through classic RPG monster books to talk about the history, mythology, imagery and game potential of the monsters in them. He's also an early medievalist, writer of excellent #TTRPG things like the adventure The Magonium Mine Murders and the Pamphlet of Pantheons create-your-deities guide, and an all round good human.

CW: Abd al-Latif on treasure hunting in Ayyubid Egypt
"Any treasure seeker with his own money ends up losing it in his quest. Those who are hard up to begin with, however, will target some well-off person and build up his hopes, till his desire for gain seems all but fulfilled. ... Eventually, the backer will end up insane, insolvent, and in dire straits." https://www.laphamsquarterly.org/roundtable/vast-and-innumerable-throngs-ancient-dead #historodons #egypt #nonsense #medieval

@konrad that's a good idea, I think; even quicker would be to introduce #historodons #histodons back into Twitter and get folk to add their own details that way?

#introduction Greetings all: there are two parts to my work.
Firstly, I write about contemporary religious history, mostly the UK, but not only: theology, philosophy of religion, the arts, politics and law, digital religion, and digital methods.
Secondly, my consultancy works with #GLAM institutions and universities, with particular interests in Web archives, digitisation, and OA publishing.
I'm based in the UK. -
I wrote a new blogpost looking at how the historical method doesn't always create "testable hypotheses" in the way that some more economics-minded folks would like, and why that still isn't a problem for using historical evidence to discuss the present day:

Thoughts and boosts all welcome :)

CW: shields in trecento Italy
#shieldMakingWithTheophilius focuses on ancient shields, but most of my teachers died after the year 1100. So I threw together a little page on the #shield in Italy 1360-1410 as a place to put information on later shields https://www.ageofdatini.info/res/shields-targets-pavises.html #medieval #historodons

CW: state violence, Roman empire, osteology
Oh wow: almost 10% of archaeolgoical visible burials in Roman Cambridgeshire after 200 CE had been beheaded (27 of 288 people). CW: willfull ignorance, imperialism
In 2001 aged only 67, Sir John Keegan declared in writing that "This war belongs within the much larger spectrum of a far older conflict between settled, creative productive Westerners and predatory, destructive Orientals."
What did he think the British Empire or the British East India Company were, economically speaking- a knitting circle to help paupers and orpans? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/4266179/In-this-war-of-civilisations-the-West-will-prevail.html #historodons

I feel so sad when I see beautiful paintings of historical scenes which incorporate reenactorisms! The failure of our physical skills and moral courage is infecting their imaginations. #art #historodons

So, it's #DayofDH2020, so I should probably do some of this public engagement stuff everyone keeps talking about, so I'm going to try and explain what I've been working on lately.
The explanation will have entirely irrelevant animal pictures throughout as a thanks for reading.
