Did Anime, Comics, and Manga Get Tamer After 9/11?

I've been thinking about something strange when it comes to anime, comics, and manga. Did they get... tamer after 9/11? Before anyone misunderstands what I'm saying, let me clarify. I'm not saying anime, comics, and manga suddenly became family-friendly after September 11, 2001. Obviously fucking not. There has been plenty of violent, sexual, disturbing, bizarre, controversial, and downright fucked-up material produced since then. There are anime series that have gone completely off the […]

  5. Did Media Get Tamer After 9/11?

I've had a strange thought about media for a while now. It seems like media has gotten... tamer. Not necessarily less explicit. Not necessarily less violent. Not necessarily less controversial. And certainly not completely devoid of weird, disturbing, offensive, provocative, or downright fucked-up shit. Because let's be clear: there has been plenty of that since 9/11. Movies have pushed boundaries. Television has pushed boundaries. Music has pushed boundaries. Video games have […]

I'm frequently finding myself looking for an old meme or news article and they've just vanished into the memory hole forever. Stuff from just six months earlier sometimes

  22. On #InternationalWomensDay, I wrote a piece commemorating Avis Waterman, the forgotten war correspondent of The Times. Appointed Milan Correspondent in May 1915, during 1915-17 she was attached to the Italian army & reported about the fighting between Italy & Austria-Hungary in the Trentino and on the Isonzo.

After #WWI she fell into oblivion & died impoverished & lonely in Paris in 1939.
