  4. Henry Gray of #GraysAnatomy in a dissection room, c.1845. Gray contracted smallpox after caring for his nephew, who eventually recovered. On 13 June 1861, the day he was to appear for an interview as a final candidate for a prestigious hospital post, he died at the age of 34.

  5. N.B. This is NOT an image of Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler (1831-1895), the first Black woman to earn an MD in the U.S. It is Mary Eliza Mahoney (1845-1926), the first professionally trained African American nurse in the U.S. No images of Crumpler taken during her lifetime are known to exist. Be careful because several websites and publications mistake Mahoney for Crumpler. #medhistory #historodons #blackhistory

Find of the day: a Percocet-branded tape measure, compliments of DuPont. #MedHistory #historodons #BigPharma

  7. Tinted, double-hinged spectacles, c.1790. Many opticians believed green or blue glass was easier on the eyes and would reduce glare; while clear glass was too soft and would distort images.

This extraordinary example is from the Wellcome Collection in London.

  8. Someone in the neighborhood must have had a serious collection of classic books about early women doctors, because I see books like this one turn up regularly in the #littlelibraries. Judging from photos, the real Dr Emily Dunning Barringer didn’t have such a magnificent pompadour. Sad that they left Dr Barringer’s hard-earned title out of the book title. Fuck the patriarchy. #medhistory #womensbiographies

  9. Glass plate for x-ray imaging (pre-1914). From the collection of the Mobile Medical Museum. #historodon #Museums #medhistory

  10. “Death blowing bubbles,” 18th century. The bubbles symbolize life's fragility. This plaster work appears on the ceiling of Holy Grave Chapel in Michaelsberg Abbey, Bamberg, Germany. After the monastery’s dissolution in 1803, the buildings were used as the city's hospital.

  11. CW: cw: antique medical tools

This was wasted on the bird app when I first got back from my trip so excited to be able to post here: recently visited the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum, which contains one of the wildest collections of #antique #medical tools I've ever seen. I'm a really wierd person so this is a hefty sample size. We joke about things like mercury or arsenic as "medicine", but the words "opium infused tampons" (c. 1826) never crossed my mind until this trip. #medhistory #medicine

  12. Here's looking at you, #Histodons!

Three glass eyes with portable velvet carrying case & mirror, c.1870. These were likely meant to be carried by an ocularist – someone who specialized in making and fitting prosthetic eyes – to assist them in making the best possible match. #histmed #histodon #medhistory #TIL #histsci

  13. Me on #Mastodon.

Dental Phantom, c.1898. The dental phantom was first created by the Glaswegian dentist Eduard Oswald Fergus a few years earlier as a tool for students to practice their craft before working on human subjects. #histmed #followfriday #medhistory #TIL
