@Linux_Is_Best I disagree. There were #opensource operating systems like #bsd before #linux under a permissive license. Companies like #apple took their work and made #macos without giving back.

#linux is gaining mainstream attention because the linux kernel uses the #gpl2 license. Any derivative works of the Linux kernel should be open source. The #gnu toolchain like compiler, bash, command line tools etc are parts of your Linux distribution.

So GNU made the world take open source seriously.

@liztai In the end, I went back to #FreePlane since it is #GPL2 and stores it's data in, more-or-less, human readable format that is also #LocalFirst

It may not be as modern as Dendron, but it still gets the job done. ❤️

@galdor Let’s not conflate the #SSPL license that Elastic switched to with the #BSLLicense.

The SSPL is an #AGPL license modified to prohibit competition for eternity.

The BSL is a license that turns into a #GPL2 compatible license within at most 4 years and which the creators, @mariadb, created to ensure their proprietary extensions would be as close to OSS as possible and guaranteed to eventually become full OSS.

Another day, another project that uses the #BSLLicense, but which hasn’t understood the requirements it’s setting (change date being too far away in the future and change license being #AGPL, which is not #GPL2 compatible)

The whole #OpenGameLicense debacle reminds me a lot of when version 3 of the #GNU #GPL came out, except that this time it's being done by a for-profit company that may make use of the new terms to go after other for-profit companies, so it's much more difficult to support the decision on intent (regardless of wording).

@znerol clarification. it is they who are arguing that the #GPL2 is triggered. indeed this is client side #javascript code, in fact it is commonly not pulled in as a dependency but loaded in as a separate JS file. anyway, their argument imho has no legal basis. but honestly if this is their interpretation, I will stay clear. I wanted to use their GPL2 license for non paying users but pay to use their proprietary plugins for users subscribed to my #SaaS service.

currently talking to a company that dual-licenses #Javascript code under the #GPL2 and proprietary licenses, that seems to argue that using the GPL2 license for their code would mean that the entire backend code would need to be licensed under a GPL2 compatible license. interestingly they are not arguing that one can only use the GPL2 license for their code while using a browser with a GPL2 compatible license.
