Blast from the past! Remember when Hasbro's handling of D&D had everyone looking for alternatives? 3 months ago, Ben Riggs interviewed Ryan Dancey and they talked about the OGL. At one point, Ryan states he thinks it is incredibly hard if not impossible to use the OGL with video games because it is very hard to delineate what is and what is not open content in a binary.
I agree, and I would argue that it can be somewhat easy to delineate what is and what is not open content in a book BUT more often then not, publishers do not do a very good job of delineating what is and what is not open content.

#WotC gave the "Deck of Many Things" to the community in the #SRD 5.1, issued under a #creativecommons #license. Now they are trying to claw the term back and #trademark it. Here's why they can't do that.

Teile des DUNGEONS & DRAGONS-Regelwerks jetzt unter Creative Commons-Lizenz
Um 2023 herum gab es einen großen Aufschrei in der Rollenspielszene, als die DUNGEONS & DRAGONS-Rechteinhaber Wizards Of The Coast unilateral die Open Game License ändern wollten …

🆕 OpenRPG.de stellt vor: The Black Hack

hat tip to @toddlyons for the link. I wanted to add a comment to this excellent run down of the OGL and the industry. However, it gets one point wrong.
"But, there’s a reason that Creative Commons hasn’t caught on further: you have to either be committed to releasing your entire content into the Creative Comments ... or you have to carefully construct an SRD for each publication so that you only release certain content"
This is false. And this falsehood seems to have spread far and wide like an ear worm. To clarify, you can specify what is and is not under the license. It is your work, you can delineate it however you want.

Phil Edwards take a look at the business of D&D and the OGL:
-
I spent a lot of time in the 10s going through what I like to call "The OGL Library of Lost Librams". There were quite a few published rules that have just disappeared in a certain sense of the word. Concentrating on just some MMO rpgs that came out in the 00s. All of these used the OGL. But when I got around to seeing if I could make a SRD implementation of them, it reinforced my stance that the OGL is a terrible license. Almost useless.
Each of these books has statements about what is Product Identity. (See image 4). You can not reasonably be expected to read the Product Identity clause of these license statements and make the "correct" judgement about what you can and can not use. I even consulted with a lawyer (old friend of mine) about the various product identity statements and he said some of it would be open to interpretation. Therefore, the OGL is terrible. It does not solve the problem of what you can and can not use. You are walking into legally shaky ground if you just use your judgement to start using things in these books.

Saw this tongue-in-cheek? post about happy OGL 1.1 day in my mastodon feed today. https://gizmodo.com/dnd-wizards-of-the-coast-ogl-1-1-open-gaming-license-1849950634
Something I think is not discussed enough is even though WotC backed off on OGL 1.1, the older OGL 1 is still a deeply flawed license. The issue of "can it be updated by a newer version" was never settled.

This week we look at OGL monsters left behind by the remaster that could still find a place in your Starfinder 2E game, starting with the Grell.

Just got a hardcover copy of the 4th edition of the Basic Fantasy RPG
You remember that whole rigmarole about WOTC and the OGL? The people at Basic Fantasy sure as hell do.
They've taken out everything that could possibly linked to the OGL, and placed the book under a CC BY-CA
As always, you can pick up all the Basic Fantasy PDFs for free at https://www.basicfantasy.org/
The physical books are ludicrously cheap on Amazon & Lulu.
The game itself is a solid little BX retro-clone with a few updates (Ascending AC, most notably). All of the core books and supplements are available as ODT files so you can make your own modified versions.

Here is a blog post by @watty62 on the adoption of OGL and RPSI in Scotland. It is written in light of Glasgow CC's decision yesterday to fulfil its legal obligations and do the right thing.

I just answered the Corporates & Assholes questionaire.
My demands are:
a) A public apology of the corporates to the fans, the creators and the in house creatives for the distress they caused to them.
b) The resignation of both Chris Cocks and Cynthia Williams.
c) The creation of an ogl 1.0b, with the sole addition to be that it's irrevocable.
Anything else sees me walking away from them.

I have just created a blog post detailing the plans for an open source ttrpg. Please check it out if you're interested at all as the only way for this to succeed is to have a community.

CW: TTRPG OGL GSL thoughts, looking back and forward
I had no idea until last week what the #GSL even was. Life events had me stop playing some time after 3.0 came out and I didn't start again until 5e.
Lots of people took a break at the same time for other reasons, but still came back for 5e.
I see a chance that time will heal wounds. Perhaps the methods behind 7e's release (whenever that is...) will do that. I don't see it happening sooner than that.

CW: OGL DnD humour
Welcome to #ShitPostSunday where I leave off my little tin drum and ask for you to share your finest memes and images about the #OGL disaster and mock the shambles that HasBeens of the Coast has made of themselves and #DnD.
No effort is too low, alt-text is preferred, but I'll add it on if you need it. Let's go!
