To disable the #notification sounds in #mastodon:
- Click the bell 🔔 on the right hand sidebar
- Then the 3 knobs 🎚 icon and uncheck sound

If you miss the #twitter look try the custom user interface called #elk #elkapp:
- https://elk.zone
- Some servers have it locally but it can connect to others as well

Words:
- Post/Toot = Tweet
- Boost = Retweet
- Favorite = Like

Boosting a post shows it on your feed. Favoriting a post will show it to the author:
- Others can only see your favs by clicking that post
- You can't lookup others favs so use them freely
- You can search posts you've fav:ed from the #️⃣ explore button on the right sidebar

Some instances allow longer messages. This depends on each servers settings.

To make posts #searchable by others:
- Use #hashtags
- Only a few servers like https://infosec.exchange and https://mastodon.social support #FullTextSearch
- This feature is coming for all servers soon in V4.2.0

Would be neat if it resized the search bar to fill up more of the screen when you start typing to give more space for results.

When using search on Universeodon it also returns post content which gets a bit crowded in the small box, especially on mobile. I'll attach a screenshot.

It's great to see, so much easier to read conversations! I've been using the Elk theme myself which has it and some more features like showing number of boosts and favs.

A thing I've noticed on Firefox mobile on Android are the areas for clicking the buttons on the bottom bar being offset a bit upwards from their actual location. It makes accidental favorites and boosts happen sometimes.

The exact position seems to depend on how much I’ve scrolled but not sure.
Might require some custom CSS fiddling or adding invisible layers on top.

@tupper More and more companies are turning on their users, assuming they're fair game to milk for money. Unfortunately it's going to backfire and hurt their profits just like it did with Twitter. It shows that federated approaches may be the only way to avoid having your social networks get used by greedy interests.

Mastodon's biggest setbacks are the limitations in searching and lack of features that are intentionally excluded from an exaggerated fear of harassment. There are discussions in the works to hopefully change this. Having consent dependant searchability that users can opt-into, or on by default for the the instance.

@pimoore @elk Ich finde es bedenklich, dass die App auf #elk.zone läuft, man sich aber mit den Credentials eines anderen Servers einlogged. Wie laufen die #Daten? Wie ist sichergestellt, dass elk.zone nicht alles Mögliche mitschneidet?
