Today I'm running Madness on Geneva Lake, a #CoC adventure to celebrate the 50th anniversary of #Chaosium (founded 31 October 1975).
There are some editorial problems with the book. In particular, the stats for Dr. King are missing.
In the past, I would have searched #forums for errata or to see if other players had filled in the blanks. But today all such discussions take place in #walledgardens like #Discord which are not #indexed or #searchable.
I guess I'll just wing it.

Mastodon by default unfortunately only supports searching via hashtags. You can't search via content in posts unless they type a specific hashtag.There are exceptions though...
The https://universeodon.com instance has implemented a custom feature for searching text in posts. I'm hoping this gets adopted by more instances! It makes finding like minded and interesting discussions that much better.
Trying there might help you find skeptics and ufo related discussions that way 😉

@richvn Given the content filters & warnings that are a core part of the #fediverse experience, why not have an opt-in free text #search? ie we build a system where profiles, posts/toots can be opted in to be #indexed and fully #searchable. Would need wider community support (eg from @Gargron & others) but this would be v useful while avoiding controversy #fedsearch.io

I have #searchable in my profile and I love how my posts for #AllAngelsJazzBand are amplified in Google by other servers Global pages (way better than IG) but if rather my content stays mine, not belligerently resold as robo-gary

I'm old enough to remember when this was on advogato and it was called "microblogging" thank you very much.
I have tagged my profile #searchable because my approach to social media is microblogging, and I generally try to put thought into what I post.
The fact that you think I'm stupid for doing this is unlikely to change my opinion.
Now, for at least some of my threads, I do collect them in edited form. Then I often share links to that edited form here. It's rarely on my nominal blog these days; far more likely to be a forum, but I'm not here to argue semantics.
Your arrogant demands are unlikely to change my behavior.

My latest favorite online tool is #PDF file regeneration with #OCR.
Utilizing these tools I can screenshot some presentation, put those images into one PDF, run it through the service and download a #searchable PDF.
I have no idea what is the business model (my content is no secret) but https://tools.pdf24.org/en/ocr-pdf fulfills my niche need.

Need to search your own toots? Being on an instance like vmst.io or avgeek.social w/ #ElasticSearch is handy. Search <whatever> from:me.
Alternatively, pull and index an RSS feed of your own timeline. All public #mastodon accounts have a built-in RSS. Just add .rss to the end of the URL. So in my case: vmst.io/@user47.rss #Feditips #fediverse #tmyk #searchable #rss

#Discord is worse than #Mailingists, #IRC and #Forums combined because those - like #GitHub #Issues or any other public site & server - can at least be #crawled and #archived in a #searchable fashion.
Whereas Discord is peak #Enshittification and not only #AntiAccessibility but also the worst kind of communication solution, as there isn't even any option to export stuff from within it - something even #Slack & #MicrosoftTeams can do [#Zulip has been able to do that from the start]...
Discord is a bad and wrong excuse not to provide #public documentation and/or downloads.
#GithubPages is free & #DDoS-protected #Webhosting and for fast downloads on the cheap, #BitTorrent exists for almost two decades now...
I mean, do people who use Discord know how many times people like me needed to use @internetarchive / #InternetArchive's #WaybackMachine to access contents?
How many hours of labour have been collectively saved by #DuckDuckGo #InstantAnswer linking to the correct #StackOverflow / #ServerFault thread??Discord is an #InformationBlackHole and should be regarded with the same public accessibility as a intelligence agency's database: Don't use it and don't contribute to it - period!

My posts are now #searchable. All [checks profile] ...hmmm... 313 of them. OK, maybe that contribution is not such a watershed moment for the global info space. Still, this is great progress for Mastodon.

@graue don’t want to be pedantic about how to write #userstories, but i am confused by what this feature does. Is it:
- Given I have a discoverable account
- Given i wrote a toot with the word “hello” in it (not a hashtag)
- When a user searches the word hello only, with or without “”
- when a user searches the word hello at least
- then results display my tootAnd what about the difference
- my account is searchable (handle, bio)
Vs.
- my toots are #searchable -

It won't catch everything but it makes finding interesting and like-minded magnitudes easier than painfully spamming hashtags.

- Only a few servers like https://infosec.exchange and https://mastodon.social support #FullTextSearch
