Found a workaround for this in Tusky.

Account preferences - Tabs - [+] Hashtags

Works for posts but seems to filter out answers. I'm 90% happy with this.

Meanwhile I got a new idea: Lists that contain hashtags and people. That would be the perfect solution.

Although #Tusky is a much more robust and feature rich client compared to the official #Mastodon android app, I do appreciate how the official app shows notifications immediately instead of having a huge delay.
Apparently they use different underlying notification technologies.

Pros and cons to each app.
I haven't tried out other #mastodonclients
