Fairey Swordfish Mk III, Imperial War Museum, Duxford. This aircraft was built not by Fairey's but by Blackburn Aircraft Ltd. These were known, colloquially, as 'Blackfish' It is in the markings of No 119 Sqn, RAF which used these obsolescent biplanes on nocturnal sorties over the Scheldt estuary in 1945 to hunt down E-boats and minature submaries of the Kreigsmarine. Hence the all-black colour scheme and the radar carried under the fuselage. #RAF #Swordfish #FaireySwordfish #BlackburnAircraft #Scheldt #Kreigsmarine #1945 #eboat #submarine #biplane #WW2 #avgeek #imperialwarmuseum #Duxford #aviation #royalairforce #Radar

De Havilland Mosquito TT.35. The last 'flourish' of the DH Mosquito was a post-war target tug, converted from the last bomber version built, the Mosquito B.35. This example hangs in the roof of one of the hangars at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, United Kingdom, wearing the classic 'anti-camouflage' of the target tug, silver upper surfaces, with bold yellow and black stripes. The swift Mosquito was an ideal aircraft for towing aerial targets! There is no longer a flying example of the type in Europe, however, The People's Mosquito (a Registered Charity) is now building one! Growing up, although we never talked about it much, I knew my Granda had been a navigator in WW2, flying on Liberators. There was a photo he always had on display, of his crew next to the plane.
A couple of weeks ago we visited the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, and I got to see one of the few remaining Liberators for the first time.
It was amazing to see it, but also very sobering in all sorts of ways.

C-47A This example of the classic transport aircraft designed by Douglas was one of the workhorses of WW2. Seen here at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, this fine example of the breed is shown wearing the famous 'D-Day' stripes, and with a heavily weathered paint scheme, appropriate to the period film in which she had taken part. #IWM #Duxford #USAAF #WW2 #invasionstripes #DDay #aircraft #aviation #photography #aviationphotography #avgeek #ImperialWarMuseum #Douglas #C47 #history
