The Ministry of Defence (MoD) wrote in a formerly secret 1993 file that RAF Akrotiri plays a ‘key role in support of the Priority 1, Category A #intelligence and #communications effort’ on Cyprus.
It added that ‘this secure airhead enables MOD and OGD [other government departments] to move sensitive equipment to and from Cyprus secretly and without scrutiny’.”

La prueba más extraña de que Nicholas Alkemade había sobrevivido a una caída de 5.500 metros no la escribió él.
La escribieron sus enemigos.
Las propias autoridades alemanas terminaron dejando constancia de que aquel artillero británico había salido de un bombardero en llamas sin paracaídas, había caído desde unos 18.000 pies y, contra cualquier pronóstico, había llegado vivo al suelo.
Alkemade tenía 21 años y era el artillero de cola del Lancaster DS664, bautizado *Werewolf*.
La noche del 24 al 25 de marzo de 1944 participaba en una misión de bombardeo sobre Berlín.El avión había despegado de RAF Witchford a las 18:48.
En el regreso, poco antes de medianoche, un caza alemán Ju 88 pilotado por Heinz Rökker apareció por debajo y abrió fuego.El *Werewolf* empezó a arder.
El piloto, James Arthur Newman, dio la orden de abandonar el avión.
Para Alkemade, sin embargo, la orden llegó acompañada de un pequeño detalle que podía matarlo.
Su paracaídas no estaba dentro de la torreta trasera.
El artillero tenía puesto el arnés, pero el paquete del paracaídas estaba guardado en el interior del fuselaje y debía conectarlo antes de saltar.
Abrió la torreta para buscarlo.
Y se encontró con un infierno.
Las llamas habían alcanzado el interior.
El calor le quemó la cara y las muñecas, comenzó a derretirle la máscara de oxígeno y el fuego terminó alcanzando su ropa.Alkemade tenía dos opciones.
Quedarse dentro de un bombardero que estaba ardiendo.
O saltar.
Sin paracaídas.
Giró la torreta hacia un lado y se lanzó de espaldas a la noche.
Ni siquiera tuvo tiempo de quitarse el casco ni desconectar el intercomunicador.
Cayó.
Y siguió cayendo.
Alcanzó una velocidad cercana a los 190 kilómetros por hora y en algún momento perdió el conocimiento.
Mientras él descendía hacia la oscuridad, el *Werewolf* terminó explotando en el aire.
Alkemade despertó unas tres horas después.
Estaba vivo.
Había caído sobre un pequeño bosque de pinos.
Las copas de los árboles habían frenado progresivamente su descenso y, después, terminó sobre una capa de nieve de unos 46 centímetros.Sus botas habían desaparecido.
Tenía quemaduras, cortes, golpes y una rodilla lesionada.
Pero no tenía ni un solo hueso roto.
Y aquí está la parte que hace que esta historia sea todavía más increíble.
A unos veinte metros de donde había caído empezaba un terreno abierto.
Sin árboles.
Sin nieve suficiente.
Si hubiera caído allí, probablemente no estaríamos contando su historia.
Las ramas jóvenes y flexibles habían hecho de gigantesco colchón.
No lo habían detenido de golpe: habían ido absorbiendo parte de la energía de la caída hasta que la nieve pudo hacer el resto.Alkemade no podía caminar.
Pero estaba consciente.
Encendió un cigarrillo y empezó a utilizar su silbato de emergencia hasta que varias personas de la zona lo encontraron.
Lo llevaron a un hospital de Meschede.
Y allí los alemanes tuvieron un problema.
No se creían su historia.
Querían saber dónde estaba su paracaídas.
Porque, sencillamente, aquello no tenía sentido.
Alkemade insistió en que nunca lo había abierto.
Así que les dijo que buscaran su arnés en el bosque.
Lo encontraron.
Estaba exactamente como él había explicado.
Y todavía había más.
Los restos del *Werewolf* habían caído unos treinta kilómetros más lejos.
Cuando fueron examinados, allí seguían la manija metálica y el cable utilizados para accionar el paracaídas de Alkemade.Nunca habían sido utilizados.
La historia estaba empezando a dejar de parecer una mentira.
El 25 de abril de 1944 quedó registrada por escrito la investigación alemana que corroboraba que el aviador había caído desde unos 18.000 pies sin utilizar paracaídas.
Alkemade pasó el resto de la guerra como prisionero y terminó en Stalag Luft III, donde su historia corrió entre los aviadores capturados.
Los demás tripulantes del *Werewolf* no tuvieron tanta suerte.
James Arthur Newman, Edgar Warren, Charles Hilder y John McDonough murieron aquella noche.
John Cleary y Geoffrey Burwell sobrevivieron y fueron capturados.
Alkemade regresó a Gran Bretaña después de la guerra y murió en 1987.
Durante décadas, su historia se ha contado de una manera casi mágica: «el hombre que cayó 5.500 metros sin paracaídas y sobrevivió».
Pero la física tiene una explicación mucho menos misteriosa y, precisamente por eso, más fascinante.
Alkemade no estuvo acelerando durante los 5.500 metros.
Alcanzó rápidamente una velocidad límite y la mantuvo durante buena parte del descenso.Lo que decidió si vivía o moría ocurrió al final.
En los últimos metros.
Las ramas.
La nieve.
Y unos cuantos segundos adicionales de frenado.
Después de pasar kilómetros cayendo del cielo, su vida terminó dependiendo de algo tan sencillo como aterrizar en el lugar correcto.
Por veinte metros.
