  1. Any kind of work which doesn't produce immediate products such as political science, philosophy, history, and even mathematics science and medicine (including psychiatry) will be overwhelmingly paid for by the people with the most money and those will be the hegemonic institutions - therefore these oft self described scientific and unbiased fields will actually have a heavy bias towards protecting the hegemonic source of their funding. Money ruins everything it touches.

One such example of this is institutional carnism expressed through science and medicine as talked about by melanie joy

But my broader takeaway from this thought (which is probably not original and something that gramsci talked about) is that no space within the system is free from hegemonic cultural capture - integration with and especially power within the system implies some kind of moral compromise that's a reason why anarchists propose dual power structures instead.

P.S. Philosophy of maths can have political connotations in the metaphysical assumptions it does or doesn't make

  2. For the comfortable white middle class liberals of the US that cannot imagine a life beyond #capitalism and the current electoral system.

"They discuss how capitalism maintains itself through market dependence, exploitation, and austerity, and why escaping it requires building alternative institutions rather than relying on elections or reforms within the capitalist state...

There is a reason elections cannot deliver emancipation. The capitalist state is structurally designed to insulate elites from popular control. Clara describes her practical organizing work with FREE (Forum for Real Economic Emancipation) in Tulsa, building horizontal assemblies, participatory budgeting campaigns, community land trusts, and mutual aid.

Steve touches on the concept of de-commodifying basic needs (housing, healthcare, food), to break market dependence. But then, capitalism would be unworkable."

  5. If we think of the most powerful people as misanthropic Malthusian accelerationists that are aware of how bad the climate catastrophe is getting, many of their behaviours make sense. I'm not saying this is the whole absolute reality, but the data fits and the causal mechanisms are logically sound. If someone else can provide a more correct model, particularly if it changes the following conclusions, I am interested.
If we accept this model, it follows directly that they view the majority (>90%) of humanity as something between a disposable resource to exploit to death and a direct enemy to be destroyed as soon as possible.
Given that conclusion, I ask if it does not follow that all means of self defense and rebellion against them are not justified? Any attempts to dissuade them is against a short timeline of real threat and the urgency this model assumes they are already operating under.
Any other possible models or conclusions are invited. Pearl clutching and explicit (legally actionable) calls to action will be ignored. And any proposed elaborations or improvemrnts are welcome.

  7. @ErikUden While in principle I like your partys organizational principles the best, its still electoralism and material forces will cause capitalists to infiltrate and corrupt your party, remember 100 years ago labour was a party of the labour movement

You're right that changes are fought for on the ground but we cant let the bells and whistles of party organising hamper the movement, mutual aid is not charity, as soon as our movement becomes solely dependant on investment from yourparty we will become party organs. I'm not saying dont take the money because initial set up can take a lot of cash but dont become dependant on it, build dual power directly coops and mutual aid structures of all kinds

  8. Community building is one of the most important, but often overlooked, forms of activism. Organize that book club, get together people you know to swap old clothes and items, invite your neighbors over for coffee and cake. It's harder to turns people against their neighbors when they actually know them and see them as humans. And you never know what might come out of it.

  11. Next weekend Firestorm will be hosting author David Vaina for an in-person conversation with local Appalachian organizers about his new book "On-Ramps to a New Civil Society: Mutual Aid at the Edges of the Anthropocene," an autonomist reimagining of labor, value, mutual aid, and revolution. They'll discuss the present moment of institutional decline, where a political void has emerged in addressing our collective needs, and how mutual aid can contribute to the development of a radically new society.
