  1. It's funny how letting go of the past is really hard sometimes, even with simple, silly things. After 16 years, I'm finally letting go of a domain I centered my identity around.

    After today, I'll be down to 3 personal domains and 1 shared, from a peak of 16.

    Feels good, if not a little sad.

  3. Because of the domain name price being quite expensive (more than RM100++ per year), I think I'll use subdomains. `*.nulu.my` (`nulu` in Kadazandusun means hill, although regional dialects vary). I do not feel comfortable or like myself if I use domains other than `.my`, which means Malaysia.

  5. Why Use a Country-Level Domain Extension?

    Using overseas hosting (outside the United States) is a smart move and something we encourage — it can provide greater privacy, legal protection, and sovereignty over your data.

    However, hosting alone is not enough.

    Even if you host your website (for example, on a .com) in a country like Germany, while your files and database may be safe, your domain name itself can still be subject to U.S. law. Many domain extensions — including .com, .net, .org, .info, .us, and .edu — are governed by U.S. jurisdiction.

    Additionally, many word-based domain extensions — such as .social — are managed by private corporations based in the United States, which can still put your domain name at risk of legal or commercial interference. Corporations can also be easily bought or influenced, unlike sovereign nations. Historically, sovereign nations tend to seek to hold onto their sovereignty — even when they are financially broke or fundamentally broken.

    Domain takedowns are rare, but the possibility exists — especially in today's unstable political climate. For example, even close allies like Canada have experienced tension with the U.S., and Donald Trump even tried to instruct Microsoft to discontinue services to Denmark, raising the question: What is "normal" anymore?

  7. Dear fellow Canadian Mastodon-ers...

    My preferred Dot CA domain name is currently being cyber-squatted.

    Because the content is Canada specific, as will be a number of its would-be sub-domains,

    I want the Dot CA.

    Yet since I can't have it as I don't want to reward the cyber-squatter

    Please help me by suggesting alternate Top Level Domains that to most Canadians would still be kind of a Canadian TLD.

    Thank you! Eh!

  8. #linuxguru #help #questions

    Looking for anyone who knows #networking. Specifically, #domains and nslookups. I wrote a domain analysis #script, but I did it quickly for myself and some collages. Does anyone have any suggestions for the best #language to use to do extensive domain record lookups? I was thinking #Python, but some where I work use #Ruby. I know I do not wish to stay using #PHP. That was thrown together quick and works, but it is not ideal.

    So basically, what language is considered to have the most libraries/tools for #domainname #analysis? Mostly #dns64
    stuff.

    Basically, this is a simple tool that combines a bunch of what could just be bash commands to get a good overview of a domain name, it's records, and the status of those hosts/ips. Open to any suggestions!

    I can go into specifics if anyone bites on this topic.

  18. If you need to find the fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) of your server in Linux (e.g., you want to know whether to accept or deny an ACME challenge for Let’s Encrypt TLS certificates.):

    * hostname --fqdn # OR
    * cat /etc/hostname

    And to get the IP:

    * hostname --ip-address
