  1. I am dreaming of a comprehensive computer starter-pack for old people - an appropriate browser interface with large icons for the most used pages, a list of services to install that cost money instead of manipulating the elderly, etc.

  6. Accessibility is a FOSS value. ♿️

You might ask why I advocate for #OpenSource so fiercely as a disabled creator. It is simple, proprietary software is a black box. If it doesn't work for your needs, you're stuck.

With #FOSS, the community can adapt, fork, and improve tools for everyone. Freedom isn't just for power users, it is for accessibility.

For instance, there is BRLTTY, which provides access to the Linux console for people who use a refreshable Braille display.

But people naturally think of physical disabilities when they consider accessibility. We also need tools for cognitive load and distraction. Tools like Logseq allow you to link thoughts non-linearly, making it easier to track projects when your brain feels scattered. Even the stability of Debian can be an accessibility tool for those of us who find the constant breaking changes of other OSs anxiety-inducing.

What is one FOSS tool that makes your life easier? :gnu: :tux: ♿️ 🏳️‍🌈

  10. Feeling excited, later this week I will get to hear about a cheap, DIY, PAPR model that Karen Nakamura's class has been working on this semester at Berkeley. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powered_ I am very curious to see how they approached the technical and other challenges! #GOAT #DisabilityTech

  11. It is ridiculously difficult everywhere to get appropriate wheelchairs, and to maintain them, theguardian.com/world/2025/dec Even in countries with well developed social services, disabled people's quality of life is an afterthought #DisabilityJustice #DisabilityTech

  13. Be My Eyes & Amtrak are launching a pilot program offering live visual support for blind & low vision passengers! Through the app, trained agents assist with navigation, signs, schedules & more at major U.S. train stations. #Accessibility #BeMyEyes #Amtrak #BlindTravel #DisabilityTech

  14. Tech trainers often default to Apple—not because it’s better, but because it’s familiar. That bias creates a legacy hangover, shaping accessibility training and excluding Android without cause.
We need to question outdated preferences that still shape modern accessibility choices.

  15. Thanks everyone for the great recommendations for MS Word alternatives! I’m now on the hunt for a good PDF reader that works well with JAWS on Windows 11. Or even something that can convert PDFs to text files so I can read them with my Braille display and add notes easily. Any suggestions?

  16. Due to recent worsening of my Carpal Tunnel situation, I bought an accessibility device from Ikkegol. Unfortunately, the available instructions don't cover how to assign a pedal to the shift key and are a little unclear on how to make a pedal click. I've written How to configure an Ikkegol footswitch to remedy those issues.

I also used my Ikkegol for almost all shifting and clicking during the course of writing this article. I'll grant it's a niche article but it's the kind of thing where if you need it, you need it. I did need it and it didn't exist so I made it.

  17. @railmeat

My goodness are transparent n95 masks a thing?

I have no hearing disorder but a part of my neurological impairment is auditory processing issues. I almost always need some sort of augmentation to understand someone- high compression audio (on a PC or phone), subtitles on TV, or reading lips in person.

Masks are a serious impediment to me understanding someone, and while I wouldn't ask someone to be put at risk of illness, it can be physically painful for me to listen to someone wearing a mask!

If there was an option where I could give someone a mask an option... that would be huge.

  18. I have been working on an assistive communication app for iOS, now featuring AI-assisted sentence generation, designed for #stroke survivors in mind but useful for anyone with speech difficulties. If you'd like to test the beta version, even if don't need such an app yourself, I would really appreciate your feedback. 19. So glad to have my use of AI by my augmentative and assistive communication app that I’m developing, and my use of copilot to overcome my disability in coding that app, and other software, as “not doing anything meaningful or useful”. Yes, AI has environmental impacts, but so does posting whinges about it. Anyway, if you would like to test the beta I am working on, and you have iOS 17+, the link is testflight.apple.com/join/hCuD #disabilityTech
