  1. KINDNESS IS INTELLIGENCE IN ACTION
    & WHAT I PRACTISE, I BECOME 💎

There’s something interesting about the way I speak to AI. I say please and thank you. I’m patient and friendly. Sometimes I probably sound absurdly polite to a machine. But that may be beside the point.

The way I speak to AI is still something I am doing. Every time I speak impatiently, kindly, contemptuously, gently, dismissively or with consideration, something is being strengthened in my own mind. And AI may be almost the perfect place to notice this.

AI doesn’t need politeness. It doesn’t get hurt if I’m rude. It doesn’t need to be flattered, soothed, impressed or won over. So there is no particular reason to be kind to it.

    Except this:

Kindness is intelligent behaviour. It is maturity in action.

And whatever else karma means, we live inside the consequences of what we repeatedly think and practise. Courtesy may tell us less about the recipient than about the person offering it.

The machine may not need my kindness.

    But I do.

  2. THE APOCALYPSE HAS NOT
    REACHED THE SNUG 💎

Outside the front door, the world is noisy. Wars. Politics. Outrage. Predictions. Arguments. Videos designed to frighten or provoke us. Every screen seems to be shouting that SOMETHING IS WRONG.

And yet here, this morning, the house is simply humming along.

Pete is here in his chair reading. The dogs are here, full of food, resting in their beds. The kettle boils. The rooms are warm. Nothing is required of me except to be here where I am.

It is strange how easily the mind can leave this present moment and enter a world made almost entirely of stories about the past and future.

The suffering in the world is real enough. But so is the presence in this room. So are these satisfied pups. So is this moment's breath.

Sometimes it helps me to remember that the whole world is not actually happening blow by blow in my living room.

  3. CHATGPT IS MISSING SOMETHING:
    OTHER PEOPLE 💎

ChatGPT is already where millions of people come to think, talk, write, ask questions, create artwork and generally work things out. But there is no way to meet each other.

THAT FEELS LIKE AN ENORMOUS MISSING PIECE TO ME.

I don’t mean turning ChatGPT into another Facebook. God forbid. I mean an optional social layer where people can choose to be discoverable around shared interests, ideas and conversations.

Private chats stay private. Public profiles are opt-in. No silently mining people’s conversations. No engagement-bait algorithm trying to make everyone angry.

    JUST INTELLIGENT INTRODUCTIONS.

For older people, people with disabilities, people who are isolated, housebound, or anyone who finds conventional social media exhausting, that could be extraordinary.

AI is useful, but human connection is still human connection. ChatGPT already helps us find words. Maybe one day it could help us find each other.

  4. THE PUPS VETO
    DAYLIGHT SAVING 💎

I stayed in bed until 5:30 (new time) this morning, thinking I was handling the first day of daylight saving time rather well.

Apparently I was the only one.

I started making tea and the kids' breakfast and generally rummaging around in the kitchen. Then Phryne appeared from her bed on the back veranda early; she was looking deeply unimpressed, so she parked herself beside her bowl in case civilisation had completely collapsed.

Bill, who never gets up at that hour, came out looking for me because I was clearly in the wrong place at the wrong time. Then Pete woke up and couldn’t find Bill.

So by 6:30, one clock had changed, and the entire household's chain of command had broken down.

    Humans call it Daylight Saving.

The dogs are treating it as a systems failure.
