The U.S. FDA has cleared a self-balancing exoskeleton for wheelchair users with spinal cord injuries. This will allow them to walk hands-free on level surfaces. This should be commercially available in the U.S this September.

1967. GE built a powered exoskeleton. 🦾💪
Hardiman. Hydraulic. Amplified strength 25x. Could lift a car (or close to it).
The catch? It weighed 680kg (1,500 lbs). The full version would have topped 1,000kg. Too heavy. Too ahead of its time.
Never deployed. But it proved the core tech: hydraulics, force feedback.
The Iron Man prototype from the analog era.

> What if an exoskeleton didn’t rely on cold machinery… but synced directly with your nervous system?Released on September 5, 1998, Spriggan.
Maybe that was the template for the power armor called Mjǫllnir in the Halo Series that the main protagonist namely Master Chief 117 is wearing and works in the same way. 🤔😁

did you know there are already passive-elastic and powered exoskeletons that you can buy to help you lift heavier stuff?
we looked into it at work a while ago and gave the logistics folks in the warehouse a bunch of these, I figured the fediverse needed to hear about the existence of these because I hadn't really realized they already existed in industrial and well tested widely used forms

Ukraine becomes the first military in the world to deploy exoskeleton technologies on the battlefield.
Artillery crews need to lift heavy shells all day. They now get locally developed exoskeletons reducing muscle load by 30%.

Ps. Experimental US army exoskeletons cost hundreds of thousands. Ukraine’s system costs a couple of thousand.

Forget fancy peripherals, Kojima Productions just dropped a *Death Stranding 2* co-branded exoskeleton! This Dnsys Z1 isn't just for show, it's engineered to offload 200% of your body weight from your knees. Finally, you can carry that mountain of tech debt without back pain.
Is this the ultimate "game immersion," or just a really expensive way to avoid squats?

🦾 When we’re healthy, activities like walking, sitting down, speaking and remembering things can be done with ease. But if an accident or illness impairs our physical or cognitive capabilities, such everyday tasks can become difficult or even impossible. Researchers are working to develop systems that can help patients regain lost physical abilities.

Open-source exoskeleton aims to close disability divide https://www.scidev.net/global/news/open-source-exoskeleton-aims-to-close-disability-divide/
Currently, the cost of medical exoskeletons — ranging from around few thousand US dollars to over US00,000 for more sophisticated devices — remains prohibitive for people in need in low- and middle-income countries.
