✨Dionysus was interested in seafood?✨
This is part of the recently uncovered House of Thiasos at Pompeii which is covered in sprawling and near life sized portraits of followers of Dionysus including Silenus (seen here with a young lady). But it seems that the veneration of Dionysus would be incomplete indeed without some fine marine creatures!

✨Dionysus and Spes (Maybe)✨
Dionysus is dressed in his panther-skin best and wears a garland to boot. He’s joined by a smaller figure more archaic in style which is thought to represent Spes, the personification of hope. But maybe that’s more HOPEFUL thinking since one of stops on the journey of provenance was as part of the Hope collection. Either way, this beautiful sculpture also considered to be a Roman reimagining of a Greek bronze from the fourth century BCE.

Bacchus, the god of wine (also known as Dionysus to the Greeks) lounges semi-nude in a golden and burgundy gown while holding a spectre of some kind. This is likely a thyrsus, but the telltale details are missing.
Bacchus appears to be wearing a garland - a very typical thing in his iconography. Just off on stage right appears to be another figure holding a dish. The background of this scene is a brilliant warm red.
The fresco comes from a house that was built on the same site, but prior to, the Baths of Caracalla in Rome. It is thought to date to the early second century CE. The house was revealled during archaeological excavations in 2022 and can be seen today as part of the tour of the baths.

@novafuture Um, have you heard about the #Dionysus / #Bacchus cults? Or ritual #Saki drinking? Or beer and wine in #AncientEgypt (so important that some were buried with it)? And yes, alcohol was given to workers because the water was contaminated. The history of alcohol (and other mind-altering substances) goes back further than modern marketing hype. And yes. Everything in moderation.

@kris_of_pnictogen Yeah, but all the donkey stuff started with #Dionysus! Even the riding the donkey through the adoring (and maybe tripping) crowds!

Facts about some religions...
#Christianity is based on #Mithras and #Dionysus cults. And some branches of modern #Witchcraft are based on Christianity (#Gardnerian). Just leaving that out there...

O Holy Dionysus
Of the ivy and the vine
I ask for your presence
I ask for your blessings
Lord of ecstatic revelation
Lord of the altered mind
Show me the world as it truly is
Allow me to see the truth
For in your presence I will dance
Wild and abandoning reason
And for the world I ask a boon
Show them the hurt they cause
Let them feel it too
For in feeling lies compassion
Show them too the lies they tell
To others and to themselves
That they may learn to live truthfully
And allow others to do the same
Lord of the vine and the ivy
Stand with us today
Walk, perhaps crookedly, along this path with us
Lord of introspection
Grant us your gifts
Walk with us as we navigate life, O holy Dionysus
Art: Johann Wilhelm Schütze
