De Theogonie
We horen over hoe uit de oorspronkelijke chaos twee goden zijn voortgekomen, namelijk Ouranos en Gaia ofwel Vader Hemel en Moeder Aarde. Dit kosmische paar krijgt verschillende kinderen, waaronder de graangod Kronos, die jaloers is op de macht van zijn vader. Gaia heeft zo haar eigen redenen om een afkeer te hebben van Ouranos, en zij zet haar kinderen op tegen hun vader. Kronos neemt het voortouw bij de aanslag en overmeestert Ouranos, die hij met zijn graansikkel castreert.
De oude hemelgod voorspelt nu aan Kronos dat deze op zijn beurt zal worden afgezet. Vooralsnog echter is Kronos, inmiddels getrouwd met zijn zus Rhea, de heerser van de nog jonge schepping.
De nieuwe oppergod neemt voorzorgsmaatregelen om te beletten dat de voorspelling van zijn vader in vervulling zal gaan: hij verzwelgt de kinderen die hij heeft verwekt bij Rhea. Die wil wraak en als ze haar zesde kind baart, de donder- en blimsemgod Zeus, bedenkt ze een plan om haar baby te redden. In plaats van haar zoon geeft ze Kronos een in luiers gewikkelde steen, die de oude god inslikt in de veronderstelling dat het zijn zoontje is.
Als Zeus, die dus in leven blijft, eenmaal is opgegroeid, dwingt hij Kronos om zijn kinderen weer uit te braken. De steen wordt geplaatst in Delfi, waar hij zal worden vereerd als de omfalos, navel, van de wereld. Sinds deze gebeurtenissen, zo wisten de Grieken, regeert Zeus als oppergod over het universum.
Het lied van Kumarbi
We hebben voor dit duistere verhaal over macht, exces, wraak, opvolging en vergelding een parallel: een kleitablet uit de veertiende eeuw v.Chr., gevonden in de Hittitische hoofdstad Hattusa, met daarop de tekst van het Lied van Kumarbi.
Dat begint met een catalogus van goden en vervolgt met een korte typering van de heerschappij van de oergod Alalu, die zich terugtrekt onder de aarde als hij is afgezet door de hemelgod Anu. Alalu’s zoon Kumarbi, een graangod, dient zich echter aan om zijn afgezette vader te wreken. In een gevecht overmeestert hij Anu en bijt hem diens geslachtsdeel af. De verslagen en ontmande hemelgod trekt zich terug, maar niet zonder Kumarbi te hebben voorspeld dat ook hij eens zal worden afgezet.
Op dit punt is de tekst van het kleitablet beschadigd, maar het is duidelijk dat Kumarbi dreigt zijn kinderen op te eten, vermoedelijk om te verhinderen dat zij hem zullen afzetten. Iemand geeft hem echter een stuk steen te eten, dat hij uitbraakt en dat sindsdien wordt vereerd. Vervolgens staat uit Kumarbi’s lichaam de dondergod Tešub op. De graangod heeft immers met het geslachtsdeel ook het zaad van Anu binnengekregen. Tešub neemt de macht over, zodat zich weer een nieuwe godengeneratie aandient.

Niet alleen zijn er herhaalde motieven, zoals de castratie, maar er is ook de opvolging van een eerste beginsel (Chaos, Alalu), een hemelgod (Ouranos, Anu), een graangod (Kronos, Kumarbi) en een stormgod (Zeus, Tešub). De parallel strekt zich uit buiten de tekst: Zeus en Tešub worden ongeveer hetzelfde afgebeeld.
Hoe de oosterse verhaalstof in Griekenland bekend is geworden, is niet met zekerheid te zeggen, maar het is vermoedelijk ook de verkeerde vraag. Omdat mensen zo mobiel waren, verspreidde informatie zich altijd. De vraag is eerder of de verhaalstof uit de veertiende eeuw ook bekend was in de achtste, zevende eeuw. Sanchouniathon, de bron van de Filon van Byblos waarover ik al enkele keren blogde, bewijst dat de stof in elk geval op het juiste moment bekend was in Fenicië.
