  1. There is a tiny stub of land (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropol) in England in which the people use a different word for a bread roll than the rest of the country (excepting Coventry, which is a hundred miles away). The UK's dialects can change literally from one street to the next.

  6. Funny dialectal trait in parts of the US: they have a diphtong or even triphtong in the word "but", pronouncing it BAH-et or BWAH-et. One of the guys on the excellent Common Descent podcast does this all the time.

  7. Oh, look! 🎥 Yet another earth-shattering #documentary about #Clojure, because the world was obviously desperate for more #Lisp #dialects in #film form. Can't wait to see how they turn parentheses into plot twists. 🙄

  8. Working with an #acting #coaching client on an accent with material that lands so differently when more vowel substitutions are included. The entire feel of who their character is shifted. So cool to hear and see them explore those options.

  17. In Southern California the phrase "coffee shop" used to mean "diner", but now it means a place that you can lounge around in with espresso drinks. See e.g. the pictured sign: Jack's started up in 1933. Does anyone have any idea when this changed? I feel like it was sometime in the 90s but don't really know.

I'm also curious how widespread this usage was (or is, if it's still used anywhere). Just Southern California? All of California? Elsewhere?

  18. I might be a nitpick but there has always been one thing I can't audibly stand. I am not sure if it is regional, but when folks end something that is supposed to end in an “ING” with an een sound so "working" becomes "workeen" and "becoming" becomes be commeen." I hear it and it just grates on my nerves. Of course I don't say anything, however I inwardly cringe. I should not as it is unique. I'm curious as to where that speech pattern originates. Is it from an older dialect? Is it an old English thing?

  20. Perplexing name for a plant-based sandwich. The beginning ‘Æ'’ is a dialectal (West Jutland) variant of the negation ‘ikke’ (‘not’). Perhaps, it was used for its similarity to the word ‘æg’ (‘egg’). The word ‘BAƆCON’ is a very weird spelling. I know that vegan alternatives often use modified spellings of what they are emulating, but nonsensical IPA symbols?
