Has anyone used #VSCode with the #Dendron plugin to do knowledge management, perhaps as a substitute for #Obsidian? Thinking ahead as to what I might use should my request to install Obs on my work MacBook be denied. Apparently it's pretty good.

@balterwenjamin42 @voitech It looks very uninformed to me, because basically every other Markdown linked note plattform - #Logseq, #Foam, #Dendron, #SilverBulletMD, #Joplin, #Zettlr - they *all* use the WikiLink standard or at the least support it. It‘s omnipresent in the open-source ecosystem.

@RampantCollide there are a bunch of interesting note taking / #PersonalKnowledgeManagement tools with various combinations of open source, local-first, and/or Markdown based, features. The combination I almost settled on was #Dendron on the desktop with #Noteless on mobile and #Syncthing to keep them in sync. Eventually I went back to using #FreePlane for to-do and the afformentioned system for temporary notes.

There are lots of interesting tools in this space.

@nekodojo @EmbraceBecoming @pluralistic there are many #Obsidian clones or Personal Knowledge Management or note taking tools out there such as #LogSeq, #Dendron, #Joplin, #FOAM, Noteless, and others.

There are so many, it can be difficult to choose one. They have different philosophies, levels of openness, methods of storage, business models, platform support, etc...

From what I can tell Obsidian is one of the most polished and feature rich.

I tried #Dendron on my laptop with Noteless on my mobile device with #SyncThing to synchronize them.

While it was all very fancy, I, eventually went back to #FreePlane with Noteless for ideas that occur away from home, then copy to #FreePlane when I get home. If I have to search something that is not visible in the SVG of my #FreePlane diagram, I use A code on the raw XML.

It's not fancy, but it works and I trust it.

@liztai this is why, when I started looking for modern alternatives to #FreePlane for #PersonalKnowledgeManagement , I settled on #Dendron, which takes #LocalFirst seriously.

Unfortunately, their funding model didn't pan out, and they had to stop (regular) development https://github.com/dendronhq/dendron/discussions/3890

Then again, Dendron, is #AGPL3 licenced and the data is local, and in Markdown format, and the VSCode extension still works, so this is much better than if it had been proprietary. Which is the point

Dendron also includes a powerful refactoring tool, so you can easily change this hierarchy later.

I use Dendron with the PARA method (Projects - Areas - Resources - Archives), which requires frequent changes in the hierarchy with having to move inactive or completed projects to the archives, and it works perfectly

I wish more notes apps was designed with the same "hierarchy-first" organizational method like Dendron. It's just perfect for how my brain works.

For those that don't know, hierarchy-first is where you decided where your notes are going to be stored right away. In Dendron, this is done by how you name the file and separating levels by using "."

Example: A file named "science.nuclear.three-mile-island-accident" will be rendered as shown in the picture

Just converted all my #notes \ #KnowledgeBase over to #Logseq from #Dendron

It’s a nice piece of #foss and has a mobile app which I very much have missed to this point.

I've been looking into converting the AWS docs into knowledge vaults for #Dendron, #Obsidian, and potentially #Logseq formats so that people could expand their PKM vaults to include official docs content for backlinks, transclusion, etc.

Will the AWS docs on the AWS website still be CC-BY-SA licensed, with MIT licensing for code blocks, or will the docs lose all licensing as a result, too?

I've decided to stick with Dendron as my note taker. It really works for me and I love using it! One of the most important aspects about a note taker is that it can survive for a long time. And what can survive for longer than a VS Code plugin interacting with local markdown files synced to GitHub?

It's weird how our relationship to software has changed over the years. The note-taking extension for VS Code, Dendron, was absolutely perfect for me. The way you organize notes in it and can also link stuff together just meshed really well with my brain

But since it's placed into maintenance mode and no longer under active development, I have this little goblin in the back of my mind saying that I should move away from it asap, even though it works perfectly as-is

@mlibby while reading up on #vscodium, that I discovered while checking out #Dendron, I was slightly surprised at just how much Microsoft seemed to be using its telemetry for developer surveillance. This naturally lead to discussions on their motivations for #VSCode and #GitHub and the fate of #atom. Although mostly speculative, it was credible and scary.

I'll have to ask about telemetry policy at work. Then again, nobody seems to be worried about #PostMan, so I won't hold my breath.

It may not look like much, but it's a functioning first step using #Astro to build a static site from some #Dendron notes.

I'm gonna keep using it
