  1. I just updated my standard data storage stack for transport and archival . Earlier I used 7-zip basically for everything. But now I’ve switched to more modern stack, files are now ###.tar.zst.age yeah, tar + Zstandard compression + age encryption. And in case it’s something really important then there is par2 on top of that. #datastorage #dataarchival #compression #encryption

  2. Anyone know offhand what format filename a Strava export has? I closed my account many years ago and I've no idea what I've done with the download. But if it's a standard(ish) type of filename, I can find it with, uh, find and locate and whatnots.

(I can't remember my user ID, sadly, if that's part of the filename, but I'm hoping it mentions Strava or something...)

  3. Some time ago, I was asked to share notes and details of how I archived my old CDROM media and I did reply in the thread, but never really posted the guide I wrote otherwise.

So here is the crappiest guide to dumping CD/DVD images on Linux/Unix-likes, in case it happens to be of use to anyone.

  4. These little pieces of chinesium crap that convert from IDE/PATA to SATA are like 4$ and work wonderfully.

None of the crappy USB ones ever work correctly as they try to abstract too much somehow.

  5. Hey everyone, by some stroke of luck the Spotpass servers for the Wii U and 3DS were not yet shutdown so it is still possible to obtain and submit archives.

If you have a Wii U or 3DS I highly encourage you to follow the guide on this site to submit dumps.
Even if you don't please spread the word so we can get as many dumps as possible and save as much content as we can.

  6. Reminder for anyone with a Wii U or 3DS that it is only 2 days until the Nintendo Network services shutdown.

If you have a 3DS or Wii U you should please consider archiving #Spotpass data before the shutdown date because all unarchived data will be gone forever.

(Even if you don't have a Wii U or 3DS please spread the word and boost this post for visibility)

More details about Spotpass archival project here:
    spotpassarchive.github.io

Archived data helps preserve the unique online components of games and can also help @pretendo with games revival.

  7. Remember, the D in #Git stands for distributed, so a single takedown shouldn't affect access to source code... wait.

  8. Sometime back in (I think) 2000, I picked up a bootleg CD labeled "Photoshop Plugin Essentials". This is a mass archive of 16- and 32-bit Photoshop plugins, mostly scene rips. No real sorting so you'll have to dig through it yourself, but I've found a couple neat ones in there. A good number of them will also work in Paint Shop Pro.

  9. Oh my FUCKING GOD

I finished dumping 99.99% of a very old, damaged, backup CDROM that was previously unreadable. It took 3 days and I was super excited to find out what old data I put on it. The disc had UDF sessions, because that was common at the time for just Adding Files to non-rewritable media.

So I mount that shit in my Windows 98SE box, and lo and behold, this is all that was on it.

I would be absolutely upset if it wasn't so fucking funny

  10. More tales from the CD Dumping Adventures:

If you have media with visible damage on the label side all the way to the reflective layer, it turns out putting a piece of clear tape over the affected area absolutely helps?

I don't fully understand why, but also LIGHT PHYSICS are complicated.

Probably something about the substrate being separate from the reflective coating that bounces the light back, and the properties of clear Canada Post Branded Packing Tape?

  11. In the process of dumping my old media, and my main takeaway so far is:

20$ per disc Verbatim with the azo blue coating highest quality, stored properly, looks pristine: Mostly unreadable

30$ per spindle of 300, Cursor Colorful brand shitty see through discs in 6 colors visible from planet neptune that explode if you expose them to direct sunlight, stored loose in a crate near the water heater, flaking off, visible dark spots and holes: reads 99.9% fine.

    azo = snake oil

  12. @IPXFong I got you, I just wrote the world's crappiest guide to dumping your old CDROMs on Linux here:

    gist.github.com/mrdaemon/925f1

It covers my process as well as some hot tips and tricks to deal with audio tracks on hybrid media, and how to attempt to read through degraded/damaged media.

This is not EVERYTHING, but it should be a good starting point, I think.

  13. Does anyone have ideas on how to manage, store, and catalog a collection of 300+ screenshots and other documents? It would be really cool if it was FOSS. Bonus points if it allows the public to browse either specific entries or the entire database through a web interface.

  14. Here's a quote from a YouTube video I heard earlier today. 'In the modern age of the internet, we live by the motto that if something is online, it stays there. But the truth is that our creations are bound, sooner or later, to be cast into obscurity and forgotten'. Truer words were never spoken, and that's why, if you come across any you and/or others find valuable, I very strongly urge you to back it up and archive it anywhere you can, in as many places you can, be it OneDrive, Dropbox, the Internet Archive or your own website or file storage server. Let's work together to fight #DataRot and preserve as much of our online creations and discoveries as we possibly can! #data #archival #backup #preservation #DataArchival #DataBackup #DataPreservation

  15. @calumn @nedraggett @slumberlandrecords

    Well...

.... you know the best data archival system in existence, no?

    DNA.

Horseshoe crabs are 10 times older than the Himalayas and yet the wee beasties keep passing down that info, year on year, generation on generation. Then don't even use iron in their blood, they're that ancient.

Once we move to a molecular system that's error-correcting like DNA, *then* we can talk about true data archival.

  16. Turns out non of Jeff Rutkowski's (I've probably spelled that wrong) files from jeff.tdrealms.com are available on the #WaybackMachine. This is what happens when you shut down your website and don't archive your stuff! #DataPreservation #archival #DataArchival #DataBackup

  17. @[email protected]:

Socialhome.Network as a searchable federation archive

The Socialhome node socialhome.network/ is both widely federated AND searchable by non-members. It displays both posts AND profile pages even to non-members, which is NOT the case for Diaspora* pods.

If you're looking for specific content from a now-defunct pod, Socialhome may be able to turn that up for you.

You can search for a specific profile by the its handle, e.g., [email protected] or [email protected], for my present and now-defunct Joindiaspora profiles, using the site's Search feature.

My (now-offline at origin) Joindiaspora profile appears as:

    socialhome.network/p/702b2f0c-…

Note that the profile GUID is NOT the same as it would be for my Joindiaspora profle itself (`d8210c0de509264f``). The Diaspora* GUID can be used to construct a URL visible from the Diaspora* Pod you have an account on and are logged in to, but not as a globally-viewable third-party-accessible URL. Socialhome solves this problem.

That is, if you are on Glasswings, this URL links to my Joindiaspora profile:

    diaspora.glasswings.com/people…

But if you're not, it won't. Glasswings users might try a different pod such as Diasp.org:

    diasp.org/people/d8210c0de5092…

Instead, third-party visitors are presented with a log-in / registration page. Socialhome solves this problem specifically.

There may be additional features / API apparent at the Socialhome GitLab repo: git.feneas.org/socialhome/soci…

Noting that that is a FENEAS URL, also likely to go offline in the near future, GitHub:

    github.com/jaywink/socialhome

    Limitations

The downsides to Socialhome seem to be that:
    • References to content and profiles does not follow Diaspora*-assigned GUIDs. That is, there's no automated way to refernece a specific post or profile.
    • I'm not seeing an obvious way of exposing a JSON abstract of posts or profiles --- the Diaspora* trick of appending .json to the end of a URL does not work, and I'm not seeing a JSON abstract in the raw HTML. There may still be an API.
Photos are displayed but appear to be served from the original host, not separately federated. Once the origin host goes offline, photo links / embeds will be broken.

It's not clear how widely or deeply content is federated, though some should be better than none. This option was brought to my attention by @isaackuo in comments here.
