  1. #federation #fediVerse

Forward of some comments by @fla about the latest events in the walled VC gardens and the place #diaspora* actually still embodies in the fedi. Even tho I not only consider that his comments are on spot, without having any idea about the internal situation or discussion of #framasphere, in general there are a few things to point out.

Besides the fact that the diaspora community needs desperately #help by #coders and #developers to further their project, at least that what it sounds like, there is some certain "elitist" tribal viewpoint around that community, at least it feels like that. In general terms, this tribalism is a universal human skill, apparently coded deep into our DNA, and we witness this all the time. It's not different with other communities like #mastodon, or those who come from #twitter and refuse any change or questioning of their evolved culture, or what we experienced when #pluspora came along and started stirring up the fediVerse community by trying to impose their culture evolved on g+.

So, even if I for myself can envision a bright future for diaspora in the fediVerse, and I truly would like to see that community thrive again, as well as considering that their decision to not adopt #activityPub will stay in place, something that actually creates an interesting setup, what would be needed at least is a cooperative behavior with the coders of the platforms that create the bridge to the fediVerse. What we have is some kind of semipermeable wall that integrates but doesn't overwhelm the diaspora space. Last time we had this will to cooperate trully working, at least that's what @Mike mentioned in it's time, was the decisive help and attitude be @Ilya ❤️ . Without that, the integration with the fediVerse will always not only be flawed but probably even deteriorate as running behind coders that are overloaded with their tasks and anything but helpful in their attitude and behavior, sooner or later will perjudicate interaction and federation of the communities. It already did. So if for example framasphere were to reverse course, the cooperation for example with #friendica and #hubzilla, in terms of coding would be key I guess so diaspora can be really considered a part of the fediVerse in the future to come.

Just a few cents of thought, hope D* doesn't become some mayor Tom in our space, yet it looks to me that this isn't a matter of the vast majority of users on both sides, or the coders from over here.

The announcement of #markzuckerberg today is proving us once again that #diaspora has a role to play in today's internet. This was already the case 10 years ago and we never really managed to keep the development pace high, but it still is a reliable piece of software.

I think I should have defended it more when the decision was taken at #framasoft to shut down #framasphere, the biggest french pod. Honestly, we could really have kept it online. I'm not going to go back on what happened now, but I think the important message here is, we need simple, privacy-respectful, easy-to-use social networks, and while diaspora* is far from perfect, it is still answering a need. Microblogging is a different thing and personally I really don't like it.

Maybe it's time to put around the table all the people who are ready to get involved and act?

Socialhome.Network as a searchable federation archive

The Socialhome node socialhome.network/ is both widely federated AND searchable by non-members. It displays both posts AND profile pages even to non-members, which is NOT the case for Diaspora* pods.

If you're looking for specific content from a now-defunct pod, Socialhome may be able to turn that up for you.

You can search for a specific profile by the its handle, e.g., [email protected] or [email protected], for my present and now-defunct Joindiaspora profiles, using the site's Search feature.

My (now-offline at origin) Joindiaspora profile appears as:

    socialhome.network/p/702b2f0c-…

Note that the profile GUID is NOT the same as it would be for my Joindiaspora profle itself (`d8210c0de509264f``). The Diaspora* GUID can be used to construct a URL visible from the Diaspora* Pod you have an account on and are logged in to, but not as a globally-viewable third-party-accessible URL. Socialhome solves this problem.

That is, if you are on Glasswings, this URL links to my Joindiaspora profile:

    diaspora.glasswings.com/people…

But if you're not, it won't. Glasswings users might try a different pod such as Diasp.org:

    diasp.org/people/d8210c0de5092…

Instead, third-party visitors are presented with a log-in / registration page. Socialhome solves this problem specifically.

There may be additional features / API apparent at the Socialhome GitLab repo: git.feneas.org/socialhome/soci…

Noting that that is a FENEAS URL, also likely to go offline in the near future, GitHub:

    github.com/jaywink/socialhome

    Limitations

The downsides to Socialhome seem to be that:
    • References to content and profiles does not follow Diaspora*-assigned GUIDs. That is, there's no automated way to refernece a specific post or profile.
    • I'm not seeing an obvious way of exposing a JSON abstract of posts or profiles --- the Diaspora* trick of appending .json to the end of a URL does not work, and I'm not seeing a JSON abstract in the raw HTML. There may still be an API.
Photos are displayed but appear to be served from the original host, not separately federated. Once the origin host goes offline, photo links / embeds will be broken.

It's not clear how widely or deeply content is federated, though some should be better than none. This option was brought to my attention by @isaackuo in comments here.

  9. This is my new account. #NewHere but not really. Soon to be a former mod of #Pluspora. I'm a writer; currently working on the second in a detective book series. I'm also a student with SNHU (Southern New Hampshire University). I'm studying English Literature and Language.

This account is on Nerdica via #Friendica. I'm definitely new to Friendica.

Time to get busy adding my contacts back! Huzzah!
  10. @mudd0359 Welcome to Mastodon!

You might find other #Pluspora or #GooglePlus / #GPlus refugees by using those hashtags. You can enter a hashtag in Search and then pin the resulting stream to catch any mentions of it.

Post a brief introduction of yourself as well and pin it to your profile to help others find you.

    I'm also diaspora.glasswings.com/u/dred

  11. CW: long quote -- pluspora closing down in a month as the admin passed away unexpectedly
    @[email protected]:
    Dear #Pluspora users,

It is with a heavy heart that we come to you with this post. As many of you already know, our resident IT admin, David Theiry, passed away suddenly. It has been a huge loss to his family and to the Pluspora family as well.

With David’s passing the Pluspora pod will also be going away. His passing essentially prevents us from maintaining the site as it is today. Nathan and I looked at several possibilities. We considered a Plan A and a Plan B. Plan A would have been nice, but unfortunately didn’t work out. Special thanks to those who offered to step up and replace the work David did after his passing, but this is just something no one can fix. David was truly irreplaceable, in many ways, Pluspora being only one of them.

Here are some details you need to know:

The site is slated to go offline by the end of March but we encourage everyone to backup their data by Feb 28th and make an alternate diaspora account as soon as possible, due to instability within the pod. All pod data will be deleted from the server when the pod goes offline and be non-retrievable.

If you go into your Account settings, you can export a backup copy of your data. We recommend you do this, if you want to hang onto the content you have posted on Pluspora over the years. Go to Settings and scroll down to Export Data headings. Please download your data by February 28, as we cannot guarantee it will be retrievable during March.

VERY IMPORTANT: The daily #Checkin will continue on Diaspora for now. Su Ann and her team of mods have a backup plan to keep running on Diaspora without the Pluspora pod. That may change in the future, but just know that it won't go away when the Pluspora pod does. If you have experienced this community, please check it out by seraching the hashtage #Checkin.

    Plan B details

Plan B was acknowledging there was no real path forward with the Pluspora pod, but that we would try to find a few options where we could go together after Pluspora goes offline. Please let us know via comments which of the following you would be most interested in pursuing. Remember, it's not one or the other, you can choose several options and see what sticks. Nathan and I don't want to leave anyone feeling stranded or left behind due to these unforseen and sudden tragic circumstances.
A new and exciting Pluspora community on Mighty Networks. Nathan and I have been exploring the possibility of continuing the Pluspora community as a whole on Mighty Networks which is a social network platform for communities. Nathan and I would financially and technically support this platform and are currently building this space for Pluspora and other users interested in continuing the Google Plus tradition and spirit of community. We’d love everyone’s feedback, as this is a new opportunity to make some changes. More details to follow. (Side note: there are communities and you can edit posts!). We welcome anyone who wants to pitch in.

    Other options for Pluspora users

Twitter Community for Pluspora users. Nathan reached out to Twitter and they have given him early access to create a Twitter Community -- it’s similar to a Google+ Community. Twitter Communities is in early stages for Twitter and it’s a great chance for us Google+ and #PlusporaRefugees to give some good feedback on future features. And a great way to reconnect with Pluspora folks. Nathan and I will be mods of the Community starting out, so you can catch us there. There will be lots of potential for how to use the Community and feedback will be welcome. There’s loads of potential. Plus, a lot of Google+ refugees are already on Twitter, so it’s a good time to reconnect. Use the following tweet to join: twitter.com/babylontales/statu…

Migrating to another Diaspora pod. As you likely know, Pluspora is just a pod or instance in the Diaspora fediverse. Feel free to look at other pods and consider creating a new account on one of them. For a lot of you, Pluspora was your introduction to Diaspora and the fediverse. It doesn’t have to be your last. Feel free to give pods you like a shout out in the comments.

Mastodon is a Twitter-like fediverse platform. Mastodon is a great alternative to Diaspora that keeps you in the fediverse. Unlike Diaspora though, Mastodon takes most of its design choices from Twitter. It is very much a micro-blogging format. It also uses instances and is a lot of fun. It also has many mobile apps, unlike Diaspora.

Pillowfort.social is a Tumblr alternative. If you want to pivot to something different, but don’t want to go to the major players like Facebook and Twitter, there’s Pillowfort. It rose up after Tumblr dropped NSFW content (like Diaspora, Pillowfort also allows NSFW content). It is currently in beta and requires a one-time fee of $5 to join, this helps pay for their upkeep -- they have no ads. It has Communities, which I know is something we all missed from Google+.
Please feel free to make other suggestions in the comments. The community belongs to everyone, and these are just suggestions that we came up with. There definitely needs to be discussion and support for everyone.
    The ark sets sail again.

    Conclusion

We are also sending this information out via email to a lot of you. Not as many as we would have liked, because cataloging email addresses from Diaspora is a time-consuming process. David and I never wanted to spam anyone with emails, so we didn't really create a database proactively. Nathan and I have spent many tedious hours manually filtering through as many active users from the past several years to send out this notice to. We won’t hit everyone’s inbox and for some of you it may go to your junk folder. But we wanted to reach out to as many folks as possible about this, especially those who were active and had content that needed to be exported.

That said, it would help us tremendously if you submitted your email address to us here: forms.gle/HXvHsAFTcvY5JM7A9.
We will NOT spam you or send anything more than the alerts about closing of the pod, and the what comes next, if you ware interested in knowing.

Please share this post. Thank you all for keeping the community spirit alive for as long as you have. I truly hope we can continue in some way. I have no attachment to any particular outcome, save that we aren't torn apart again.

  14. @dredmorbius shame that Diaspora doesn't have #Zot / #Zap's #NomadicIdentity... Would make these instance deaths easier to deal with...
At least with #Mastodon you can migrate your followers, somewhat, but I wish we could also easily migrate our content...

Any specific reason you went for #Glasswings? I kinda expected you to move to #PlusPora.

Personally I don't think I'll bother creating another #Diaspora* profile, as I barely used my #JoinDiaspora one anyway.

I must admit that one of the reasons I pick JD at the time, was that it seemed to be the flagship instance, and I expected that one to be one of the last to fall. Guess I was wrong. ;)

  17. Hey, Plusporans!

I posted this as a reply to someone who was reposting the announcement about the issues Pluspora was having lately, but I figured I would post this just in general.
I would like to extend an open invitation to you and anyone who is wanting or needing to setup another fediverse account (due to the unfortunate circumstances at Pluspora) to come check out Friendica. Our friendly Friendica instances speak many languages, so they reach in to many other parts of the fediverse - the GNU Socials, Pleromas, Mastondons, etc, as well as Hubzillas and of course, Diasporas. This invitation is not to dissuade from choosing any particular path, but as I don't see enough cheering for all the great improvements that go in to Friendica all the time, I figure I'd make some noise, especially in light of the changes (or possible changes?) going on at Pluspora. social.isurf.ca/display/c443a5
