  1. feels kinda lame that bahn.de has a 15 month out of date information page about all the useful help you're going to get as a Ukrainian refugee on arrival in germany, available in 4 languages, with the only restriction being that you need a time machine to take you back to before all that stuff was dismantled.

  2. So, in recent search if I possibly maybe have a scan of certain document in my mail somewhere, I came upon an old picture of mine, sent to one of my past employers, for the purpose of using it on the office entry badge. Except… it somehow got corrupted? And this was stored on a gmail account, so there's little chance of me mishandling data.

  3. Here's a quote from a YouTube video I heard earlier today. 'In the modern age of the internet, we live by the motto that if something is online, it stays there. But the truth is that our creations are bound, sooner or later, to be cast into obscurity and forgotten'. Truer words were never spoken, and that's why, if you come across any you and/or others find valuable, I very strongly urge you to back it up and archive it anywhere you can, in as many places you can, be it OneDrive, Dropbox, the Internet Archive or your own website or file storage server. Let's work together to fight #DataRot and preserve as much of our online creations and discoveries as we possibly can! #data #archival #backup #preservation #DataArchival #DataBackup #DataPreservation

  4. One of the greatest things about academic research these days is most seminars can easily be recorded (thanks to lecture capture technology, hybrid participation, and/or things taking place entirely online).

And yet most of these videos are hosted by cloud services run by third parties who might decide to delete things at any time, or by university services who change the rules on a whim.

A wealth of knowledge and culture lost. It really bugs me.
