  1. Friends of Web #scraping, #datahoarding and @internetarchive; did you know that can transform any #WARC archive in an easily viewable #ZIM archive?

Check other warc2zim features at github.com/openzim/warc2zim

  2. I have a ton of old obsolete random CD-ROMs 'round here from the past four decades or so

everything from random magazine disks to obsolete local computer programs to phone books from 1994 to obscure video games

Most of them I can't find online. Would it be worth it to rip and preserve them somehow or somewhere, and if so, how is the best way to do it? Are there any real legal risks I'd take with this?

  3. Worried that my DVD ripping project has hit a snag due to a failing DVD player, I bought two new UHD compatible external DVD players.

This is not trivial. They aren't making many new DVD players, especially not UHD compatible ones, and then figuring out which of them is LibreDrive compatible is a whole other thing.

Finally it turns out that to flash LibreDrive, you need an older version of makemkv than I had...

That's on top of the fact that AFAICT there's no official LibreDrive download. You have to hunt on a forum for it, and it comes from a guy named "MartyMcNuts", which totally makes me feel safe about using that firmware.

  4. Is there like a digital zine swapping Discord/dc++/irc channel/soulseek channel/forum/SOMEWHERE like that, where I can ask for 3 zines I've wanted that are fully unavailable to be bought digitally?

    Specifically queer zines as well...

  5. tip: if your drive is so tired of a bad CD that it spits the CD out...
push the CD back in! Maybe in a different position. Literally. I moved the drive from the floor on the bed and the disc keeps now.

Or maybe it was `--scsi-timeout=1000`. Either way, CD is cracked but is happy:

  6. Finally got around downloading all of the things I bought on gog.
    And well "Total: 23.41 MiB/s | Remaining: 7341 (9.97TiB) ETA: 5d 05h 40m" 🥲

  7. Ah, #Meta, the benevolent overlord of data hoarding, is generously receiving a $3.3 billion tax break for its teeny-tiny $10 billion data fortress in #Louisiana. 😱👏 One has to wonder if they'll use the savings to buy more servers or just a bigger piggy bank for all those sweet, sweet #subsidies. 🤑🐷

  8. Linux Mint datahoarding/backup tip: "apt download" fetches the .deb files of both the package and its dependencies

    #linuxmint #datahoarding

    E.g.:

    • apt download vlc
    • apt download dolphin

Only problems are it requires sudo, it only works with one package at a time (so apt download vlc dolphin won't work), and the script that comes with it for easy installation runs apt (but replacing apt for dpkg -i solves that).

There's also apt-get download, which doesn't require sudo nor comes with a .sh file expecting apt, but it won't download dependencies either.

    Hope it helps someone. =)

  9. Looking at the rclone when migrating files off of the old disks onto the new ones is kinda interesting.

Esp. Because I'm very good at naming things...

I literally have no idea what these files are or where they come from at this point. But I'm also too afraid to just delete them.

  10. After stepping back for a couple of years, my #datahoarding is back with a vengeance and I spent most of last night studying #yt-dlp's man page and updating my configuration 🤓

  11. 3-2-1-1-1 Backup Rule (Apocalypse Edition)

    3 Backups
    2 Different media
    1 Offsite backup
1 Backup in an Arctic vault
    1 Extra-planetary backup

Because if your data doesn't survive a meteor strike, did you even have a backup strategy?

  12. Does anyone else remember Tux Racer, the old #Linux racing game from way back? Does anyone else also remember tuxracer.fubaby.com, where people would share their courses? Any way to download all the courses again? Sorry, but I want to upload all of them on the Internet Archive. I could only retrieve some of them from the Wayback Machine.

  13. Guys, get out your Internet Archive accounts. A video game repository called Myrient is closing down tomorrow, and a staggering 390+ terabytes of data will disappear with it. I am currently saving webpages at /Eggman's Arcade Repository/!EXTRAS/. Unfortunately, nearly all the saves are 404 errors, even though the files can still be downloaded directly from the site, so we may need to upload them.

  14. We have just had another Internet casualty. Replacementdocs.com was a website that hosted scans of video game manuals for anyone to download. It was most active in the 2000s. I just checked to see the state of the website after months of broken downloads, and—yep—it's gone forever.

Don't fret, you can find every video game manual that was on the website at the point of closure here: archive.org/details/p31-replac.

  15. Yet another reason to not enable passkeys anywhere.

    blog.timcappalli.me/p/passkeys

TL;DR - If an idiot website uses your passkey to encrypt your data, losing/deleting the passkey will almost certainly mean losing your data.

Of course we should all be backing up our stuff locally instead of trusting cloud services, especially for irreplaceable things like pictures and movies, but lets be real, the average user doesn't.

  16. So, all this #DataHoarding I've been up to has me wondering:

Are tape backups still a thing?

Like, if you want to store a petabyte or so of data and you don't care about random access, it seems like that'd be an economical way to do it. Or does everyone just store their stuff "in the cloud" now?

  17. I’m considering a used Synology DS916+ 4‑Bay NAS with 4x 12 TB Seagate Exos X12 drives.
I've heard that this model isn’t the most reliable, but the plan is to replace the drives one by one over time. Building such a setup from scratch would cost more than $2000, especially with rising HDD and memory prices and ongoing supply issues.

Any insights or horror stories about used NAS gear?

  18. Thinking about building a home NAS. I've already accumulated nearly 1 TB of critical data, and while I do have backups in AWS Deep Archive, Proton Drive, and Infomaniak KDrive, I still don’t have any local backups - which is starting to bother me. Plus, I'd love to finally set up a proper Plex library.

  19. One of my #NewYearsResolutions is to hoard more data, so I picked up an open-box 10TB hard drive. This will serve as a second copy of all the stuff I've got stashed in my pile of old, smaller drives. I also have two 2TB HDDs I'll soon be freeing up for #DataHoarding use.

  20. 🎉 Oh joy, another thrilling installment in the riveting saga of "Backing Up Emails: The Movie!" 🍿 This time, our hero battles the ever-terrifying Gmail Takeout, valiantly dodging Google's arbitrary account-locking antics to archive a whopping 5.7GiB of riveting email history. 🎩✨ Clearly, data hoarding is the new extreme sport! 🏆📧
