  1. Ah, #Meta, the benevolent overlord of data hoarding, is generously receiving a $3.3 billion tax break for its teeny-tiny $10 billion data fortress in #Louisiana. 😱👏 One has to wonder if they'll use the savings to buy more servers or just a bigger piggy bank for all those sweet, sweet #subsidies. 🤑🐷

  6. Linux Mint datahoarding/backup tip: "apt download" fetches the .deb files of both the package and its dependencies

    #linuxmint #datahoarding

    E.g.:

    • apt download vlc
    • apt download dolphin

Only problems are it requires sudo, it only works with one package at a time (so apt download vlc dolphin won't work), and the script that comes with it for easy installation runs apt (but replacing apt for dpkg -i solves that).

There's also apt-get download, which doesn't require sudo nor comes with a .sh file expecting apt, but it won't download dependencies either.

    Hope it helps someone. =)

  7. Looking at the rclone when migrating files off of the old disks onto the new ones is kinda interesting.

Esp. Because I'm very good at naming things...

I literally have no idea what these files are or where they come from at this point. But I'm also too afraid to just delete them.

Any way to download all the courses again? Sorry, but I want to upload all of them on the Internet Archive. I could only retrieve some of them from the Wayback Machine.

  19. Guys, get out your Internet Archive accounts. A video game repository called Myrient is closing down tomorrow, and a staggering 390+ terabytes of data will disappear with it. I am currently saving webpages at /Eggman's Arcade Repository/!EXTRAS/. Unfortunately, nearly all the saves are 404 errors, even though the files can still be downloaded directly from the site, so we may need to upload them.

  24. We have just had another Internet casualty. Replacementdocs.com was a website that hosted scans of video game manuals for anyone to download. It was most active in the 2000s. I just checked to see the state of the website after months of broken downloads, and—yep—it's gone forever.

Don't fret, you can find every video game manual that was on the website at the point of closure here: archive.org/details/p31-replac.

  29. Yet another reason to not enable passkeys anywhere.

    blog.timcappalli.me/p/passkeys

TL;DR - If an idiot website uses your passkey to encrypt your data, losing/deleting the passkey will almost certainly mean losing your data.

Of course we should all be backing up our stuff locally instead of trusting cloud services, especially for irreplaceable things like pictures and movies, but lets be real, the average user doesn't.

  34. So, all this #DataHoarding I've been up to has me wondering:

Are tape backups still a thing?

Like, if you want to store a petabyte or so of data and you don't care about random access, it seems like that'd be an economical way to do it. Or does everyone just store their stuff "in the cloud" now?

  35. I’m considering a used Synology DS916+ 4‑Bay NAS with 4x 12 TB Seagate Exos X12 drives.
I've heard that this model isn’t the most reliable, but the plan is to replace the drives one by one over time. Building such a setup from scratch would cost more than $2000, especially with rising HDD and memory prices and ongoing supply issues.

Any insights or horror stories about used NAS gear?

  36. Thinking about building a home NAS. I've already accumulated nearly 1 TB of critical data, and while I do have backups in AWS Deep Archive, Proton Drive, and Infomaniak KDrive, I still don’t have any local backups - which is starting to bother me. Plus, I'd love to finally set up a proper Plex library.

  37. One of my #NewYearsResolutions is to hoard more data, so I picked up an open-box 10TB hard drive. This will serve as a second copy of all the stuff I've got stashed in my pile of old, smaller drives. I also have two 2TB HDDs I'll soon be freeing up for #DataHoarding use.
