Lachlan Murdoch has won the succession battle to control his father Rupert's media empire. Anointed by Rupert, he faced opposition from his siblings, Prudence, Elisabeth and James, but on Monday, they agreed to take $1.1 billion each for their shares in the family's businesses. @npr takes a look at Lachlan's background, how he gained momentum as heir, and political beliefs — he is generally believed to be more conservative than his father, and in 2021 described Fox News as "center and right."

If you assume (correctly) that #Conservativism is about maintaining hierarchies, what Simeon is really saying here is "workers exist to serve their betters & should be grateful for the few crumbs we drop from on high."

Anyone noticed how we have heard nobody talk about the alt right all year anymore?
They are still around, but now we finally just call them fascists. And they probably simply call themselves "the right", because they are now the only right.

@chad Ah yes, the “true conservative.” A lonely animal since Reform/Harper banished them to the wilderness. There is no room for a patriotic Diefenbaker or Bob Stanfield or Joe Clark in the party that stole the name “Conservative Party of Canada” in its rebranding. Much like the party of Lincoln to the south becoming the party of racism and xenophobia, today’s Cons are just that, con-men and con-women. They’ve wrapped ugliness and decidedly unCanadian policies and practices in the Maple Leaf.
I’m not a conservative. But I sure have respect for true conservatives. Like Clark, Stanfield. I have no respect for the pretenders who are, in fact (see their policies! Listen to their rhetoric!) fascists. Conservatism is not fascism. -
This is not mine or about me but it's a fascinating interview/dialog about an adult's evolving politics. I think it's so important to keep people you disagree with but care about in dialog, and this is of course just confirmation bias but I loved this video:

[#PierrePoilievre] is the guy responsible for the death of #centrist #conservativism, years of #Liberal spending and the birth of what is now the maple version of #MAGA. If there is a #ProgressiveConservative left these days, it is probably @markcarney.bsky.social."

A quotation from Franklin Roosevelt
Too many who prate about saving democracy are really only interested in saving things as they were. Democracy should concern itself also with things as they should be.

Profiles in cowardice. How the law and order, family values crowd embraced a serial rapist, traitor, seditionist, thief, and fraud-monger to satiate their desire for power; i.e., nihilists always become authoritarians.

In its purest form, conservatism encourages and promotes individual liberty and personal responsibility.

#Science #Conservatives #Conservativism #ScientificThinking: "So sometimes, science can triumph over conservativism. But it's far more common for conservativism to trump science. The most common form of this is "eisegesis," where someone looks at a "pile of data in order to find confirmation in it of what they already 'know' to be true." Think of those anti-mask weirdos who cling to three studies that "prove" masks don't work. Or the climate deniers who have 350 studies "proving" climate change isn't real. Eisegesis proves ivermectin works, that vaccinations are linked to autism, and that water fluoridation is a Communist plot. So long as you confine yourself to considering evidence that confirms your beliefs, you can prove anything.
Respecting norms is a good rule of thumb, but it's a lousy rule. The politicization of science starts with the right's intolerance for ambiguity – not Scientific American's Harris endorsement."

Here's the biggest problem I see right now with the #Democrats #election #strategy.
They are leaning into fear, and fear doesn't get people to move or #vote #left.
Fear is the weapon of the right. It is their tool, and making people fearful inherently makes them want to go into protection mode. That, in turn, attracts them toward #conservativism.
Fear will always push people #Right, even if the source of that fear is the right. It might push them to a slightly different Right, but it's definitely not moving them left. It's not a good way to motivate people already inclined toward the left.
The emotion that does push left is Anger. #Anger has the opposite effect. It deflates conservativism - even if the anger is directed at the left! It pushes people to seek justice, and pushes people left.
#Biden can't #campaign on fear, he has to campaign on rage. That emotional well is deep and untapped. There is so much to be angry about and it could all be laid at #Trump's feet.
The campaign can't be about fear of losing #democracy, it has to be anger at the #rights we've already lost.
Point out the #injustice to the black communities in America, to the rural communities in America. Point out the injustice of big tech, offshored jobs. Point out the injustice of a government controlled by the mega wealthy. Present yourself as the standard bearer and direct the anger and rage toward the #polls.

This is like a total non-surprise.
#Conservativism always means to have no binding rules for #power.
Be nice if you absolutely have to and be a monster whenever you can.

[W[hen leading American conservatives praised foreign autocrats such as Kaiser Wilhelm II, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and Francisco Franco as their ideological comrades in arms. Until now, however, no modern president has lauded autocracy as a model for America.

CW: NSFW: I guess this one counts as political too?
Conservative: "Yes! Now we have succeeded in our goal of eliminating all cock-sucking. Never again will anyone suck a dick!"
Conservative: *Is so excited by his win over freedom, he gets a massive boner, a hard and swollen one, the kind only a suck can relieve.*
Conservative: "Oh no."

I'm actually ultra-#conservative, I just want society to go back way further than the other people, to when clothing was optional and #sex was a communal activity.

"Research has found that children as young as 6 months old can perceive race-based differences. Limiting content denies children opportunities to learn about themselves, and to relate to other people...."
This is exactly the goal of right-wing conservatives & fascists. They *want* children not to relate to people who are different from them. Makes it easier to control them when they're adults and easier to scapegoat the Other.

#FrankWilhoit's definition of "#conservativism" remains a classic:
> There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

Conservatives hope that our distant descendants will be very similar to us.
Progressives hope that our distant descendants will be very different from us.
