Venezuela’s Acting President Thanks Trump and Rubio for Oil Deal

The United States and Venezuela signed a major deal regarding oil and Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodriguez is thankful to President Donald J. Trump and State Secretary Marco Rubio for it, according to a news report by Newsmax.

Venezuelan acting President Delcy Rodriguez thanked President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for the oil agreement between the two countries.

The deal drew rave reviews from conservatives and criticism from Democrats.

“That is why we chose the path of diplomacy with the United States of America, to transform our differences into cooperation. And that cooperation into investment, production, well-being, and concrete results for Venezuelans,” Rodriguez said in a televised address Saturday.

“I thank President Donald Trump, Secretary Rubio, and his government for the efforts made by both their administration and ours, as well as the entire Venezuelan team that dedicated their time to reaching this agreement,” she said.

Rodriguez said the pact would run 25 years and target production of more than 1.5 million barrels a day.

She said Venezuela would receive about $19 a barrel, which could generate more than $209 billion for the state.

“It’s no use having our oil reserves underground just so they appear in a statistic or an accounting record and we can say we’re the country with the world’s largest reserves when we can’t convert them into development for Venezuela,” she said.

“Our reserves must be transformed into well-being, prosperity, and happiness for this country and enable us to restore our productive capacity so that we can establish ourselves as an energy and manufacturing powerhouse.“

Rodriguez added that the change would strengthen energy security in the Western Hemisphere and promote greater stability and balance in global energy markets.

Trump announced the agreement Friday, calling it “THE BIGGEST OIL DEAL IN WORLD HISTORY!”

It covers 65 billion barrels of proven reserves across 17 fields, with the U.S. receiving 55% of output, including an ownership stake.

The White House has described 100-year development rights, a term Rodriguez did not repeat.

US Visa of Biden-awarded Iraqi National Revoked

The United States officially revoked the US visa of Taif Sami Mohammed Al Shakarchi, the Iraqi national who was awarded by the failed Biden Administration in 2022, according to US State Department citing her placement on the Terror Watchlist of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

In a New York Post report, Taif Sami Mohammed Al Shakarchi’s alleged links to the Islamic terrorist regime of Iran and Iran-backed militias in Iraq drew headlines. She was also the target of two Republicans in the US House of Representatives accused of being the “key enabler of terrorist funding in Iraq.”

The U.S. Department of State has revoked the visa of an Iraqi national who was presented an award by the Biden Administration for her purported role in fighting corruption and her advocacy for “gender equity.”

Taif Sami Mohammed Al Shakarchi was given the International Woman of Courage Award in 2022 by former Secretary of State (Antony Blinken) and former First Lady Jill Biden.

The award recognized “women from around the globe who have demonstrated exceptional courage, strength, and leadership in advocating for peace, justice, human rights, gender equity and equality, and the empowerment of women and girls, in all their diversity.”

This Iraqi national’s visa has now been revoked by the State Department following her placement on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Terror Watchlist. She is no longer present in the United States.

America Sanctions ICC President and Trial Lawyer

Following the start of the campaign to dismantle the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) threat to national sovereignty, the United States Department of State announced it has sanctioned two ICC officials namely their president Tomoko Akane of Japan and trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye of Senegal.

The Trump Administration has been clear: the International Criminal Court (ICC) is a corrupt and fatally politicized supranational court that has maliciously abused its authority and exceeded its mandate.  We will not tolerate its assault on state sovereignty. 

In furtherance of the diplomatic campaign we launched last month to address the ICC’s abuses of power, I am designating two ICC officials – President of the ICC, Tomoko Akane of Japan, and ICC Senior Trial Lawyer, Abdoulaye Seye of Senegal – pursuant to Executive Order 14203, “Imposing Sanctions on the International Criminal Court.”  These individuals have directly engaged in efforts by the ICC to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute officials whose government has not consented to ICC jurisdiction. 

The ICC has repeatedly attempted to assert authority over nationals of the United States and other countries that have not consented to its jurisdiction or ratified the Rome Statute.  This sets a dangerous precedent for all nations.  

Our whole of government campaign to dismantle the threat posed by the ICC to national sovereignty will be sweeping and we expect more countries to join our campaign by ending their funding and participation in this politicized and unaccountable court. The ICC’s ability to target American nationals and those of other non-States Parties must end. The Trump Administration stands ready to take additional measures, if necessary, to systematically dismantle the ICC until it is incapable of threatening American sovereignty.

Avant même de parler politique, je préfère préciser une chose : je ne fais pas de politique. Ce n’est pas ce qui m’intéresse dans cette lecture.

Ce que j’aime avant tout, ce sont les mots, la culture, les réflexions qu’un livre peut transmettre… et honnêtement, il faut reconnaître une chose à Nicolas Sarkozy : il sait parler.

Malheureusement, mon application de lecture a complètement buggué et j’ai perdu toutes les phrases que j’avais surlignées… ce qui me frustre énormément, parce qu’il y avait beaucoup de passages que j’avais réellement envie de garder et de vous partager.

Mais justement, si j’ai pris le temps de souligner autant de citations, c’est bien que cette lecture m’a marquée d’une certaine manière.

Dans ce livre, il parle de l’injustice qu’il estime avoir vécue, mais aussi de la prison en elle-même : la difficulté d’adaptation, l’envers du décor, le quotidien carcéral, le personnel pénitentiaire, et surtout ce retour brutal à une autre réalité.

Au-delà de l’image publique, on découvre aussi un homme qui parle de sa famille, de ses proches, et de la force que l’amour peut apporter dans des moments particulièrement difficiles.

Et c’est probablement ce qui m’a le plus intéressée dans cette lecture : cette part plus humaine, plus intime, loin des simples débats politiques.

Honnêtement, j’ai énormément apprécié cette lecture. Je ne m’attendais absolument pas à aimer autant.

J’avais une certaine appréhension avant de commencer, notamment par peur d’une lecture compliquée, avec un vocabulaire trop lourd ou trop politique… mais pas du tout.

C’est limpide, bien écrit, posé.
La lecture se fait naturellement, avec fluidité, sans chercher à en faire trop. Et c’est justement ce qui la rend aussi accessible et agréable à découvrir.

Je n’ai jamais douté de sa culture ni de son amour des mots, déjà à l’époque où il était beaucoup plus médiatisé. Mais ici, il ne fait que confirmer l’image que je pouvais avoir de son tempérament et de sa manière de réfléchir.

Je ne connais évidemment pas l’homme personnellement, mais il dégage quelque chose de profondément charismatique dans cette lecture. Et surtout, au fil des pages, on ressent davantage l’homme avant le politicien.

Ce que j’ai particulièrement apprécié, c’est que l’on ne découvre pas uniquement son quotidien en détention. On découvre aussi ses réflexions, son regard sur ce qu’il traverse, sa manière d’analyser les événements et de s’accrocher à ce qui compte vraiment pour lui. Derrière le personnage public, il y a des doutes, des émotions, des souvenirs et une profonde attache à ses proches.

Au final, j’ai refermé ce livre avec le même sentiment que celui qui m’a accompagnée tout au long de ma lecture : celui d’avoir découvert un témoignage humain avant tout. Que l’on partage ou non ses opinions, ce n’est pas ce qui a guidé mon intérêt ici. J’y ai trouvé une plume cultivée, une réflexion sincère et un récit qui m’a bien plus captivée que je ne l’aurais imaginé.

Une lecture humaine, réfléchie et étonnamment accessible, qui m’a bien plus marquée que ce à quoi je m’attendais.

Avant même de parler politique, je préfère préciser une chose : je ne fais pas de politique. Ce n’est pas ce qui m’intéresse dans cette lecture.

Ce que j’aime avant tout, ce sont les mots, la culture, les réflexions qu’un livre peut transmettre… et honnêtement, il faut reconnaître une chose à Nicolas Sarkozy : il sait parler.

Malheureusement, mon application de lecture a complètement buggué et j’ai perdu toutes les phrases que j’avais surlignées… ce qui me frustre énormément, parce qu’il y avait beaucoup de passages que j’avais réellement envie de garder et de vous partager.

Mais justement, si j’ai pris le temps de souligner autant de citations, c’est bien que cette lecture m’a marquée d’une certaine manière.

Dans ce livre, il parle de l’injustice qu’il estime avoir vécue, mais aussi de la prison en elle-même : la difficulté d’adaptation, l’envers du décor, le quotidien carcéral, le personnel pénitentiaire, et surtout ce retour brutal à une autre réalité.

Au-delà de l’image publique, on découvre aussi un homme qui parle de sa famille, de ses proches, et de la force que l’amour peut apporter dans des moments particulièrement difficiles.

Et c’est probablement ce qui m’a le plus intéressée dans cette lecture : cette part plus humaine, plus intime, loin des simples débats politiques.

Honnêtement, j’ai énormément apprécié cette lecture. Je ne m’attendais absolument pas à aimer autant.

J’avais une certaine appréhension avant de commencer, notamment par peur d’une lecture compliquée, avec un vocabulaire trop lourd ou trop politique… mais pas du tout.

What We Can All Learn From the Courage of Charter 77

The wonderful Czech writer Ivan Klima died this past weekend at the age of 94. Klima lived a remarkable, principled life, having survived both the Nazi occupation of Prague (he spent three years in the concentration camp at Terezin as a boy), and the post-1968 repression of the Soviet regime.

Unlike his more famous literary compatriots, Milan Kundera and Josef Skvorecky, Klima stuck around in Czechoslovakia, despite being forbidden from publishing for 20 years. For two decades Klima was consigned primarily to menial work, as a street sweeper, bricklayer, orderly… But he kept writing. And he kept resisting, through the publication of literary samizdat (his own and others), organizing clandestine salons, and helping to disseminate Charter 77, an artists’ manifesto named for the year it was written.

The main authors behind Charter 77—Václav Havel, Jan Patočka, and Pavel Kohout, who were responding to the Communist government’s crackdown on free expression—generated its moral (and to some extent legal) authority by citing two UN human rights covenants signed by the Czechoslovak government in 1968, in the lead up to the so-called Prague Spring. [Spoiler: the Russians didn’t approve, sent tanks into Prague, and crushed any hope of a freer society].

The Communist regime quickly made it a crime to distribute copies of Charter 77, calling it “an anti-state, anti-socialist, and demagogic, abusive piece of writing,” and deeming its signatories to be “traitors and renegades” and “agents of imperialism.” As for how they saw themselves, the organizers behind Charter 77 were very clear about being nothing more than an ad hoc confederation of likeminded people, and certainly not an opposition party. In their own words, they were a “loose, informal, and open association of people . . . united by the will to strive individually and collectively for respect for human and civil rights in our country and throughout the world.” (So, more of a shared set of beliefs than a formal organization, like, you know, antifa.)

Why is a 50-year-old writers’ manifesto worth thinking about now? First of all, the aforementioned human rights covenants, cited at length in the charter, map neatly over what we still like to think of as western democratic ideals of free expression and individual liberty. And just as Charter 77 decries the state crack-down on those ideals in 1970s Czechoslovakia, we too can cite many and obvious authoritarian crimes from the Trump administration circa 2025.

From government officials menacing late-night comedians to masked thugs landing helicopters on apartment buildings, from Democratic officials threatened with jail time by the president to the brazen flouting of the rule of law, America’s decades-long drift into authoritarianism has sped up dramatically in the last nine months. We are in the middle of an anti-democratic sea-change, and as each week passes the likes of Stephen Miller grow bolder in flouting their fascist inclinations.

But it’s never too late to fight for basic human freedoms, for the right to be who you are and to say what you want, the right to not go hungry or get shot at school or lose everything because you get sick. Luckily, Charter 77—which is but one of countless historical examples of courage in the face of tyranny—offers a clear blueprint for how we might respond to the Trump administration’s attacks on free expression and the rule of law:

With regard to the targeting of pro-Palestinian ideas on college campuses:

The right to freedom of expression, for example, guaranteed by Article 19 of the first-mentioned covenant, is in our case purely illusory. Tens of thousands of our citizens are prevented from working in their own fields for the sole reason that they hold views differing from official ones, and are discriminated against and harassed in all kinds of ways by the authorities and public organizations.
