🇬🇧 Gave away magazines and other books at Lisa (Caritas) and went away with this pile of CDs and among them 4 Reader’s digest boxes with 4-5 CDs originally packed and 10 LPs, all this for 7 EUR. Hours of listening and pleasure ahead and this for a caritative goal. 😁

  2. VARIOUS ARTISTS
Cut Me Deep (A Story Of Indie Pop 1985-1989)
    2024 UK 4xCD Box Set

THIS was something I just couldn’t pass up.

There were just too many amazing artists and too many great songs to not buy it.

Each CD has over 70 mins. of music on it, and it’s the kind of thing where you can just pick ANY of the four, let it play from the beginning, and be completely happy.
It really is an embarrassment of #80s indie pop riches.

I’ll let you read the tracklist on your own to see what I’m talking about.

This might be my favorite thing I’ve bought all year.
Which is wild, because it’s CDs!

  4. My coolest, outdated retro device—The Sony D-E01 CD Walkman

One of the coolest, outdated devices that I am lucky to own is the late 20th century Sony D-E01 CD Walkman.

This was the pinnacle of portable compact disc (CD) player technology. Rather than use a buffered skip protection, it used “G-Protection” or a gyroscopic vibration, which was essentially “skip-free” for all normal usages including running, walking, etc...

Note: if you’re on Mastodon click-through for video and more pictures.

The skip-free functionality came at a cost requiring slide-in loading, rare at the time for single disc players. The disadvantage of slide-in is that it cannot play CD...

  6. Record store names worth replaying

    Source: vinyltapnashville.com

Who doesn’t love a great record store? For those who were born after digital music swept the industry, you may not understand the aura of authenticity found in a great independent record store. Forget the boring chains, often once found in malls. A great record shop was/is the gateway to sonic bliss; to head-banging enjoyment; or to new sounds, bands, and artists.

“If you ever get lonely just go to the record store and visit your friends.”

    Penny Lane, Almost Famous

    (found on the vinyltapnashville.com website)

Just like independent bookstores, record shops are a bonafide third place where music lovers of all ages can meetup, talk, and jam to the sounds of the era. No digital realm can ever begin to replace the atmosphere found in a record store. There little to nothing genuine about digital formats as they lack the album covers, liner notes, printed lyrics, and other tangible features one experiences with a vinyl album or compact disc.

Listed below are my favorite names for actual records stores located across the country both already known personally or by searching via google.com. Those shown in bold are the top picks. Common terms in these names include vinyl, record, disc, groove, ear, sound, spin, and wax. The list does not rank them on the quality of their service, but solely based on the name of the business. One is not surprised to find many of these located in college towns.

Personally, I really appreciate names that are catchy, unique, and include a bit of fun wordplay. If you know of any other great record store names, please feel free to pass them along.

    Peace!

  11. I have some music CDs still in their original packaging, where I also have the same album already as a digital download (e.g. from Bandcamp). I don't need to open the CD case to listen on my computer, but obviously I'd need to open it to listen on one of my CD players (which I use often to avoid the internet of distraction).

Should I open the CD cases?

  24. Music prices in late 1980's

    #Records $7.99 - $12.99/Budget $4.99 - $9.99
    #Cassettes $6.99 - $9.99/Budget $3.99 - $5.99
    #CompactDiscs $14.99 - $18.99/Budget $7.99 - $11.99

Considering the inflation over the years, prices should be still accessible to consumers, especially the cassette and singles.
That's the reason why I don't accept today's prices. So absurd.

Single records prices in late 1980's:
    • 7" vinyl 45rpm $1.99 - $3.99/Budget $0.99 - $1.99
    • Cassette Single $1.99 - $3.99/Budget $0.99 - $2.99

And in late 1990's prices were inflated: had the same cost as an full-length album.

The the records companies complained about piracy. Seriously that's so ironic.

Seen from an artist at their site today:
    • Vinyl record: $39.99 - $49.99
    • Cassette: $34.99
    • Compact Disc: $ 16.99 - $19.99

The problem today: not only the prices are ridiculously high, but they are uneven.

Prices of the records in my country today:
    • Vinyl record: $84.99 and up
    • Cassette: $37.99 and up
    • Compact Disc: $37.99 approximately

That's a big insult to the music lover.

  25. MUSIC LOVERS IN THE 1980'S AND 1990'S

    * Buy a vinyl record, compact disc or cassette according their preferences.

There were a discussion at that time: compact disc sounds better than vinyl.

Sometimes choose because of money condition: some prefers cassettes since they were cheaper and still sounds great in the deck players.

    * Buy a full length album or buy a single: a 7" vinyl, a 8cm. Mini-CD or a cassette single.

Happened that maybe an artist or band was not the piece of cake for a listener but one song was the best song and decided to have the single. Example: a friend used to hate Heavy Metal a lot, but liked Cinderella's "Nobody's Fool" in a 7" vinyl single and Guns N Roses' "Patience" in cassette single.

Singles were so cheap at that time: an underage school student could save the money in one or two weeks, then go to a record store and buy a single record.

This is the reason why I never understand today: cassettes costs more than a vinyl, a remastered vinyl costs more than an original vinyl, singles costs the same as an full length album, etc. And all those items are now a sample of a collector's STATUS and not a matter of passion.

The the music industry complains that there are so much piracy over the Internet. Ironic...

    That's my unpopular opinion.
