  6. This is very cool.

I know nothing about Spirit Airlines, but I'm wondering if this could serve as a template for how to very quickly get the idea of community ownership into public discussion when community assets of any scale shut down.

Non-binding pledges, but informative and quite detailed - could help with the rapid response that is often required with these things.

  7. #Solarpunk: A Deep Dive into the Cultural Revolution #Reimagining Our Future

The Philosophy Behind the Movement: More Than Just #SolarPanels

Solarpunk represents not just an aesthetic or literary movement, but a comprehensive framework for reimagining human civilization. Its strength lies in combining practical technical solutions with radical social and cultural innovation, while remaining grounded in ecological reality and human needs. As we face cascading environmental and social crises, Solarpunk offers not just hope, but a practical pathway forward that is both revolutionary and achievable.

Excerpts: "While mainstream coverage often focuses on Solarpunk’s aesthetic elements, the movement represents a fundamental reimagining of human civilization’s relationship with technology, nature, and itself. At its core, Solarpunk challenges the dominant narratives of both techno-optimism and eco-pessimism, proposing instead a radical middle path that embraces both technological advancement and ecological wisdom.

    #Decolonial Roots and #Indigenous Influence

"Often overlooked in basic Solarpunk discussions is the movement’s deep connection to #IndigenousKnowledge systems and decolonial thinking. Many Solarpunk principles mirror traditional ecological practices:

    - The concept of “#SeventhGeneration” decision-making from #Haudenosaunee philosophy
    - #AustralianAboriginal practices of landscape management and fire ecology
    - #Andean concepts of “#BuenVivir” (good living) that emphasize harmony between human communities and natural systems
    - Traditional #Asian #agricultural practices that create #ClosedLoop systems

    The Political Economy of Solarpunk
    Beyond #GreenCapitalism

"Solarpunk explicitly rejects the notion that market forces alone can address environmental challenges. Instead, it proposes alternative economic models:

    - Commons-based peer production
    - Gift economies for local exchange
    - Circular economic systems that eliminate waste
    - Democratic ownership of key infrastructure
    - Time banking and alternative currencies
    - #Degrowth economics in overdeveloped regions
    #TechnologicalSovereignty

"Unlike techno-utopian visions that centralize control in #corporate hands, Solarpunk advocates for:

    - #OpenSource technology development
    - #CommunityOwned and maintained infrastructure
    - Appropriate technology scaled to local needs
    - #RightToRepair and modify equipment

  12. So, I caught a glimpse of #EcoMaine's new recycling facility, which has been completed. The new imaging technology will help separate recyclables even faster and more efficiently! Pretty cool stuff!

    #Ecomaine plans $25 million #recycling center upgrade

    #MainePublic | By Peter McGuire
    Published September 9, 2024

"One of Maine’s largest recyclers is planning a multi-million dollar upgrade of its Portland plant in anticipation of handling more cardboard and other household waste.

"Ecomaine, a #CommunityOwned corporation, plans to spend up to $25.2 million on state-of-the-art sorting equipment at a new recycling plant near its Portland headquarters.

"CEO Kevin Roche said the new automated sorting machines use #ImagingTechnology to separate mixed recycling such as paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and aluminum.

"The equipment will replace the company's current machines, installed around 2006.

"Back then, newsprint made up most of the recycling ecomaine handled, according to Roche. With a boom in online shopping and home delivery, however, cardboard has become the top material it handles.

" 'Paper packing has really taken over the recycling bin, so we need a new design and plus the new system is nearly 20 years old,' Roche said.

"The market for recyclables has rebounded from a slump after China stopped accepting most U.S. solid waste about seven years ago.

"American companies retrofitted mills to process used cardboard into more packaging material, boosting domestic demand, Roche said.

"But local policy is also likely to increase the amount of material ecomaine handles, he added.

"Maine regulators are finalizing requirements that producers pay for the cost of disposing #packaging waste. The extended producer responsibility program would reimburse towns and cities for their recycling programs.

"With that policy in place, Roche said that more communities will likely expand programs or revive abandoned recycling rather than 'leave money on the table.'

" 'So that in concert with public outcry for more recycling and more recovery, those two things are going to go hand in hand and I think, expand recycling programs,' Roche said.

"The company hopes its expansion will allow it to add more member communities that own and send waste to the Portland facility.

"Ecomaine plans to borrow $35.5 million through a bond issue for the recycling upgrade and a landfill expansion. Adding more landfill space will give the company seven more years to store ash from its waste-to-energy [#WTE] plant, according to the company.

"The public corporation is owned by a collection of towns and cities in southern Maine. It serves about 73 communities statewide."

The Isle of #Eigg: The #communityowned island that powers itself

    By Hugh Tucker
    31st October 2023

"Eigg is one of a collection of islands in the Scottish Inner Hebrides called the Small Isles. It lies 15 miles from the mainland and is reliant on a ferry that runs a few times a week, weather dependent, for supplies and transport. As such, waste isn't an option here and #sustainability is a necessity.

"'Sustainability has always been a part of island and crofting life here,' explained Norah Barnes, Scottish Wildlife Trust ranger on Eigg. 'You're a bit more aware of what you're using. You can't just go to a shop down the road to get something. Everything that we want, we literally have to lift off the boat.'

"Combined, the Small Isles of Eigg, #Canna, #Sanday, #Rùm and #Muck have a population of just 150-200 people. Measuring five miles by three, Eigg is the second largest in size but by far the most populous with around 110 residents, and this has helped to foster a community that has collectively been able to take charge of the future of the island.

"Launched in 2008, Eigg was the world's first community to launch an #offgrid electric system powered by #wind, #water and #solar. The three systems complement each other so that almost any #weather condition is conducive to producing electricity. To ensure supply, there are still backup generators, but the overwhelming majority comes from #renewable sources. 'How much #renewables we use varies depending on the weather, but we've done as much as 90%,' Fyffe explained.

"The benefits of the new renewable system have been numerous. Before, the island was reliant on diesel generators, which Barnes explained was a logistical headache. 'You had to get the diesel shipped over, decant it into barrels, get the barrels to your house and fill up your generator. It was a massive job. Using renewable energy has improved things a lot for people's daily lives as well as the environment.'

"It's also a step towards self-sufficiency, and, with the global energy crisis pushing prices up around the world, Fyffe described how it's helped protect the island from the increased cost of living. 'To begin with, our unit charge was higher than the mainland, but we're probably cheaper now. We put it up slightly from time to time, but we haven't done this the last couple of years as it's been so tough for everyone.'

"The island isn't resting on its laurels. Eigg is continuing to work towards becoming more sustainable. 'We're involved with another feasibility study looking at how we could become #CarbonNeutral,' Fyffe said. 'We're hoping to build a house and renovate the old doctor's surgery for rent, and we're going to trial air source heat pumps [running off the electricity grid] to see how efficient they are. Then, people can move in that direction. We'd need more supply for this, probably three big turbines, although this is early days.'"

  17. There hasn’t been any grocers in this town of 28,000 people for 15 years. Now a group of locals wants to change that by opening a community-owned greengrocers.

Working with local growers and food producers, it will create a permanent outlet where people can buy local food. Veg will be loose and they’ll stock local and heritage varieties.

Chris Dobbs is one of the suppliers they've lined up: “Over the years we’ve lost the connection between our local farms and our local households, but Carrick Greengrocers is going to tie those back together and get fresh food from farms into people’s homes. Being so close, I can get vegetables off the farm and into the grocers in 10 minutes.”

The project is giving people a chance to become co-owners and raising funds to open the business by June with community shares. If successful, it would be the first community-owned business in Carrickfergus, and the first community-owned greengrocers in Northern Ireland.

Find out more about their story here: carrickgreengrocers.org/ and watch their sweet video here: vimeo.com/822473545
