@forresttanaka The corrupt pseudo-#science fabricated by #AndrewWakefield and promulgated by #RFKjr undoubtedly killed tens of thousands of #Americans. But none of the adults who died following the advice of #antivaxxers had a lick of #CommonSense.
#EvolutionIsTrue 🧬, stupidity is lethal.

An article about Brian Deer’s investigation into Andrew Wakefield’s claim that the MMR vaccine caused autism. Included were his discoveries that Wakefield had not disclosed that:
* he was paid £435,000 from lawyers suing vaccine manufacturers
* he had patented plans for a rival vaccine (this vaccine never amounted to anything)
* he had recruited of children through litigation networks
* he had misrepresented clinical timelines in patient recordsI do wonder how many tens of thousands of people Wakefield has killed.

checking the creators of facts
The whole Idea of facts is a slippery one. There are simple facts such as how long a river is, and specialised facts such as the enzymes and genes involved in plants detecting oxygen levels.
Specialised facts get reported in scientific journals after the papers have been checked by a couple of independent experts (in the good quality journals).
Unfortunately some papers that are fraudulent or incorrect sneek through this process. In many areas of science this can lead to others in the field wasting their time replicating this work. In medical fields the impacts can be more serious. These can lead inappropriate treatments. In the case of Andrew Wakefield who falsely reported a connection between the MMR vaccine and autism, a massive resistance to getting children was precipitated. This has continuing consequences with many children and young adults who were not vaccinated suffering measles infections.
Fraudulent papers in medical journals has been a particular problem for a while. This seems to be linked to authors creating papers for vanity or to get publications for career progression.
A paper that is unsatisfactory, for whatever reason, is retracted by the journal that published it. This formally removes it from the body of scientific publications.
The Retraction Watch organisation keeps a record of retractions and sometimes provides evidence of suspicious papers to journals.

#Bing chat doesn't seem to be artificial "intelligence" it's a bad search engine wrapped in an idiot
i thought it might work better than #Google to find whether #AndrewWakefield could still be called Dr from a #PhD … it was worse…

@ben_crowell_fullerton it’s shameful how the bad science around #Thimerosal was politicized. It’s still a factor 25 years later. I personally argued with #AndrewWakefield once. I had California data he was misconstruing and he threatened to sue me over releasing it. Horrible human being.
It was also an eye opener that the Hasidic community in New York were a hotbed of vaccine denial.

Remember Andrew Wakefield and his retracted study that the MMR vaccine can cause autism? Brian Deer, the journalist who exposed it has now written a book on it. Here's a review.
"In 'The Doctor Who Fooled the World', Deer recounts in vivid detail how he came to learn that Wakefield and his study were not what they appeared to be."
