    Thank you for the follow!

I wouldn't mind a more advanced search engine indexing posts on the fediverse.

Tootfinder is one way but let's hope an even more advanced way is found!

Edit: I moved HolosDiscover hashtag to the front! :)

  2. @phildini Depending on your definition of “modern”. I think what we're seeing is #enshittification, and that would have happend with or without ZIRP (for those listeners just joining us, that’s Zero Interest Rate Policy, at least I assume). I think non-free open-source software is prone to that, but that's exactly why the #GPL and #AfferoGPL exist and predate the open-source definition, and that's why I also prefer those for my own projects. YMMV, so don’t start any religious wars over it.

The () with its requirement that any network service using licensed software must offer, to the same network user, the to modify and build and redistribute the same software

is so much more needed now. Demand the that any network service must be anyone can fork as needed, end their artificial monopolies of our online lives.

  4. My Apologies and thanks are due to the OP of the rabbit hole that led me here, their username got lost in a fog of FUD and Corporate apologia.

but this was the escape hatch I was looking for, thanks.

  5. Translation into English:
    > Today, December 28, Google has announced that it is dividing itself into hundreds of user-owned non-profit consumer #cooperatives, passing all its software to #AfferoGPL, abandoning the use of #surveillance profiles and creating a fund to restore the #damages caused.

    > Welcome googlcoops to technoethics and the solidarity economy!

    One can dream! :)

    Thanks for the recommendation, Jeff!

I had not heard of Heather Meeker's Open (Source) for Business, 2020 book (third edition), until you just recommended it. I've just ordered myself a copy.

Thank you for the recommendation to read Lawrence Rosen's "Open Source Licensing: Software Freedom and Intellectual Property Law", July 2004. It was very informative, and clarified a lot of issues for me around licensing, patents, trademarks, copyright, and contract law.

Because it was published in 2004, it only describes the GPLv2 and not the GPLv3 and does not include the AGPL. The strongest open source license in the book appears to be Rosen's own OSL (Open Source License) because of its broader focus not limited to "programs" or "files" as the GPL and MPL do.

Do you have any recommendations for a book to read that includes the newer open source reciprocal licenses and the more modern open source licensing landscape? I am hoping to compare the AGPL and the OSL and possibly newer reciprocal licenses, or understand newer arguments for/against reciprocal agreements.

    Thanks again!

  17. Are there software licenses out there that guarantee to the user the ability to receive updates and improvements to a piece of open source software?

I don't know of any license other than the GPL that provides this guarantee to the user.

I know that I'm more motivated to learn a new tool when it is protected by the GPL because of this guarantee that future versions will also be open source.

When I license my own software, I choose the Affero GPLv3 because it provides this extra guarantee to the users, even if the software serving the user is on a webserver.

  22. @Rairii @atomicpoet “This AGPLv3 license applies to the entirety of the work and all its parts. This license grants no permission to license this work in any other way.” Sounds like they didn’t even read the license! #AfferoGPL #gpl

  23. Tooter.in is just copying #Free
Software and shamelessly calling it 'Made in #India'. It is made by people from around the world and shared freely.

Either they did not write even a single line or they are violating the #AfferoGPL #copyright license, which requires them to publish their changes. They are linking to original code in #gab project repos (which is a fork of #mastodon).

Even the terms of service is just copied with references to first amendment in the USA.
