Last weeks, crawling was badly configured and the index was very behind. It is fixed now.
Just learned about #tootfinder. An opt-in search engine for #Mastodon posts. Very interesting, I've just opted in.

Die frühesten Suchergebnisse beginnen im Juni und dann werden nur Posts von 3 Monaten gespeichert.
Now I get it, the reason why I do not find my or others' recent toots on tootfinder.ch - the index is 65090 minutes, that is ~45 days, behind [as displayed on its search page]! And I also didn't know this: "makes them searchable for 3 months"
I will opt out of this, almost no usecase whatsoever. #tootfinder #tfr
It's been 0 Days since the Mastodon search capability has disappointed me.
I've had "Include public posts in search results" turned on for months now, but at least on my instance, it doesn't seem to find anything more than two days old. To verify, I've tried several words that are in toots from 3 to 14 days old, and none of them hit.
#Tootfinder appears to be down at the moment, but only covers ~3 months IIRC.
I think it is time to think about some institutional support for #tootfinder
It only holds toots for 3 month, Which is not enough. We need a good general crawler and a long term archive.
Any foundation out there with some resources left?

I just encountered a time consuming process on 🦣: a paper I boosted got published and I was hoping to replied to you original booted post so make the information continuous...it took me 30 mins to find the post only becus I had an earlier reply that contain images so I can retrieve from my media tool in #tusky, I had tried #tootfinder and #justmytoots neither of it helped me....and unfortunately my instance cannot afford #elasticsearch.😞
@Natanox @jonny Built-in #Mastodon #search is intra-site ("local"), #TootFinder is inter-site ("global", kind of like #Google for the #Fediverse , not just for your instance).
I.e., you don't need to remeber the user/instance where you read the post from…
Also, consider allowing #TootFinder to make your public posts globally searchable. I think it is a good thing to do, if you want to make information available to the public.
It's painless:
1️⃣ Include one of the keywords "searchable", " tootfinder", or "tfr" in your profile to express consent
2️⃣ Tell TootFinder to start indexing here: https://tootfinder.ch/join.php
(Just remove the keyword if you want to opt out again.)
Hi @buercher. Now that #Mastodon 4.2 includes the option to "Include Public Posts In Search results" right in the user config, are you planning to use the *indexable* flag for #TootFinder, instead of relying on tags in the profile description? #FullTextSearch #Fulltext #Search

There are a few other instances where I talked about World Chase Tag but just used the hashtag. If #Tootfinder is just exact text search, they may not show up.

Geht recht easy, hilft mir, vlt auch anderen, denn die #Crossover #Suchfunktion ist bei #Mastodon ausbaufähig.

I think opt-in search is great. I have signed up for @buercher's #TootFinder, but few people have. What if something like that was the default search in the UI, and people were encouraged opt-in when they signed up?

Es gibt etwas namens #tootfinder, das helfen soll, zumindest die eigenen Trööts durchsuchbar zu machen; ich habe allerdings noch nicht ausprobiert, etwas zu suchen, und weiß deshalb nicht, ob es eine wirkliche Hilfe ist.

Even though (a) my profile is visible to Tootfinder, and (b) I post relatively frequently about World Chase Tag, a Tootfinder search for World Chase Tag never finds anything. Anyone know why?

Gestern #Tootfinder (mit Einfügen meines Accountnamens) aktiviert. Ein wirkliches (gewolltes) Manko hier ist die #Volltextsuche. Ohne die Möglichkeit einer vernünftigen Suche, ist der gezielte Zugriff auf Wissen, Strategien, Inhalte fast unmöglich , Vernetzung wird erschwert. (Und ja ich kenne Hashtags).

What would have been the expected way of notifying those who expect to be notified about the introduction of search?
People in other spaces, particularly Discord servers that I'm in, have expressed surprise at the existence of harassment through search. Where can I read more about other people's lived experiences of harassment through search?
As for opt-in, there's an opportunity for people to maliciously comply: "Because nobody else who has opted into #tootfinder has expressed this connection between concepts, I can conclude I'm probably the first person to think of it."

It's an **OPT-IN** search index. Once you follow the steps there, your toots will be searchable in trunks as well.
NOTE: Global post search is not available on web for the time being.

If such policies can be established then other search engines could follow.
