I don't post a lot of original content, especially around this time of year, because the #holidays hate me and I feel it way too much. Sorry. I hope you're doing better than I am. If I star or boost your toots, please consider it the best I can do in lieu of a rousing cheer of enthusiastic applause. #Seasonal #Affective #Depression

Key points :
1. To examine the influence of #news source bias on #affective content and #virality over time, we applied #sentiment analysis to a large #socialmedia dataset over a decade (i.e., ~ 30 M twitter posts from 2011-2020).
2. Biased news sources on both sides produced more arousing negative affective content, and this content was also most viral.
3. Biased news sources may generate " #AffectivePollution ”, engaging users at the expense of their knowledge, well-being, and harmony. (2/3) -
Key points from "News source bias and sentiment on social media" :
1. To examine the influence of #news source bias on #affective content and #virality over time, we applied #sentiment analysis to a large social #media dataset over a decade (i.e., ~ 30 million twitter posts from 2011-2020).
2. Biased news sources on both sides produced more high arousal negative affective content, and this content was also most viral.
3. The virality of high arousal negative content increased over a decade, particularly for balanced news sources.
4. Biased news sources may generate " #AffectivePollution ” which engages users at the expense of their knowledge, well-being, and harmony. (2/3) -

"While our results are affirmative, such prediction does not indicate causality, as many individuals with PLE & related symptoms do not hold racist attitudes. However, this cognitive-affective style may result in individuals who display only when their socialization experiences included sufficient exposure to anti-Black sentiments. Thus, the proposed constellation of #cognitive & #affective characteristics may be necessary, but not sufficient, to result in individuals who display NRA.” -
Today's #Lent Without Borders newsletter features Rwandan doctor Dr Evrard Nahimana and he focuses his #reflection on solidarity in #healthcare:
"I strongly believe that solidarity rather than charity is the antidote to despair..."
Puts #solidarity in a new light and spins it into the realm of #affective responses / mitigation of negative feels. We can expand to #climate #anxiety, #political #despair, overwhelm etc.

We’re invited by #Mastodon to headline our publications with a #contentwarning. Is it useful? According to this #research (https://osf.io/qav9m/), no : “warnings have no effect on #affective responses to negative material nor on educational outcomes (i.e., comprehension)”. Moreover, warnings have no effect on #engagement with material, and may even increase engagement with negative material. #triggerwarning s are thus useless. They are a veil of righteousness with no real helpfulness.

Hi #ScienceMastodon! I'm a neuroscience PhD working in science administration. During my PhD, I studied emotion and decision-making in patients with chronic focal brain damage and those undergoing surgery for epilepsy.
After my PhD I completed the AAAS Science and Technology Policy fellowship and made the jump from bench to science policy. These days I'm involved in #cognitive and #affective #neuroscience as it relates to #aging and #Alzheimers.
