"San Diego mosque shooting highlights new generation of neo-Nazi accelerationism

Key Findings

• The San Diego mosque shooting was an ideologically motivated act of neo-Nazi accelerationist violence, but the attackers’ pathways into that violence were more diffuse than their target selection and manifestos alone indicate. While white supremacy was their primary motivator, their broader online footprints also reflected influences from nihilistic online subcultures.

• The attack is indicative of a broader pattern in which ideological extremism increasingly intersects with nihilistic violent subcultures. Across a growing number of cases, perpetrators have blended ideological elements with less linear online pathways influenced by mass shooter fixations, misogynistic grievances, obscure fandoms and/or transgressive online aesthetics.

• The case highlights an emerging fracture within the accelerationist landscape. While younger actors outside legacy accelerationist networks continue to borrow from traditional white supremacist ideology and attacker mythology, established networks often dismiss them as unserious, undisciplined, or ideologically confused. This dynamic suggests that accelerationist violence is becoming more fragmented and less subject to control by legacy extremist communities."

In August 2024, ASIO, the national security agency of Australia, raised its terrorism threat level from ‘possible’ to ‘probable’. When asked what threats the agency had in mind, ASIO’s director-general Mike Burgess listed off the usual suspects: far-Right extremists and Islamic jihadists. But he also added a new candidate: ‘accelerationists’. When the perplexed interviewer enquired ‘What’s an accelerationist?’ Burgess responded: ‘It’s people with a far-Right ideology, neo-Nazi or even further, where they believe in white supremacy and they don’t like the way the world is run today and they want it to downfall to return things to what they believe is the rightful order.’

So, what is ‘accelerationism’? In the past decade, two forms seem to have consolidated in the public imagination. The first evokes violent terrorists like Tarrant. The second involves titans of the tech industry striving to build a ‘pro-human’ science-fiction utopia. But neither reflects the original and much stranger philosophy of accelerationism, which began neither as an ideology of white nationalism nor of techno-utopianism.

It began with one man’s ecstatic philosophy of human extinction.

In the early 2020s, those doomscrolling on Twitter (now X) might have observed a number of prominent Silicon Valley tech bros – including Marc Andreessen, the co-founder of the first widely used web browser, and Garry Tan, an early employee of Palantir Technologies – identifying as ‘effective accelerationists’, abbreviated as ‘e/acc’.

Coined in 2022 by two pseudonymous Twitter users (named ‘Beff Jezos’ and ‘Bayeslord’), effective accelerationism treads a very different path to the one described by the Christchurch shooter: it espouses a radical version of tech solutionism in which the optimal way to solve any problem is through the technological innovations that emerge from capitalist competition. There is no natural or technological problem, as Andreessen writes in ‘The Techno-Optimist Manifesto’ (2023), ‘that cannot be solved with more technology.’ For effective accelerationists, techno-capitalism – even the most inhuman, AI-driven version of it – only improves our lives. Global problems like poverty, war and climate change can all be fixed by ramping up unrestricted market competition.

Even the notion of a noumenon – a thing as it actually is (independently of us) – is not really a positive cognition so much as a negative abstraction emptied of all sensible forms, conceptual categories and imaginative schemata. Can we ever experience a landscape as it really is, beyond our limited senses, concepts and imagination? At most, the notion of the noumenon demarcates something beyond which we can neither sense, nor think, nor imagine."

Creating distrust, division, confusion, and chaos, leading to massive societal dysfunction and collapse, is not a bug in the #MAGA plan due to incompetence in personnel picks and #policy: it’s a very deliberate design feature, and it will have dire global #consequences.

And for #accelerationists, #evangelicals, #fundamentalists, and #Christian nationalists, it’s all a part of the big plan for the End Times.

Alexander Lightner, tapping away on his Samsung Galaxy, announced his intention to commit 💥mass murder,💥 according to federal court records.

He used the coded language of a new breed of neo-Nazis who call themselves #Accelerationists.

Lightner wrote that he planned to become a “#saint”
— the term followers use for someone who advances their racist cause through lethal acts of terror
— and to set a new “#Highscore,” or death toll.

Lightner launched what federal prosecutors allege were threats on #Telegram, the sprawling, no-holds-barred platform that has become a hive for the movement.

🔥Accelerationists aim to speed the collapse of modern civilization and create a white ethno-state from the ashes of today’s democracies.

Deep in the chatter of the platform’s roughly 900 million users, these extremists have created a constellation of Telegram channels where they encourage followers like Lightner to
assassinate political leaders,
sabotage power stations and railways,
and commit mass murder.

A week after firing off his alleged threats on Telegram, Lightner woke up from a nap at his home to his father’s shouts:
“Whoa, whoa, whoa. What’s this? Are these people here for us?”

Lightner threw an illegal, homemade silencer into a laundry basket,
according to a summary of his interview with federal agents.

Then he stepped into the sunlight.

In his front yard, agents in camouflage and body armor pointed rifles at him.

An armored vehicle faced his family home, its massive battering ram aimed at the front door.

An FBI agent asked Lightner if he knew why federal agents were at his door.

Lightner answered simply: “Telegram,” according to court records
