There’s a phrase I like to use: “Today will involve the slowest rate of change for the rest of your life!”

That concept seems quaint in the era of fast-moving AI. In fact, we should rephrase it: “By the time you finish reading this sentence, the state-of-the-art has already moved on.”

Think back to 2024. We were impressed by a chatbot that could summarize a PDF. For those of us of a technical bent, we thought a 128k ‘context window’ was a “breakthrough.” In retrospect, that was the screeching, static-filled noise of the 56k modem era. We were in the AOL-era of AI!

Today? Welcome to the broadband era of intelligence.

In just the last 24 months, the landscape hasn’t just shifted. It’s undergone a seismic shift. The ground we knew below our feet has been pulverized and rebuilt. Think about just a few of the AI trends as we go into this new era:

The Memory Explosion: We’ve graduated from "summarizing a document" to "uploading the entire library." Leading models like Gemini now process millions of tokens at once, compared to the 128k context windows we were celebrating as breakthroughs just 18 months ago. We aren't just prompting; we’re giving AI an entire War & Peace document set to churn through.

The Price Collapse: Intelligence is now a commodity utility. The cost to run GPT-4-class reasoning has plummeted by 98%. What cost $60 is now essentially "too cheap to meter" at less than $0.75.

From "Chatting" to "Doing": 2024 was about talking to a screen. 2026 is about Agentic AI. We're moving past chatbots to autonomous agents that negotiate, navigate CRMs, and execute project workflows without being babysat.

The last few weeks have had me working with Claude Cowork and Claude Copilot, and my entire concept of AI has changed. I don’t just ask it questions — I now instruct it to go off and do the work on my behalf. That’s a subtle but important change, and once you wrap your head around what that change brings, your head explodes.

And I haven't even yet jumped into the world of Claw! It's on the list!

It is evident that not only is the power and capability of AI accelerating, but we are rapidly building a new operating system around it. If you are still "playing around" with prompts, you’re still waiting for the handshake signal on a dial-up connection. You're stuck with a modem connection when the rest of the world has installed fiber.

The bandwidth of possibility has expanded. The question isn't whether the tech is ready. The question is: Are you ready for the speed of the "Broadband" era, or are you still waiting for the page to load?

"One of the great hopes for artificial intelligence—at least, among workers—is that it will ease workloads, freeing people up for more high-level, creative pursuits. So far, the opposite is happening, new data show.

In fact, AI is increasing the speed, density and complexity of work rather than reducing it, according to an analysis of 164,000 workers’ digital work activity. The data, from workforce analytics and productivity-tracking software company ActivTrak, covers more than 443 million hours of work across 1,111 employers, making it one of the biggest studies of AI’s effects on work habits to date.

Examining AI users’ digital activity 180 days before and after they began using such tools on the job, ActivTrak found AI intensified activity across nearly every category: The time they spent on email, messaging and chat apps more than doubled, while their use of business-management tools, such as human-resources or accounting software, rose 94%.

Meanwhile, the amount of time AI users devoted to focused, uninterrupted work—the kind of concentration often required for figuring out complex problems, writing formulas, creating and strategizing—fell 9%, compared with nearly no change for nonusers.

“It’s not that AI doesn’t create efficiency,” said Gabriela Mauch, ActivTrak’s chief customer officer and head of its productivity lab. “It’s that the capacity it frees up immediately gets repurposed into doing other work, and that’s where the creep is likely to happen.”

Such habits aren’t exactly what AI evangelists have predicted. A number of tech and business leaders, from Bill Gates to JPMorgan Chase’s Jamie Dimon have suggested that AI could ultimately lead people to work less, not more, and result in a shorter workweek. Elon Musk has said that, within 20 years, advancements in AI and robots could even make work optional."

"Shift your mindset from why you can't to why you must!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

It was an honor to present at the recent BIFMA 360 Leadership Conference in St. Petersburg, where I took a hard look at the "era of acceleration" currently transforming the manufacturing industry.

From the rapid integration of AI and robotics to the emergence of "swarm factories," the message is clear: the future is coming at you faster than you think. How fast are things changing? Take a look at my slide deck - I share the full thing right here. I don't often share these, but I'm particularly proud of what I put together.

To encourage them to keep moving forward, I just shared a deep-dive summary, and a video recap that collectively outline the mindset required to survive—specifically, my mantra to "Think BIG, Start small, Scale fast!"

How did I encourage them to think about tomorrow? I told them about what things would look like in exactly 10 years!

The slides and article guide you through "Project Aura," a hypothetical 2035 scenario where we build a "phygital" workspace using digital twins and bio-responsive materials. These resources outline a 10-step roadmap—from "cognitive briefs" to "product-as-a-service"—illustrating how technologies such as generative AI and 3D printing are reshaping the entire manufacturing lifecycle.

I also filmed a summary YouTube video as a refresher of what I covered in the keynote. It brings these concepts to life with practical leadership strategies for today. In it, I discuss the importance of building an "Xbox Room" to allow young engineers to experiment with new tools and the necessity of hiring "rebels and misfits" to shake up the current skill set. The video serves as a passionate reminder that we are in a time where trends can go "supernova" and change an industry overnight.

Crucially, I warned them of the dangerous "barbell structure" forming in the industry - big companies are doing all these things, and small and medium-sized manufacturers are falling behind. I challenged these leaders to "kill the innovation killers" (the excuses that hold you back) while building the "experiential capital" necessary to avoid becoming the hollowed-out middle.

My key guidance was not to try to avoid what must be done - and to do that, they needed to shift their mindset from why they 'can't' to why they 'must!

Next week, I will be standing on stage in Toronto at the Canadian Automotive
Dealers Summit.

As I prepare that keynote, this quote is the central pillar of my message.

The automotive industry is currently navigating a series of high-speed "sideline" events: interest rate volatility, a turbulent EV transition and pullback, Tesla's essentially deciding to leave the market, and the arrival of aggressive new global competitors. In Canada, that also involves the looming arrival of more Chinese-built EVs, as well as fast-moving turmoil in the automotive manufacturing sector (with resultant brand destruction) due to tariffs.

It's easy for a dealer to feel injured, battered, and bruised by this pace of change!

But as I’ve learned personally over the last few months of my own physical recovery, the injury itself isn't the defining moment.

The defining moment is the velocity you choose once you decide to get back in the game.

What's happening in the auto world right now is a massive widening of the "Resilience Gap" - that's what I write about in my book Dancing in the Rain. Some are still sitting on the sidelines, waiting for the "old normal" to return.

And then there are the leaders who are engineering a new future right now.

They aren't just recovering; they are using the momentum of this current setback to a faster pivot toward software-defined vehicles, a faster adoption of hybrids in light of the EV pullback, new digital customer journeys, and hyper-efficient service models.

One group is frozen - the other is moving.

I'm in the latter camp. Yesterday, I went back to the gym for the first time since my spinal injury. It’s a literal manifestation of this principle. I wasn't going back to where I was; I was going back to build the strength required for what’s next.

The automotive industry is at the same crossroads. You can’t control the volatility that sidelined you, but you have absolute control over your recovery speed. In Toronto, we’re going to talk about how to stop looking at the rearview mirror of "what happened" and start focusing on the "velocity" of the next logical move.

Strength doesn't return in the absence of struggle—it returns the moment you decide to show up and accelerate.

You need to think the same way.

Get ready for the reality that the distance between ‘imagination’ and ‘reality’ is collapsing

We are on Day 25. We are one day away from the finish line!

Today, you need to think about speed, velocity, and acceleration.

Yes, I've covered a lot about the issue of speed (Day 1) and scale (Day 16). However, before we conclude this series, it is essential to understand the actual physics, science, and technology behind the phenomena unfolding in our exponential world.

Here's the core issue: for the vast majority of human history, the relationship between your imagination and the realization of what you could achieve was governed by the "friction" of the physical world. It took time to do things. If a civilization wanted to build a cathedral, it measured the project in centuries. If a pharmaceutical company sought to cure a disease, it measured the timeline in decades.

Time was the constant barrier to progress, something that was not easily broken. In that way, you could think of it as a tax levied on progress.,
In 2025, that tax was repealed.

We have entered the era of the "Collapse of Time."

The old "operating system" that has governed progress, where step B had to patiently wait for step A to finish before it could move forward, is being overwritten by an exponential new world in which many things happen all at once.

This is not just a theoretical idea - over the last 24 months, we have witnessed the compression of timelines across every sector.

Here's why.

If we look back at what happened over the last two years, with the arrival of AI and the maturing of many other trends, the issue of acceleration is everywhere.
