"Shift your mindset from why you can't to why you must!" - Futurist Jim Carroll
It was an honor to present at the recent BIFMA 360 Leadership Conference in St. Petersburg, where I took a hard look at the "era of acceleration" currently transforming the manufacturing industry.
From the rapid integration of AI and robotics to the emergence of "swarm factories," the message is clear: the future is coming at you faster than you think. How fast are things changing? Take a look at my slide deck - I share the full thing right here. I don't often share these, but I'm particularly proud of what I put together.
To encourage them to keep moving forward, I just shared a deep-dive summary, and a video recap that collectively outline the mindset required to survive—specifically, my mantra to "Think BIG, Start small, Scale fast!"
How did I encourage them to think about tomorrow? I told them about what things would look like in exactly 10 years!
The slides and article guide you through "Project Aura," a hypothetical 2035 scenario where we build a "phygital" workspace using digital twins and bio-responsive materials. These resources outline a 10-step roadmap—from "cognitive briefs" to "product-as-a-service"—illustrating how technologies such as generative AI and 3D printing are reshaping the entire manufacturing lifecycle.
I also filmed a summary YouTube video as a refresher of what I covered in the keynote. It brings these concepts to life with practical leadership strategies for today. In it, I discuss the importance of building an "Xbox Room" to allow young engineers to experiment with new tools and the necessity of hiring "rebels and misfits" to shake up the current skill set. The video serves as a passionate reminder that we are in a time where trends can go "supernova" and change an industry overnight.

Crucially, I warned them of the dangerous "barbell structure" forming in the industry - big companies are doing all these things, and small and medium-sized manufacturers are falling behind. I challenged these leaders to "kill the innovation killers" (the excuses that hold you back) while building the "experiential capital" necessary to avoid becoming the hollowed-out middle.
Overall?
My key guidance was not to try to avoid what must be done - and to do that, they needed to shift their mindset from why they 'can't' to why they 'must!

Next week, I will be standing on stage in Toronto at the Canadian Automotive
Dealers Summit.As I prepare that keynote, this quote is the central pillar of my message.
The automotive industry is currently navigating a series of high-speed "sideline" events: interest rate volatility, a turbulent EV transition and pullback, Tesla's essentially deciding to leave the market, and the arrival of aggressive new global competitors. In Canada, that also involves the looming arrival of more Chinese-built EVs, as well as fast-moving turmoil in the automotive manufacturing sector (with resultant brand destruction) due to tariffs.
It's easy for a dealer to feel injured, battered, and bruised by this pace of change!
But as I’ve learned personally over the last few months of my own physical recovery, the injury itself isn't the defining moment.
The defining moment is the velocity you choose once you decide to get back in the game.
What's happening in the auto world right now is a massive widening of the "Resilience Gap" - that's what I write about in my book Dancing in the Rain. Some are still sitting on the sidelines, waiting for the "old normal" to return.
And then there are the leaders who are engineering a new future right now.
They aren't just recovering; they are using the momentum of this current setback to a faster pivot toward software-defined vehicles, a faster adoption of hybrids in light of the EV pullback, new digital customer journeys, and hyper-efficient service models.
One group is frozen - the other is moving.
I'm in the latter camp. Yesterday, I went back to the gym for the first time since my spinal injury. It’s a literal manifestation of this principle. I wasn't going back to where I was; I was going back to build the strength required for what’s next.
The automotive industry is at the same crossroads. You can’t control the volatility that sidelined you, but you have absolute control over your recovery speed. In Toronto, we’re going to talk about how to stop looking at the rearview mirror of "what happened" and start focusing on the "velocity" of the next logical move.
Strength doesn't return in the absence of struggle—it returns the moment you decide to show up and accelerate.
You need to think the same way.

We are on Day 25. We are one day away from the finish line!
Today, you need to think about speed, velocity, and acceleration.
Yes, I've covered a lot about the issue of speed (Day 1) and scale (Day 16). However, before we conclude this series, it is essential to understand the actual physics, science, and technology behind the phenomena unfolding in our exponential world.
Here's the core issue: for the vast majority of human history, the relationship between your imagination and the realization of what you could achieve was governed by the "friction" of the physical world. It took time to do things. If a civilization wanted to build a cathedral, it measured the project in centuries. If a pharmaceutical company sought to cure a disease, it measured the timeline in decades.
Time was the constant barrier to progress, something that was not easily broken. In that way, you could think of it as a tax levied on progress.,
In 2025, that tax was repealed.We have entered the era of the "Collapse of Time."
The old "operating system" that has governed progress, where step B had to patiently wait for step A to finish before it could move forward, is being overwritten by an exponential new world in which many things happen all at once.
This is not just a theoretical idea - over the last 24 months, we have witnessed the compression of timelines across every sector.
Here's why.
If we look back at what happened over the last two years, with the arrival of AI and the maturing of many other trends, the issue of acceleration is everywhere.

When exponential change arrives, it never goes well.
That's because most people fail to understand what it means and don't act, which is a problem. After all, there is a remarkably narrow window between "this will never work" and "how did we miss this?"
We are on Day 16. Earlier in this series (go back to Day 2), we confronted the staggering velocity of change—the doubling of scientific knowledge, the acceleration of technological breakthroughs.
But there is a massive, invisible chasm we have not yet crossed:
It is the gap between intellectually knowing the numbers and viscerally comprehending what they mean for your reality in 36 months. It's called the scale-blindness epidemic, and why your brain cannot comprehend what is coming.
Consider this: you can read the reports on AI growth, computing power, or synthetic biology until your eyes bleed. You can nod your head and agree that things are moving fast.
But deep down, you don't believe it.
Why? Because you are a human being. We are linearly wired creatures living in an exponential world. Our brains evolved to track linear threats—a lion moving across the savannah at a constant speed. We understand “1, 2, 3, 4, 5.” Slow, linear growth.
But it seems we are biologically incapable of intuitively grasping “1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32.” Wildly fast exponential growth.
Because of this evolutionary flaw, the vast majority of leaders suffer from "Scale-Blindness." When we look at an emerging exponential technology, our brains instinctively project its growth linearly. We do a 1-2-3-4-5 - not a 1-2-4-8-16-32. We look at what it can do today—which is usually underwhelming—and assume next year it will be maybe 10% better. And the fact is, it could be 100% better, or 1,000%, or maybe even 10,000%
And because of our blindness, we fail to miss out on the significance of the trend.
Think about it another way - if we see a 10-foot wave coming and prepare accordingly, completely blind to the fact that the exponential function will turn it into a 100-foot tsunami by the time it reaches shore.
That's why principle **#16** in this series isn't about learning more facts; it's about forcing your brain to undergo a sort of exponential shock therapy so you can cure this blindness before it's too late. That's because there is comfort in incremental thinking!

Most people don't realise what is happening with the exponentiation of trends. And yet, it is and will continue to have a p[profound impact on them. That's why I'm writing this new 2026 series, launching tomorrow.
It's best to put this into perspective in the context of the reality of trends today.
A year ago this month, I was invited by the Office of the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates to address the annual AGM of the region - a room full of 700 cabinet ministers and government executives. Protecting Australia's extraordinary wildlife ?"The proposed changes to the EPBC Act do not deal with its fundamental problem: despite its name, the law does not prioritise protecting the environment. Its principle role is to allow projects – including fossil fuel developments – to go ahead, with some conditions attached to limit environmental damage."
"Native forest logging overseen by the states has been effectively exempt, despite a long list of legal cases in which it was found to have breached the laws. Forest destruction on private land for agriculture – a major driver of biodiversity loss across vast areas of western New South Wales and Queensland, and the Northern Territory – has rarely been assessed."
"There is little sign the legislation will tackle the huge problem of deforestation. Millions of hectares have been cleared without federal oversight, mostly for industrial farming. The state of the environment report cited evidence that 93% of the threatened species habitat cleared between 2000 and 2017 was not referred for assessment under national law. One hundred scientists wrote to Albanese this week calling for this to be urgently addressed."

Product lifecycles have collapsed as things become 'things from the olden days' faster. It is not just that business models that once lasted decades now face obsolescence in years or even months. The ability to continuously reinvent your value proposition is no longer optional; it is survival.
Let's call it "The End of Enduring Advantage." In the future, pretty much every organization is going to have to navigate the era of compressed innovation, mimicking what leading-edge organizations are already doing today.
Here's what's up: the fundamental rhythm of economic change has quickened to a pace that invalidates long-held strategic assumptions. The shift from stable, defensible market positions to a state of perpetual flux is not merely an increase in speed but a change in the very nature of competition.
Products used to last months, years, and even decades before they were obsolete - today, it might be mere months or even days.
Behind this trend is the age-old reality that eventually, every product and service runs its course - its life cycle comes to an end. Joseph Schumpeter's concept of "creative destruction" described the "process of industrial mutation that incessantly revolutionizes the economic structure from within, incessantly destroying the old one, incessantly creating a new one." Historically, this was envisioned as a powerful but periodic 'gale' that would sweep through the economy over decades.
Companies lasted a long time, as did the products they brought to market.
That's no longer the case. Today, this periodic gale has transformed into a perpetual, high-velocity hurricane.
The impact? The actual average lifespan of a company has decreased rather dramatically in the last few decades.
