The racially mixed , smartly dressed browsers of progressive books in this 1938 photograph seem to be living out the CPUSA slogan of that time, "Communism is Twentieth Century Americanism"; note the "Harvard Communist" in the lower right hand quarter of the picture, the nearby collection box for aid for Spain, and the photograph of volunteers who were fighting for the Spanish Republican cause.
The following year's cynically concluded Hitler-Stalin pact and the anticommunism of the postwar decades dealt the US left blows from which it has never fully recovered.
I wonder about the various fates of the individuals pictured here.

The #PopularFront against fascism returns almost a century after it was first adopted by #Comintern. Yesterday in #France, an electoral alliance was announced consisting of the Socialist Party, Communist Party, Ecologists, Mélenchon's France Insoumise, and a few other small parties.

Is the Left more interested in fighting with its allies (& itself) over the vanity of small differences, opening the door for the #Right to win #elections?
Is a move to the right (centre) merely validating the very rightest positions that the left should be fighting against?
What Tisdall, perhaps, downplays is the issue of #media ownership & its sharing of the political agenda.
