A “saga of procrastination and sharp practice”: the thread about Leith’s Tally Toor
If you were to go down to Leith Docks and venture where security won’t let you go, you would eventually come across a squat, circular and very curious masonry structure. What you have just found is the Tally Toor, the Leith Martello Tower. You would be forgiven for not realising it was there or for never having heard of it. It doesn’t look like much of a tower, but that’s because most of it has been buried within the reclaimed land behind the Easter Breakwater of the Port of Leith. There was a time when this once stood proudly upon the rocks in the Leith Roads.
The Leith Martello Tower. CC-BY-SA 2.0 Richard WebbMartello Towers were a response to the threat of coastal attacks or even invasion during the Napoleonic period of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. They were built throughout the British Isles and out into the Empire, but Leith is one of only three that were constructed in Scotland. The word Martello (or Tally to Leithers) is an Anglicisation of Torra di Mortella – a medieval Genoese round tower in the north of Corsica. This fortification caused the Royal Navy such disproportionate trouble to overcome it during the Siege of Saint Florent in 1794 that it was taken as a model defensive outpost for home use. The thirty-three men at Mortella had resisted bombardment of British warships and had held off the 700 men sent ashore to take it that it inspired a home grown variant as a model defensive outpost.
Watercolor drawing “View of Mortella Tower” by William Porter, 1794-1796. The Mariners’ Museum #1936.0491.000001/QW83The basic design of the British tower is rather like a squat lighthouse and they were to be located at advantageous coastal positions. Entrance was via a raised door accessed through a retractable ladder to make capture from the land more difficult. Inside, behind the thick stone walls, were two floors of accommodation and storage for an officer and about twenty-five men. Buried within the foundations would be a well and/or water cistern and perhaps a storeroom. But unlike a lighthouse, instead of a navigation beacon on the top instead there was an open fighting platform fitted with two or three heavy guns that could pivot be trained to attack approaching targets. The height of the tower meant it fired down upon ships, affording a raised and protected position for observation and signalling.
British sketch plan of the Torra di Mortella made after capture in 1794. It shows how the three guns mounted atop could be pivoted to command wide arcs of fire against would be attackers. Royal Museums Greenwish, PAD1622The Tally Toor was not the first Georgian-era fortification to defend Leith. In 1779, Leith and Edinburgh had been threatened by the squadron of the American John Paul Jones during the War of Independence and the city had responded to the threat from the sea by building Leith Fort to guard the harbour entrance. The Fort was never entirely satisfactory and for most of its life was used as an ordnance depot, a drill barracks for artillery volunteers and as accommodation for army administrators. In light of its deficiencies in 1807 the Board of Ordnance proposed a thirty-two foot high Martello tower on the rocks at the mouth of the Port of Leith to improve the defences.

This shows the position of the Mortella (sic) Tower relative to the approach to the Port of Leith and also Leith Fort towards the lower, left-hand corner. Reproduced with the permission of the National Library of ScotlandSomewhat unusually, the tower was not to be built by the military but was left to the Corporation of the City of Edinburgh to construct. Work began in 1809 but due to a “saga of procrastination and sharp practice” and it was not finally handed over to the Board until nearly 30 years later in 1838. The below painting by Robert Norie shows the end of the outer breakwater at Leith as it then was, with the tower being accessible across the interidal rocks at low water. The incomplete base storeys are being used as a handy mooring point for fishing boats.
Martello Tower, Leith, Low Water by Robert Norie, 1830s © Edinburgh City MuseumsIt had cost £17,179 18s 4½d, and it wasn’t even finished! Plus ça change for a construction project by the council in Edinburgh! The final structure was 45 feet high, with 16 feet of foundations built down into the rocks. The base diameter was 80 feet and the gun platform at the top was large enough to accommodate not one but three pivoting cannons. As a result of this, from the top the tower has an elegant cloverleaf (or fidget spinner!) appearance on account of the three overlapping gun positions.

Via Trove.Scot SC495680Within the foundations was a single central chamber and there were two staircases within the walls, leading up to the gun platform. Due to the relative peace with other European powers by the time it was completed the tower was not finally made ready to accept its guns until 1853, thirty-five years after it was first planned, prompted by the crisis of the Crimean War.

The 32-pdr was so-called because it fired a shot weighing thirty-two pounds and was the Royal Navy’s standard heavyweight shipboard weapon. The handy diagram below shows the main parts including the rammer, wad and pricker (no giggling at the back!)
Illustration of a 32 pounder cannonThese were the same such guns as were also mounted at Leith Fort itself, as can be seen in a series of earlier photos made there by David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson.

National Galleries ScotlandThe 1849 Ordnance Survey Town Plan clearly shows the tower and also one presumes the obvious route for the garrison to reach it should they ever need to across the barrier of intertidal rocks known as The Weir” the same route as shown in Norie’s painting.
OS 1849 Town Plan. Note the stairs from the sea wall on the left down to the rocks of “The Weir”. Reproduced with the permission of the National Library of ScotlandThe rocks on which the Tower was situated, once the Mussell Cape Rocks, became known instead as the Martello Rocks. Further, smaller towers for the Forth were planned at Cramond Island and Inchkeith but were judged not to be a pressing need and so work never started; given how long it took and how much it cost to build the first, that was probably a sensible decision. These would have carried two 24-pdr cannons rather than the three 32-pdrs at Leith. In 1854, the Inspector General of Fortifications prepared a report on the Forth defences in which he stated:
At Leith there are at present twelve heavy guns, mounted for the protection of the harbour and roadstead at Leith Fort and on a tower; it would be, however, very desirable to establish two batteries and a small barrack on the Island of Inch Keith.
Burgoyne’s reportAfter 1869 the disarmed tower was abandoned, just 15 or so years after it had finally been completed and occupied. Thereafter its main function was an interesting navigation marker for the approaches to Leith.
“Leith Martello Tower” by Francis William Staines (1800-76), with Inchkeith in the background. via Artwarefineart.com.As war clouds gathered and dispersed again on the horizon, there were occasional plans to re-establish the Tower as a defensive position. It was proposed in the 1880s to mount a 6-inch Rifled Breech Loader (RBL) gun on top, which appears never to have been completed. In 1891 an even bigger 9.2-inch Breech Loader (BL) gun was proposed but by 1894 it was instead suggested to place two 6-inch BL guns on the dock walls. In 1899, approval was given for two 4.7-inch Quick Firing (QF) guns for the Tower but once again these do not ever seem to have been installed. The following year it was back to two 6-inch pieces but again these remained paper plans. All these proposals are detailed in The Fortification of the Firth of Forth 1880-1977 by Gordon J. Barclay and Ron Morris, published by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 2019.

Neil Hynd bequest via Trove.Scot, DP312460In fact it does not seem that the Tower was ever actually re-armed to defend the Port against intrusion from the sea ever again. The citizens of Leith were however left with a curious object to explore, one which was easily accessible at low tide, and it became a source of fascination for generations of children. The picture below shows the scale of the abandoned fortification. Check out the boy in his swimmers looking over the parapet!
The Martello Tower at low tide, from “Martello Towers Worldwide” by W. H. ClementsBut that was not quite the end of the story for the Tower as a defensive position and it finally went to war in 1939 when it was reconfigured to act as an anti-aircraft gun platform. The insides were modified with hastily-built brick partition walls to reduce the risk of blast damage and on the top were mounted three concrete and cast iron positions for the guns.
Concrete gun bases and cast iron pedestals on the roof of the Tower in 1971. Trove.Scot SC495681After the war the Tower’s splendid isolation out at sea was about to be terminated. From the late 1930s onwards the Leith Docks Commissioners had been building vast new breakwaters around the harbour in an attempt to make it non-tideal and they were slowly edging towards the tower. By 1951 it was still outside the sea wall, but only just.
1951 aerial photo of the Martello Tower, from NCAP, showing ongoing land reclamation work behind itThe sea wall finally enclosed the tower in 1972 and with the land behind being built up by reclamation it appeared to be sinking lower and lower into the ground, when in reality the ground was rising higher and higher around it. The diagram below indicates just how deeply the tower was buried within the new docklands.
1972 cross section of the TowerThe slow march of Leith Docks out towards the Firth of Forth can be visualised in the below animation based on maps. It also shows how useful a defensive position the tower initially was when it was built, any ship wanting to enter the docks had to come around the Eastern and Middle Craigs and the Black Rocks, therefore had to pass close by the Tower’s guns.
We can no longer get anywhere near the Tower thanks to the stringent security at the docks, which has been stepped up significantly in recent years. Forth Ports, the current landowner, used to open it once a year to visitors but it’s been around a decade since anyone was afforded that privilege as far as I know. But we can still see the tower in art, look at enough paintings of Leith Docks and it pops up again and again.

Transcript from the Interview
Kerry Kulp: I’m Kerry Kulp, founding member of Velaspan.
Tom Hollingsworth: And I am Tom Hollingsworth, event lead for Mobility Field Day. We’re here with Kerry, he is a brand new delegate to Mobility Field Day and we are very excited to meet you. So why don’t you tell us a little bit about who you are. What’s your job role and what do you do?
Kerry: That’s a great question. I wear a lot of hats. As a founding partner of Velaspan I still have to fulfill some business leadership roles, business development roles, presale goals. I have a team of my own that I lead. Also still handle consulting, so some of the more technical side of things. It’s definitely the definition of a man with many hats.
Tom: How did you get into IT?
Kerry: So I started in IT doing computer training. I was actually in college for, of all things, criminal justice and sociology. Had every intention of going into the criminal justice field, planned to be a cop, maybe the FBI or Secret Service, something like that. I kind of always had a knack for IT and things like that and I had the opportunity to do some computer training, and I was good at it. From there I went into network engineering at a local ISP. From there, all the way back in 1998, is when I got my first job in the wireless and mobility industry.
Tom: That’s back in the day, that’s kind of around when it started.
Kerry: I was very much around when it started. That was still proprietary radio systems, we were doing a lot of prox and range LAN, deployments in hospitals. It was kind of crazy, we to deploy a proxem access point and put a proxem radio card in the device. Those were the days.
Tom: You’re taking me back. Now what are you most excited to see at the event this week?
Kerry: besides the people, because I’ve gotten to know, at least, a handful of the folks, the other delegates. I’ve known them for many years. Besides that I am just really excited to hear the presentations, learn more from, some of them that I know a lot about, like Cisco, Juniper, some of those. But maybe more importantly some that I don’t spend as much time with. I think those are going to be the really interesting ones, and that’s the Fortinets, the RUCKUSes (RUCKUS Networks), things like that that I just don’t spend that much time with on a daily basis.
Tom: That’s awesome. You’re in a very unique role in Velaspan, what are some of the challenges that you face regularly?
Kerry: Some of the challenges… We’re lucky. A couple of my partners that run our service delivery team have done a tremendous job of building a process for onboarding new resources so they have a tremendously successful process to bring in really green engineers, folks that might not have any experience in the industry and then build them very quickly into folks that can go out and do site surveys, do some basic design. Obviously some higher level leadership to guide them and mentor them, but they do a great job on that side. On my side, the kind of the consulting and managing services side, we really haven’t figured that part out as well yet. It’s a little bit harder to find the folks who have the depth of knowledge to kind of roll right in and start doing things meaningfully. So really its personnel, right now, and it’s trying to find folks that have enough experience on both the wireless side, networking side, security side, ranging across so many technology platforms and vendors, its just hard to find.
Tom: I like that approach because it cultivates the right mindset, it cultivates the right training set to someone to where they need to be in their career. It lends well to the fact that so many people speak highly of the work that you do. Putting yourself in a different set of shoes, If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing, what is your dream job?
Kerry: Wow that is a tough one. I tell people I cut grass, but I do that because if I tell them what I really do, they always have home network questions that they want answered so when I say I cut grass, nobody really has any questions. But that would probably rank pretty highly up there as something I would like to do. It’s kind of, it’s immediately rewarding. You take a messy grass field and turn it into something nice. But all kidding aside I would probably still do something in technology. We’re branching out a little bit into some cybersecurity stuff. We’ve always kind of done it for you know, probably about two thirds, three quarters of Velaspan’s history. We’ve been doing some cybersecurity stuff but not formally. We’re formalizing that now. It’s kind of got me excited. I’d probably still be doing a lot of the same things, just maybe with a cybersecurity focus. And that’s if I’m not cutting grass.
Tom: I appreciate the time today Kerry and thank you for teaching us a little bit about who you are and a little bit about what you do. For those of you out there that are interested, you can check out more of these Meet The Delegate interviews on our website at Gestalt IT dot com. Magnum (Wonder Man)
Criação: Destin Daniel Cretton, Andrew Guest
Estúdio: Marvel Studios (Television), Family Owned, Onyx Collective, Disney

Criação: Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, Tom King
Estúdio: DC Studios, Warner Bros. Television, HBO

Batman: Cruzado Encapuzado – 2ª temporada
Criação: Bruce Timm
Estúdio: Warner Bros. Animation, Amazon MGM Studios, Bad Robot Productions, 6th & Idaho, DC Entertainment

“Republicans, any minute now… ” John Buss @repeat1968
Good Day, Sky Dancers!
I’ve been blogging long enough to remember Fridays as a quiet news day. We’re facing President’s Day on Monday. We can’t talk about Presidents these days without the overwhelming need for lawyers. This is crazy. I feel like I’m watching a TV Lawyer Drama. My mother loved them, so I remember everyone from Perry Mason to the Law and Order series. Real-life court drama is far whackier than I ever thought. Just think, I was called for jury duty this month. I can think of a few states that are probably running out of jurors by now.
I’m watching the Fulton County District Attorney’s father testifying why Black Americans keep cash on hand. He’s retelling a story about the time he had a Fellowship at Harvard, and a restaurant nearby would not take any of his credit cards. The store even displayed an AmEx sign, but they would not take his. This happened when Fanni was 3. This is another story from Black America that Wipipo must see.
I’m not sure you watched her yesterday, but she left her accusers looking pretty bad. This is from Talking Points Memo. “Fani Willis Endures Disrespect, Racist Tropes, And Public Humiliation.” It’s written by David Kurtz.
The smoldering confrontation in an Atlanta courtroom between District Attorney Fani Willis and the coterie of Trump co-defendants had so many layers of gender, race, and power dynamics that it felt like a theatrical production in which the playwright got a little too exuberant and ended up with an over-the-top script.
Any playwright would die for Willis’ meme-a-minute dialogue, throwing off lines so memorable and original that it was hard to keep up:
“A man is not a plan.”
“I’m not going to emasculate a black man.” (Oh, but she did.)
“I’m not a hand holder.”
The hearing was ostensibly about whether her romantic relationship with the special prosecutor she hired to manage the RICO election interference case was disqualifying. But that was a thin veil over the roiling cauldron of disrespect, racist tropes, and public humiliation that the defendants were indulging in.
Willis came in red hot, literally running from her office to the courtroom when it was her time to testify. She took over the room. She raised and waived objections from the witness chair. She refused to be led down primrose paths by defense counsel. She talked over everyone: defense counsel, the judge, and her own team. I couldn’t help but think that Trump himself would secretly admire her command and bravura.
But it wasn’t the performative high dudgeon that Bill Clinton patented and every politican since has doubled down with. It was the seething, barely controlled anger of a Black woman put in a position none of her white male counterparts have had to endure, at the hands of a criminal defendant no less. White prosecutors have used the power of the law to torment Black people for centuries, but a Black woman becomes prosecutor and finds herself tormented by white criminal defendants.
Fani Willis’ father addresses why he always keeps cash on hand pic.twitter.com/h3SZ0sIcrJ
— MSNBC (@MSNBC) February 16, 2024
The author concludes thusly.
Most of the news coverage elided the racial and gender power dynamics at play. But Black people recognize this modern day spectacle of demeaning and dehumanizing treatment: Willis’ personal life scrutinized, her sex life exposed to public ridicule, her ways of handling money and relationships treated not as a difference of culture or social class but as unethical and disqualifying. And racists recognize it, too! Fox News was beside itself with the spectacle. To take one example, actually just one word: “pedigree.”
I think that when young women see this, they will have their Anita Hill Moment. We still have a long way to go before women, and black women, in particular, are not singled out for things that white men basically do all the time. It’s only a problem when anyone else does it.
All of this is part and parcel of the Legal Clowns around Trump and his criminal and insurrectionist cronies. We all have to watch people get sullied so that Donald Trump looks like he’s not alone with his inappropriate, criminal, and traitorous behaviors. As I said, yesterday was a display of Law and Republican Disorder. Hunter Biden should consider a large number of civil suits over this one. The headline and story are from the AP. “FBI informant charged with lying about Joe and Hunter Biden’s ties to Ukrainian energy company. This guy was the center of attention for right-wing media for weeks and months. Sean Hannity considered his testimony to be the smoking that would lead to the impeachment of Joe. Well, their guy’s a bigger liar than Trump, and he’s in trouble.
An FBI informant has been charged with fabricating a multimillion-dollar bribery scheme involving President Joe Biden, his son Hunter and a Ukrainian energy company, a claim that is central to the Republican impeachment inquiry in Congress.
Alexander Smirnov falsely reported to the FBI in June 2020 that executives associated with the Ukrainian energy company Burisma paid Hunter and Joe Biden $5 million each in 2015 or 2016, prosecutors said in an indictment. Smirnov told his handler that an executive claimed to have hired Hunter Biden to “protect us, through his dad, from all kinds of problems,” according to court documents.
Prosecutors say Smirnov in fact had only routine business dealings with the company in 2017 and made the bribery allegations after he “expressed bias” against Joe Biden while he was a presidential candidate.
Smirnov, 43, appeared in court in Las Vegas briefly Thursday after being charged with making a false statement and creating a false and fictitious record. He did not enter a plea. The judge ordered the courtroom cleared after federal public defender Margaret Wightman Lambrose requested a closed hearing for arguments about sealing court documents. She declined to comment on the case.
This headline from NBC explains the Trump Legal Team’s decision to not take his residential immunity charges to the Supreme Court last night. I guess he can delay things more, but here’s the analysis by Lawrence Hurley. “Trump opts against Supreme Court appeal on civil immunity claim over Jan. 6 lawsuits. The decision not to seek high court review means cases brought against Trump over Jan. 6 can move forward in district court, although he can still mount an immunity defense.” In other words, we still get to hear his whiny, irritating voice say they took A-WAY my prezidental immunity.
Lawsuits seeking to hold Donald Trump personally accountable for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol can move forward after the former president chose not to take his broad immunity claim to the Supreme Court.
Trump had a Thursday deadline to file a petition at the Supreme Court contesting an appeals court decision from December that rejected his immunity arguments, but he did not do so.
The appeals court made it clear that Trump could still claim immunity later in the proceedings in three cases brought by Capitol Police officers and members of Congress.
“President Trump will continue to fight for presidential immunity all across the spectrum,” said Steven Cheung, a Trump spokesman.
The civil lawsuits against Trump are separate from the criminal case against him that also arose from Jan. 6. On Monday, Trump asked the justices to put that case on hold on immunity grounds.
Trump’s lawyers argued that any actions he took on Jan. 6 fall under the scope of his responsibilities as president, thereby granting him immunity from civil liability. The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia rejected that argument, ruling that Trump was acting in his role as a political candidate running for office, not as president.
We’re expecting today’s ruling on the civil Fraud case in New York State’s District Court. This is from The Guardian. “Ruling expected in Donald Trump’s $370m New York fraud trial. Judge delayed ruling to set fine in trial over Trump’s New York business dealings after late-breaking information came to light.” Live updates to the site are ongoing.
A judge is expected to rule on whether Donald Trump should pay a $370m fine in his New York fraud trial and face a lifetime ban from the New York real estate industry.
The New York attorney general’s office sued Trump for inflating the value of his assets on government financial statements. Trump’s adult sons, Donald Trump Jr and Eric Trump, and two former Trump Organization executives, Allen Weisselberg and Jeff McConney, are also defendants in the case.
The New York AG’s office initially asked for $250m in disgorgement, or the amount of money that was wrongfully profited after Trump fudged his net worth. In their written closing arguments in January, prosecutors ended up bumping up their disgorgement figure to $370m.
Prosecutors are also asking the judge, Arthur Engoron, to ban Trump from the New York real estate industry. It’s a similar punishment to that which a New York federal court meted out to “pharma bro” Martin Shkreli after he was found guilty of price-gouging a life-saving drug. Prosecutors in the Trump case cited the Shkreli ruling as an example of what they see as a fitting punishment for Trump.
The fine and a ban would be on top of the punishment Engoron instructed in his September pre-trial ruling, when he ordered the cancellation of Trump’s business licenses. Trump, who has denied any wrongdoing, has appealed that ruling and will undoubtedly appeal a second guilty verdict.
Lara Trump won’t back down as she debuts her latest hit! John Buss @repeat1968

I think we all can agree that we’ve just had enough of him and want him to go away no matter what it takes!
Just one last sad note today. This is from Jim Heintz, writing at the Associated Press. “Alexei Navalny, the fiercest foe of Russia’s Putin, has died, Russian authorities say.”
Alexei Navalny, who crusaded against official corruption and staged massive anti-Kremlin protests as President Vladimir Putin’s fiercest foe, died Friday in the Arctic penal colony where he was serving a 19-year sentence, Russia’s prison agency said. He was 47.
The stunning news — less than a month before an election that will give Putin another six years in power — brought renewed criticism and outrage directed at the Kremlin leader who has cracked down on all opposition at home.
Putin may have killed him, but Navalny’s memory will live on in the hearts and minds of many.

“This is a book that pop music fans will love; an interesting collection for anyone wanting to study the art of the interview, trainwrecks included.” Graeme Watson, Out In Perth “It’s obvious Antonino has a great knowledge and love for cultural journalism.
