I once absend-mindedly ordered Three Mile Island dressing in a restaurant and, with great presence of mind, they brought Thousand Island Dressing and a bottle of chili sauce.

"Scum," said Crash, his voice low with resigned menace, "you've bought a leopard, haven't you?"

i also pictured 4 individual eyes, till i noticed all his double meanings.
a friend at school told me about it, but i didn't try it.
the covers put me off, and i thought it would be too fantasy and geeky.
his name didn't help.
it was 20 years later that someone gave me a book, and i was hooked.
i now return the favor and give people his books where i can.

Having never been to a Discworld Con before, I'm reading through the traditions page on the website to familiarise myself with some of what to expect.
This entry is lovely:
Silas T Firefly
Sir Terry Pratchett was always happy to engage with his fans and attended the DWCons when he could, usually as Guest of Honour. Before becoming a famous author, Terry was a fan himself and understood how Conventions worked from both perspectives.
This led to him fostering a good relationship with his fans and when he could, he would sit with folks in the bar, or other communal spaces of the hotel and chat casually with anyone and everyone. There was respect on both sides, but (whisper it not!) even famous authors get tired and need personal space.
When Terry felt the need to be left alone, he would subtly indicate this by switching his badge to one that read Silas T Firefly. It was made common knowledge that if you were to meet someone around the hotel who had this badge that it might look like Terry Pratchett, but this was a completely different person. A very private individual who just wished a little peace…
The name may be a reference to the Groucho Marx character Rufus T. Firefly in the 1933 movie Duck Soup.
In memorandum, one Convention membership and badge is left free each year under this name.

Being a werewolf meant having the dexterity and jaw power to instantly rip out a man's jugular. It was a trick of her father's that had always annoyed her mother, especially when he did it just before meals.

No enemies had ever taken Ankh-Morpock. Well *technically* they had, quite often; the city welcomed free-spending barbarian invaders, but somehow the puzzled raiders found, after a few days, that they didn't own their horses any more, and within a couple of months they were just another minority group with its own graffiti and food shops.

I am currently rather enjoying my first read-through of the Discworld series by Sir Terry Pratchett. As of today, I am a stone's throw away from finishing Interesting Times and starting Maskerade (probably later tonight).
The quote below was the first quote that I deemed worthy of retaining for posterity, upon my first reading of The Colour of Magic.
----------------------------------
"His was the air of one who is unjustly put upon, who is dreaded and feared, yet who is the only friend of the poor and the best doctor for the mortally wounded....
Death, although exceptionally busy at all times, decided that He now had a hobby."
From: "The Colour of Magic" by Sir Terry Pratchett (1983)

NEXT WEEK on #ThePlaylist
I'm off to Discworld Con in a couple of weeks, so next week I think it's only fair that the theme should be:
The Discworld
Songs about wizards, and flying turtles, and DEATH, and THE DEATH OF RATS, will abound. Or just songs about discs, or worlds. Are there any flat Earth bangers?
Sling them this way using #ThePlaylistSuggestion, and together we'll spend two hours attempting to make the memory of Sir Pterry proud.

It's time for our first Server Spotlight!
We want to help people find their communities across the #fediverse so we're featuring servers here on this account.
First up: The Mended Drum, a home for fans of all things Sir Terry Pratchett.
It is said that if you stay on The Mended Drum long enough, you'll meet every hero on the server: https://mendeddrum.org/directory
(keep an eye on your horse, though 😉)
