  1. Wapiti (elk), Mom and Calf
    Jemez Mountains, NM

I spotted these elk running along while driving into the Santa Fe National Forest from the north side. Look carefully and you can see the calf is still sporting a few of its childhood spots.

  2. East Fork of the Gila River
    Gila National Forest, NM

[Reminder for our friends from afar: Gila is pronounced something like He la here in the southwestern U.S.]

  3. Valley of the Gods, UT

This is from my very first visit to this amazing place. I was in such awe I only managed to take a couple photos. I've since been back many, many times and have many, many wonderful photos (some of which I've already shared here and more to come, I'm sure.)

  4. Petroglyphs at Una Vida
Chaco Culture National Historic Park, NM

I'm not a photographer. A Photographer would have timed the visit to when the light fell uniformly across the cliff face. I'm just a person who takes photos of the places I'm visiting.

But these petroglyphs as so cool, I thought you'd like to see them even so.

  5. White Rim Trail
    Canyonlands National Park, UT

We stopped to chat with a group of mountain bikers who were on a supported tour of this amazing trail. That's my rig with the NM flag on the back door (as if you couldn't guess.) The" Island In the Sky" complex is in the background.

Photo by my late friend, Dan.

  6. Eclipse Viewing Spot
    Castle Gardens Petroglyphs Rd, WY

Here is the campsite where a group of friends* met to view the 2017 eclipse. A few came in a couple days earlier to secure the site on BLM land in the center of Wyoming. They sent the GPS coordinates to me** and I emailed them to the others.

You can't tell from this photo, but the countryside was full of many other folks camped out to witness the eclipse. The weather held and everyone got great views!

*Not all the friends had previously met IRL, but most had met on the WanderTheWest.com forum, most of whose members have pop-up truck campers, as can be seen in the photo.

**GPS coordinates of the campsite were sent via inReach handheld satellite communications device.

  7. Golden Hour
Chaco Culture National Historic Park, NM

Yes, you owe it to yourselves to visit this beautiful desert canyon filled with more amazing sights than you would have thought before you visited. It's far enough off the beaten path that you can enjoy a #SilentSunday surrounded by the remains of a vast culture. I took this photo on my way to the campground after a wonderful day exploring the canyon.

  8. Mural of Traditional Navajo Scenes
Teec Nos Pos Trading Post, AZ

Here are four scenes I photographed (with permission) in the courtyard of the Navajo trading post in Teec Nos Pos which is very close to Four Corners.

This #ThrowbackThursday is different than my usual post. I hope you enjoy seeing this beautiful native artwork.

  10. Milky Way above South Canyon
    Beef Basin, UT

Look carefully and you can see the silhouette of the canyon and a ghost juniper tree.

One frame of a wide-angle timelapse sequence. I applied a cooling filter for a more natural appearance and noise reduction.

  15. Waxing Gibbous Moon
    Central New Mexico, USA

I was looking for a photo for #MoonMonday and came across this old one. Curiously enough, the moon today is in almost the exact same phase as this 2009 image!

I took this photo using a 5.1 MP Olympus Wide Zoom camera though my Swarovski spotting scope. Don't recall the eyepiece setting.

    Grand Canyon National Park, AZ

As I post this #photo the sun is just about to peek over the mountain east of Albuquerque. I felt like I needed to commemorate #sunrise this morning, for some reason.

  22. Bluebonnets
    Llano County, TX

I have been reliably informed, by @RainyDayWoman and others, that the Bluebonnets (lupines) are now blooming in south and central Texas.

This photo from nearly 20 years ago shows a roadside field in the Hill Country. Taken with my then new 5.1 Megapixel Olympus wide zoom camera (an upgrade from a 2 Mp Epson.)

  23. Monument Valley seen from Cedar Point Road
Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, UT

From the same location as yesterday's sunset photo, this early morning view looks to the south where the amazing formations of Monument Valley can be seen in the distance. The San Juan River is about 1000 feet below and beyond the edge of the mesa. Truly a magical spot.

  24. North Window
    Arches National Park, UT

It was a cloudy, dreary day, but I still had to wait over 10 minutes to get a photo of the formation without crowds of visitors in the frame. Arches are called "windows" if you can look through them and get a nice view.
