  1. @itguyeric I'm a huge #FFXIV fan. They recently updated the free tier to include through the 3rd expansion.

I will be honest - the initial Main Story Quest is slow at the beginning. They have been revisiting it to remove some of the slog, but it isn't as good as later expansions.

But I still feel there is so much to do in XIV that fits for how I want to game. Between the ability to run all jobs, tons of non-combat content, and a deep RP community if that's your jam.

  2. @itguyeric I'm an #ESO player since the beta, but I'd vote for trying FF if you haven't played it already. Neither have I, mind you, but I'm all for trying the new thing and seeing if you like it more than the old thing. If you don’t, you can always go back to the old thing you like, but then you'll know. :-)

(I’d have moved on from ESO, but I play it a couple of hours every week with family members in different cities, and it's our way of staying in touch. So I'm here for the duration. 🤷‍♂️)

  4. Today's the day! I'm on stage this afternoon at LinuxFest Northwest.

"Escaping the End-of-Life Nightmare: Lessons from the Linux Graveyard" 🪦

Every Linux admin has a story. A server nobody touched for years. A distro that hit EOL while carrying something critical. A 2AM phone call that didn't have to happen.

If you're in Bellingham, come find me.

  10. CW: But its always...DNS

When the network is broken and you need answers fast:

Trace the route to a host:
    traceroute google.com

Check what's listening on your ports:
    ss -tuln

    Test DNS resolution:
    dig google.com

The network is never actually down. Something specific broke. These tell you what.

  11. Stop burying decisions in email threads.

Move the conversation to a threaded discussion instead! Slack, Teams, whatever you use: where context stays attached, replies are organized, and nobody has to scroll through a reply-all chain to find the answer.

  12. Going to start doing Live Ops again! Live coding and troubleshooting sessions built around real SysAdmin tasks.

Before I spin up the next one I want to know: what are you actually struggling with in your home lab right now?

Drop it in the comments. The messier the better.

  13. LinuxFest Northwest is here and I'm so ready.
There's something about being in a room full of people who genuinely care about open source that just recharges the batteries.
If you're here this weekend come find me. Let's talk Linux, homelab, or whatever's on your mind.

  14. Do Not Disturb isn't enough on its own.

The real move is setting VIP status on the people and channels you actually need to hear from so the right alerts still get through while everything else waits.

Your boss, your on-call rotation, your kids' school. Everything else can wait.

  15. Early in your career, it’s easy to chase titles.

Mid-career, you realize skills compound faster than titles do.

Stack skills. Learn systems. Understand how things actually work. Titles follow competence.

  16. One of the smallest changes that made the biggest difference in my workday: scheduling Do Not Disturb. Not turning it on when I remember. Actually scheduling it.

Deep work hours in the morning. Lunch. After 6pm. Blocked and protected. Notifications will always be there when you're ready for them. Your focus window won't.

What hours do you guard the most?

  17. I'm writing a blog post about meeting nightmares and I need your stories.
The ones that should have been an email. The ones with 40 people and no agenda. The ones where someone shared their screen for 20 minutes and couldn't find the file.
Drop them in the comments. The worse (or funnier) the better.

  21. I spent last week rebuilding my entire setup — migrating from #Unraid to #Proxmox.

New storage layout, new VMs, new containers, new automations.
It’s amazing how a clean slate can simplify everything and spark new ideas.

Still tweaking, still optimizing, but honestly? Feels good to be back in the #hypervisor world.

Any of you doing winter homelab overhauls right now?

  23. Midweek question for #Sysadmins and #IT folks:

When things slow down a bit toward the end of the year, do you tend to:
    • Clean up old configs and tech debt
    • Experiment in your homelab
    • Learn something new
    • Or… just keep the lights on and coast?

No wrong answers. Curious where everyone’s head is right now.

  24. If you work in IT long enough, burnout eventually shows up at your door. I learned that lesson the hard way.

At #SCaLE I gave a talk called “From Bash to Burnout: Staying Sane in a 24/7 Tech World.”

    I covered:
    - Early warning signs of burnout
    - Habits that quietly push us there
    - Practical ways to protect your energy

IT should be a sustainable career, not a sprint.

  27. One of the hardest questions in enterprise Linux isn’t which distro to use.

    It’s knowing when you need:
    - Community support
    - Commercial support
    - Security certifications
    - Compliance guarantees

The right answer depends entirely on your environment. That nuance gets lost in a lot of internet debates.
