@jselea Thanks goes out to Jonathan for this (still quite relevant) tidbit. For those of us who spent a lot of time with Sun #Solaris up through Solaris 10 there's a lot to appreciate here.
Solaris has been parted out, but here is an Enterprise production scale incarnation that's worth a looksee and testdrive. It's really a shame that the Evil EllisonCo destroyed so much - just discarded it like trash, following aquisitions, and what they didn't toss out in the trash they dissappointed the developers so much that it spawned forks that exist to fill the vacuum to this day:
- MySQL ==> MariaDB
- OOo ==> LibreOffice (The Document Foundation)
- Sun Enterprise Servers - rebranded as Oracle boxes
- Sun Solaris 10 ==> OpenIndiana and others (OmniOS, for one)
- Sun VirtualBox - Oracle VirtualBoxSo without dwelling on the past or further ado, let's follow Jonathan's tour, shall we?

I need to make a mental note of the fact that slow responsiveness to IPIs not issued via hypercall in qemu KVM can pathologically degrade performance for the next time I'm writing a kernel using qemu as a target system. I'm terrified of finding out whether qemu MTTCG is similarly affected, because it has no such hypercalls in mainline qemu.

Are there seriously no big companies using #citrix on a #Proxmox #hypervisor? Just because there is no support its not feasible at all? Are we really dependent on some other #BigTech company when moving from #VMWare?

RE: https://mastodon.social/@CyReVolt/116261204236818661
Truth be told: Today's systems are nested runtimes.
Servers be like: firmware runtime + Linux + cloud runtime
Clients be like: firmware runtime + Linux + web browserThat is, there is sometimes a hypervisor between firmware and OS.
Or you go with @oxidecomputer for servers, and you get: Illumos (derivative) + cloud runtime
Or a Chromebook for a client: Linux + web browserYes. There is no need for extra runtimes in #firmware or a #hypervisor. Consider those optional, not mandatory.

🐢💤 Breaking news: #OpenBSD can now pretend to be a real OS by running on Apple's #Hypervisor, thanks to a few lines of code wizardry. Who knew virtual invisibility on #macOS was the final frontier for OpenBSD? 🌌🤷♂️

I spent last week rebuilding my entire setup — migrating from #Unraid to #Proxmox.
New storage layout, new VMs, new containers, new automations.
It’s amazing how a clean slate can simplify everything and spark new ideas.Still tweaking, still optimizing, but honestly? Feels good to be back in the #hypervisor world.
Any of you doing winter homelab overhauls right now?

Wouldn't it be cool if we built a little bootable #hypervisor that could run #Android in a protected VM for grandma, making her old computer safe, fast, and simple, and then, because it's built on that same secure fabric, you could just add more computers to the network for instant backup, shared resources, and more fun?

#ProxmoxVE 8 to 9 Upgrade #Guide
This #tutorial walks through the in-place upgrade from #Proxmox8 to #Proxmox9, documenting each step along the way. Our goal was to ensure a smooth transition while preserving all existing #virtualmachines, #containers, and configurations. This guide covers verifying system health, updating repositories, performing the upgrade, and confirming the installation afterward, all from the #Proxmox Shell.

For anyone still using or considering the free #oVirt as virtualization management platform:⚠️ Please don't. It is a broken nightmare on community life support.⚠️
After #RedHat has ended support for its commercial spin Red Hat Virtualization (RHV) last year the development of oVirt practically came to a halt.
There hasn't been an official stable release for over a year despite security issues, and numerous bugs. The official recommendation is to use nightly releases to get the latest fixes. Too bad you won't be able to roll back via DNF if an update fails because older nightly releases are gone from the repo.
And yes, nightly releases do break oVirt at times. The latest nightly causes updates to fail because of incomplete dependency changes.
The web interface of the official mailing list is offline most of the time, the documentation is a confusing and outdated mess.
Upgrades to newer Linux distribution releases such as RHEL 9 or even 10 based systems are extremely painful and not officially supported.
Move your VMs to #ProxmoxVE or any other actively maintained KVM based solution.
