Talking about ocean carbon cycle - my favorite research topic - is always a pleasure. Letting me talk about this in front of the #EGU23 audience is a real treat.

Sir David #Attenborough, who inspired so many kids to study Earth sciences, has turned 97 today!
I flew on the same aircraft (Hercules) with him to #McMurdo station in Jan 2010 where they filmed Frozen Planet and I tried to figure out how to do field work in marine biology.
His visit to the station was the talk of the continent! He gave a brilliant lecture. But the funniest memory was that the BBC team asked us to remove warning signs around our ice holes to get a pristine view of Antarctica.

Auf der ganzen Welt laufen #Klimaklagen, in denen Regierungen wegen Untätigkeit verklagt werden.
Es gibt einen zum Nachdenken anregenden #Film #Ökozid, in dem im Jahr 2034 vom #Klimawandel gefährdete Länder #Deutschland vor den #Internationalen #Gerichtshof bringen, weil es versäumt hat, die #Emissionen zu senken, was zum #Verlust von #Lebensgrundlagen und Eigentum führt.

Leider verfehlt der Film #DerSchwarm völlig das Ausmaß der sich anbahnenden globalen Katastrophe, die (im Buch) darauf abzielt, die Menschen von der Zerstörung des Planeten abzuhalten.
Besonders enttäuschend ist, dass die Botschaft des Buches - es ist noch nicht zu spät, aber wir müssen gemeinsam handeln, um die Planetenkrise aufzuhalten - im Film zunichte gemacht wird.
Ich hoffe, dass diejenigen, die den Film schon gesehen haben, nicht davon abgehalten werden, das Buch zu lesen.

Auch eindeutig ist dass die #Klimakrise dem deutschen Volk schadet, nicht in ferner Zukunft, sondern jetzt, durch zunehmende #Klimaextreme Ernährungs- und Wirtschaftsunsicherheiten und daraus entstehender gesellschaftlicher und politischer Zwänge.
Was steht also im Weg, diesen Schaden abzuwenden?

To compute the radiative forcing from CO2 in Earth system models, we use either CO2 emissions or concentrations computed by the Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs*) that simplistically relate the physical and social systems. These models traditionally assume GDP growth.
The pros and cons of perpetual economic grow vs degrowth remains an academic debate lacking scientific consensus.
