Was wearing this today and remembered I hadn’t posted it on Mastodon since leaving bsky. It’s a t-shirt I designed for the retail store at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, when I was stationed there.

Cutbacks to #US #Antarctic #Science Risk Geopolitical Shifts at the #SouthPole
Reductions to #American research at the South Pole could affect the politics of the southernmost continent
#McMurdo—normally a humming hub of research—has gotten quieter. Amid budget concerns and delayed upgrades to the station’s aging infrastructure, the #NSF has pulled back on the number of scientific projects and associated people it sends to the globe’s deepest south.

#NASA uses its #Telemetry and #Data Relay #Satellite System to maintain contact with its fleet of #spacecraft in #Earth #orbit.
#TDRSS allowed NASA to have constant communication with the Space Shuttle, and continues to provide service to the #ISS and #Hubble.
Even #McMurdo Station in #Antarctica can use it to communicate.

As I mentioned, the #BIG60 #balloon launched yesterday from #McMurdo with AESOP-Lite onboard as the closing flight of the #NASA launch campaign in #Antarctica continues to lose altitude steadily.
Since it reached a float altitude of 156.000 ft the 60 million cubic feet balloon is now flying at 126.000 ft. This is a clear indication of a possible leak and is a situation well beyond any probable recovery, even dumping all ballast available.
At this peace of descent, the flight will end soon.

The show is over. Onboard cameras have been turned off.
The last image I captured of the BIG60 balloon of mission 735NT can be seen below when the balloon was at 144.000 ft at about 18:57 utc.
Real-time tracking of the balloon is available here: https://www.csbf.nasa.gov/map/balloon4/Google737NT.htm

Now, operations are underway at #McMurdo station in #Antarctica for the launch of #AESOP-Lite the 3rd. and final mission of the #NASA balloon campaign.
The instrument is a magnet spectrometer devoted to the study of cosmic ray electrons. It was developed by a collaboration between the Universities of Delaware & California, Santa Cruz.
It will be launched under a 60 million cubic feet balloon, the largest on NASA's inventory and the biggest ever launched in Antarctica.
