  1. I am excited that this year #GlobalCarbonBudget for the first time included our prediction of next year atmospheric CO2.

Such predictions are based on initialized by observations Earth System Models with interactive carbon cycle. They account for changes in carbon sinks in response to climate variability, allowing to predict whether atmospheric CO2 changes faster or slower then expected from changes in emissions alone.

A news piece (German only for now).

  2. This year's Global Carbon Budget is released today.

Find out where did the carbon go in 2022 and what are the projections until the end of 2023.

    In a nutshell:
    - Fossil CO2 emissions up by 1.1%, record high in 2023.
    - Land use change emissions somewhat smaller then last year.
    - Natural land and ocean CO2 sinks are maintained, despite negative impact of climate change on their strength.
    - CO2 concentrations continue to increase.

  4. We just finished the #GlobalCarbonBudget workshop. Three intensive days (online for me) of learning new research insights on #CarbonSinks, land and ocean carbon cycle, #CDR, methodologies to track #carbon in the #EarthSystem, atmospheric inversions, carbon cycle predictions.

This, initially a purely academic project, is building profile and reaching out to wider audiences.
Thanks to organizers @pfriedling Pep Canadell and everyone involved!

  5. 🌊 @TatianaIlyina has been appointed director at the MPI for Marine Microbiology in #Bremen! Congratulations on this fantastic success!🎉

From 2010-2026 Tatiana led a research group at #MPIM, simultaneously taking on a professorship at the University of Hamburg #UHH & @hereon in 2023.

We're sad to see her leave, and at the same time we're excited to see the groundbreaking research she is going to conduct in her new role! Here's to an exciting new chapter! 👏

  6. 🌊 Measurements of #CO2 dissolved in the ocean surface are essential to quantify the marine #carbon sink, but data is scarce.
⛵️ #MPIM researcher Jacqueline Behncke et al. investigated if measurements taken on board sailing boats can fill in the blank spots. They found that with existing data, the marine carbon sink is underestimated, but 2 more circumnavigations already improve the estimate. 📖 science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv

  7. 💡Surprised by simplicity: #MPIM researchers have derived a useful simplification from idealized Earth system model experiments.📝Victor Brovkin et al. showed that land & ocean #carbon uptake grow proportionally as emissions continue at 10 PgC/yr. The proportionality persists even when emissions are reversed, simplifying carbon‑climate dynamics to a single equation that links atmospheric CO₂ to fossil emissions.#climatescience

  13. That Bruce from an interactive #GoogleDoodle celebrating #MarieTharp work, who deleted her work and instructed her to redo everything was actually really stupid.
It makes you wonder where we would be scientifically if the Bruces of this world had believed more in women.

  14. @TatianaIlyina Of course :eyeroll: the photo shows #Harkonnen troopers protecting a #spice harvester on #Arrakis also known as #Dune der #Wüstenplanet. 😬

Note that the whole galaxy was dependent on the spice melange and many wars were fought over its control.
Like the Harkonnens which cared most for their profits and little for human life.
In the end the #Fremen drove the Harkonnens off and took control over their #planet.

  15. 👏 Congrats to Danai Filippou, IMPRS-ESM PhD candidate in the group of @TatianaIlyina, for winning the best poster award at the 23rd Swiss Climate Summer School in Ascona! 🏆
Her work, “Ocean Compound Extreme Events Under Emission Reduction and Negative CO₂ Pathways”, explores how compound extremes, like marine heatwaves combined with #acidification or low oxygen extremes, evolve under emission cuts and net-negative CO₂.

  17. Ocean oxygen: The role of the Ocean in the oxygen we breathe and the threat of deoxygenation | New report of the European Marine Board

#Deoxygenation is increasing in the coastal and open Ocean, primarily due to human-induced #globalwarming and nutrient run-off from land, and projections show that the Ocean will continue losing oxygen as global warming continues.

    Great question!

I'd go with "splainer". The "splain" as a genre is predominantly carried out from men to women, hence the famous "mansplaining" term. Notwithstanding, it can be done from any gender towards any gender, leading to the suggested broader usage "splain".

Oh, and yes you are right: the above sounds quite like a splain itself.
