Het kan natuurlijk ook gewoon zo zijn dat ik niet met de juiste personen heb genetwerkt bij het aardwetenschappennerdcongres.

I went to the European Geosciences Union General Assembly in Wien (hum...about 3 weeks ago) #EGU23 @EuroGeosciences
I presented a way to measure snow depth with #ICESat2 @nasa (https://zenodo.org/record/7892450#.ZF5NYKXP02w) and projections of the snowpack evolution in spanish mountains (https://zenodo.org/record/7892437#.ZF5NYaXP02w)

I went there by train (Grenoble-Geneva-Zürich-Wien, Wien-Zürich-Paris-Barcelona). Night train between Wien and Zürich always got delayed ~2h, keep that in mind before planning your trip!

Now more than ever, water resources are in the spotlight because of geopolitics and #climate change. During this @EuroGeosciences #EGU23 press conference, we hear from researchers about a metalliferous Cretaceous formation that pollutes pristine #Arctic waters, the ingenious use of isotopic fingerprinting in Italy to unmask environmental polluters, and how the finance sector has a crucial role to play in addressing the global water crisis.

By the way, I’ve just returned by train on Friday night from the annual European Geosciences Union conference #EGU23 in Vienna, with 13,000 participants. As always in the big climate science events, a large and exciting part of the presentations & discussions was on paleoclimate.

Ok, this is it: #egu23 is over already! Pfiu, this went by rapidly and was, once again, intense!

My main takeaway from discussions is that quite a lot of #postdocs now work in one place but live in another. #WorkFromHome seems to be more broadly accepted than in pre-Covid times. Keep that in mind when negotiating your next postdoc position 😉

It is stunning that the heat record in Cordoba was almost 5 degrees C above the previous April record. This is statistically implausible without changes in the dynamics of weather activity (which in science we distinguish from thermodynamics). 7/x
