My latest on LinkedIn: These days, my fellow translators are posting about AI and little else. The posts tend towards one of two ideas: "AI is your friend—there’s nothing to worry about" or "Our profession is doomed! Dooooooomed!" Both are exaggerations.
We can survive as language professionals in the AI era, but must make adjustments.

As the character in "Cabaret" sang, "What good is sitting alone in your room...?" 🎶 So now for the first time, I'm making a point to get out of my translation office and am going to all sorts of events where direct clients can be found: conferences, trade shows, and lots of in-person networking events.
And so, for the first time in ages, I've had physical business cards printed. It feels like an almost retro thing to do. 😃

I'm excited to be going to the American Literary Translators Association conference this November in Tucson. 😀
I've always done *some* literary translation (mostly stage plays and nonfiction) in between my usual medical and business documents, but I spent much of 2022-23 on a book translation gig and really liked it. I'm hoping to pivot more toward literary translations, if I can just figure out how to find the gigs.

#Reading was down this month. The __Behold: Humanity__ series continues to be solid. Its episodic nature means you get a dozen different story threads in episodic chapters, so even if one or two aren't the best, the rest can still carry the narrative.
1983's _King of the Wood_ has an interesting #AlternateHistory setting: Refusing to convert to Christianity, some pagan Vikings settle the East Coast of North America in 995 CE. Christian Saxons flee Britain after William the Conqueror and take their own piece of the coast. Muslim Spanish settlers take Florida later. Amerind tribes remain significant polities, as do the Aztecs. Despite the promising setting, the story isn't fascinating, and was weakened by fantasy elements, IMO.

⧨ = Paratime Police Chronicles, Volume Two - John F Carr & H Beam Piper & Roland Green[1] I'm counting this as a novel for length purposes. I read this here and there over several months; I'm putting it on this month's calendar because I finally finished it. #koReader
[2] Finished all twelve of the science fiction short stories ever written by Clare Winger Harris wrote, who mostly wrote in the late 1920s and early 1930s. (Her final story was written decades later.)
It was popular in the 1920s to say that atoms were like solar systems, with electrons whirling about the nucleus like tiny planets. Many authors wrote stories where characters shrank down and ended up finding civilizations on one of these micro worlds.
Two of CWH's stories did the reverse, and considered that Earth was but an electron in a molecule of a larger scale existence, and examined what happened if we had been part of a solid that suddenly melted, for instance.

I notice that EU-based clients' vendor agreements increasingly include a clause granting the client the right to "inspect" and "audit" the place where I do my work, in order to ensure compliance. Do any other home-based workers think the prospect of letting strangers "inspect" and "audit" your home is incredibly creepy?

I think that the trick to physical fitness is to stop telling myself "Okay, when you get through today's work, as a reward, you can go to the gym" and instead start telling myself "Okay, if you get through this morning's workout, as a reward, you get to go home and translate stuff into English!"

After months of work, I'm finally translating the last page of a 400-page book from Portuguese into English. Of course, that means there's still 400 pages of editing and proofreading to go, but it still feels like a win. 😀

I've been taking a medical interpreting course through CUNY so I can diversify my business beyond document and book translations.
Decided to go old school and make hundreds of physical flashcards and take handwritten notes. Wow, my hand is not used to doing this much handwriting anymore! It's like a mini-workout. 😀

I love being in a profession where I have to know weird things like whether "blow job" is one word or two.
(Two words, according to Merriam-Webster. The term just turned up in a stage play I'm translating.)
It's such an educational profession.

It's weird: I keep getting emails from representatives of interpreting agencies who say they've read my profile on the American Translators Association website and have the perfect interpreting gig for me!
The thing is, I'm not an interpreter. Not yet, anyway. And there's nothing on my ATA profile that suggests I am. Every interpreting field on the profile is blank.
Some people just don't read.

I just spent a fascinating couple of weeks translating academic study guides into English, and now this week I have the entertaining challenge of making a theater character's smarmy double-entendres work in English. This is such a cool, challenging profession!

In recent years, I've gotten grants to translate plays by quite a few living playwrights from Spain. Now I'm compiling lists of English-language theater companies and their submission guidelines to help these writers pursue productions in English-speaking countries. 🙂

In translators' forums today, I've seen bizarre generalizations about our profession: "Translation isn't an art; it's a job" (as if we literary translators did not exist) and "We are not saving lives, so it is important to be realistic about deadlines" (as if we medical translators and other colleagues who do urgent life-saving work did not exist).
We need to work on being more aware and respectful of the breadth, scope, and importance of our profession.

I thought I was done with data migration projects when I left my IT career to become a translator. But now I'm busy restructuring 34 terminology databases as I move my business from one software package to another.
It feels good to flex the old information technology muscles for a week, though I'm much happier as a translator than I was as a professional techie. 😊

Still figuring out whether to switch my #translation business from one CAT tool to another: from #MemoQ to #CafeTran
In the test runs, I like the functionality better in CafeTran, but don't like that you apparently can only have three metadata fields attached to a TM segment. That means losing access to 20 years' worth of detailed metadata.
So far, that's the only drawback. I just need to ponder whether it's a deal breaker.... #translator

Book digitization projects like Google Books and Archive.org have been a boon to us translators. They offer free, easy access to reference material from past centuries, such as this 100-year-old French-English chemistry dictionary that I used constantly earlier this year when translating sample chapters of a book on the history of science.

Journalists seem to love writing about the revival of the Yiddish language among younger people.
They've been writing articles about this sudden and new Yiddish Revival since around 1968... which seems a long time to treat something as surprising and new (or, for that matter, as a revival). Also, does "revival" truly apply if the language in question never fell out of daily use in some communities?

#Translators: I'm thinking of switching from MemoQ to the newer CAT app #CafeTran, because I'd rather use my Linux laptop as my main work computer.
Have any of you made that switch? If so, do you feel you have similar functionality and agility in CafeTran? Or do you find yourself missing major features from MemoQ?
