Summary/Review:
In this unique work of speculative fiction, with elements of fantasy and alternate history, Minsoo Kang weaves together the mythology of an unnamed East Asian nation with the stories of contemporary historians. From the dawn of time, four mountain gods who were once friends have their squabbles over a forgotten slight play out with the rise and fall of human empires and the wars that destroy them. In another time, a storyteller attempts to save his life by spinning new stories for a despotic emperor.
And in the present day, a historian radically changes the understanding of his country’s history when he discovers certain historical texts were completely false and covered up for atrocities. After the death of his wife, the historian finds comfort in his friendship with a younger colleague, a woman also making new contributions the field of history. That friendship is threatened when their relationship becomes sexual.
This book is fascinating in that Minsoo Kang is making up and entire culture and mythology for these historians to study. The many storylines, disparate at first, tie together well as the novel continues. The storytelling expertly blends together philosophical debates, meditations on grief, and fart jokes.
