  1. Did you know? BookShelves has a built-in Calibre wireless server. Send books to KOReader on your e-ink reader over Wi-Fi, no cables needed. Reading progress syncs back automatically.

Anyone here using KOReader on a Kobo or PocketBook? What's your sync setup like?

  6. Did the thing, installed #KoReader on my #Kindle paperwhite 2. Stick it to the man!

  7. I've been working on an implementation in Go of the KOReader Sync stuff for a self-hostable sync server

    github.com/Brunty/koreader-sync

Are there others out there that also do this? Yes

Did this need to exist? Maybe not

Am I having fun working on it as it's a simple project to get to grips with some stuff in Go because I'm new to that language? Yes

Am I already using it as the target for KOReader Sync on my #PocketBook Era Color? Yes

  8. The ebook reader that i personally use is #koreader and #Readest

#koreader because of vocabulary builder, reading statistics, dictionary, syncing

    #readest for TTS functionality

awesome thing is that we can sync the page progress between #koreader and #readest

  9. You want to export your timeline, a specific tag, a list of followed accounts... in your pocket for an offline reading ?

    #SmolFedi permits it now!

You can choose, in prefs, the number of exported posts, CW/sensitive media inclusion, width of images...

  10. ✍️ I wrote a guide describing how I'm using the $69 Xteink X4 as a serious part of my reading workflow:

I love this ultra-portable notification-free reading environment that syncs with my KOReader devices!

💰 I'm sorry about your wallet!

  11. One of my biggest regrets from the past few years was losing the habit of reading books. All the usual excuses: child to look after, too tired, not enough time…

I didn’t read a ton, but I had an average of 30 books a year. Last year I must have read 6. This year in early April I was at 0… and the realization shook me to my core.

    Something had to be done.

I found out about KOreader and SimpleUI - having on an e-reader homepage a bar with reading stats would be an incredible motivator… I thought.

Jailbroke my #Kindle, installed #KOreader and #SimpleUI. And 18 days later I have… an 18 day reading streak and I’m averaging 43 minutes of reading time per day. I’m just so happy! 😊

(Unrelated but #Technofeudalism is REALLY GOOD - off to go resume reading it for another 20 minutes or so).

  17. #KOReader + #Kindle update:
Win: I installed a dictionary! Woohoo!

Fail: I've just installed a plugin called "Zen UI", in my quest to make KOReader look not-ugly. Restarted my Kindle, and I'm met with a "Welcome to Zen UI" screen which tells me to "swipe or tap Next to continue", neither of which I can do because my Kindle is not a touchscreen, and none of the physical buttons seem to do anything in this UI.
My device is now frozen on this screen. I'm going to cross my fingers and hope that a force-restart will open it in a state that allows me to connect it to my laptop and delete the Zen UI plugin.

Assuming this doesn't end up bricking my device, the search for a non-ugly KOReader __that can exist on a non-touchscreen Kindle__ will continue...

  18. @jacobscharmberg SP305590 from www.subtel.de ; they delivered reasonably fast in Germany. Also happy to see #instapaper replaced #pocket functionality in Kobos. There's also the #koreader functionality I haven't installed yet.

  19. I'm reading on my #Kindle in the late afternoon sun, using #KOReader. I just looked up a term in a book, had it pull up the Wikipedia article, and found out that KOReader has a "Save to EPUB" function for Wikipedia entries. I love that.

  20. Got myself a new not-a-Kindle #eReader that, with a bit of work, let's you setup your own sleep screens.

I also got #koReader setup on it as the default book reader and that's working great with progress syncing back to my #Calibre app on my computer.

  21. 👩‍💻 My So Called Sudo Life: Jailbroken Kindle edition 📖

If you followed my #Jailbreaking adventures this past week, I'd like to add a final chapter on the positive effect it had on my reading habits.

Long story short: I used to be an avid reader and I had sadly lost the habit of reading books in the last couple of years (blaming tiredness at the end of the day). I had been looking for a system to encourage me to get back on track. When I found out about #KOreader and #SimpleUI I was totally smitten: an elegant interface that kept track of my reading stats? Sign me up!

In the photo I've attached you can see my reading stats for the past week - aka since I started using KOreader and SimpleUI. If you don't want to squint / find it harder to read: my daily reading average is about 40 minutes. Not bad! I'm just absolutely delighted by this.

  22. If anyone else there is using KOReader on a jailbroken Kindle, there's a relatively new plugin for borrowing ebooks from your library via Libby/OverDrive:

    github.com/kaikozlov/acsm.kopl

At first it did not want to do anything at all on my device; it didn't even show up as a an option under "Open With ..." in the file browser. But, I realized that my installation of KOReader was a little out of date. Updating KOReader to the current version made the plugin function correctly.

    #KOReader

  23. @thibaultamartin I read using koreader on my Kobo. I believe there are stats hidden away somewhere in the system but I definitely do not see them.

Unless you turn the status bar on, the interface is just the text of the book you are reading. The only statistic I care about sometimes is how far through a book I am, just to know whether to keep on reading to finish a book or get some sleep instead. ;-)

  24. 👩🏻‍💻 my so-called sudo life - day 490: #KindleJailbreak edition 🆓

Regarding yesterday's post on the Kindle jailbreak: it is SO WORTH it.

I hope I didn't discourage anyone by saying how much I struggled with it. Well, I had a 15 YEAR OLD device and the online tutorials didn't work with it. I finally managed to install KUAL after finding a Reddit thread that gave step-by-step advice for the Kindle 4 gen.

I was really bummed that highlighting didn't work for it so I bit the bullet and got my hands on the cheapest e-reader I could find yesterday: a Kindle 11 gen with ads.

Mind you, I'm in the Italian countryside at the moment and it's a miracle they had it in stock at my local superstore. I would have preferred a Kobo but it is what it is.

Jailbreaking a recent Kindle is child's play. I was happy to see that it was not on the latest firmware, so it was easily jailbreakable.

    So:

    1. jailbreaking it
    2. installing a HotFix to prevent OTA updates
    3. installing KUAL
    4. installing KOreader
    5. installing SimpleUI
    6. removing ads
    7. installing custom transparent wallpapers
    8. transferring books to it

took a little over an hour. Easy peasy.

The backlight was great at 2:30am (I was woken up by my child coughing and couldn't easily fall back asleep). Very happy that I can do highlights in KOreader and now the ultimate test is how I can transfer the highlights to my computer / Calibre.

If you're on the fence, I'd say, go for it. This is the excellent guide I used: https://kindlemodding.org

For inspo: look up #KOreader and #SimpleUI homepages to realize what you could do

A blog post that chronicles what I have been up to since December... namely: advocating for the Fediverse, creating #selfhosting guides for newbies and experimenting with e-reader jailbreaks and off-grid mesh radio communications

  26. Every time my configuration gets borked, I end up tinkering with my #Kobo and figuring out more things you can do with the FOSS ecosystem that's accumulated around it. This time, it was simpleUI github.com/doctorhetfield-cmd/ and Kobo sync integration ogkevin.github.io/kobo.koplugi , which together made me realize that I hadn't paid nearly enough attention to the #KOReader plugin options. I'm steadily creeping toward preferring it over Kobo's Nickel OS.

  27. Default #koReader is... hard, but this plugin changes that just dropping the folder in its place and almost zero configuration

  28. I just discovered that there's actually a plugin to have an actually pretty interface on !

Here's how it looks on my Clara 2E! But it's super customizable and has a lot of modules and ways to arrange things, enjoy!

  29. I love what’s achievable with Free Software.

I can sync reading progress across my e-reader with #koreader, my phone with #readest and I’ve now hacked together a way of syncing them with #emacs Nov mode. The code needs cleaning up a bit and I’ll put it on Codeberg soon.

  30. Finally got #Wallabag working through Docker! For some reason that was completely opaque to me, it was a complete ball-ache to get working with my proxy manager, but finally it works!

I've been using #Karakeep up until now as my article bookmark/read-it-later app, which works really well, but I really wanted to make use of the #KOReader Wallabag integration to read saved articles on my eBook reader.

Was it worth it? Almost certainly not.

Anyway, next on my list to figure out - FitTrackee.

  31. Enjoying my old refreshed with . The guide worked like a charm for a 2017 firmware model and cannot decide which feature is the best so far. (Heart says it's the terminal emulator :allthethings: )

  32. I’m a big fan of #koreader but I recently found #readest which I think is better suited to non e-ink displays. They’re also working on being able to sync with KOreader.

  33. In "The Raid on the Termites" (Paul Ernst, 1932), an #entomologist daydreams about being shrunk to ant-size and exploring a #termite mound. His friend finds the notion of being “suddenly confronted by a thing as big as a horse, with fifteen-foot jaws of steely horn that could slice [him] in two” exciting. Jim imagines writing a book:

“What a book of travel it would make! ‘The Raid on the Termites. Exploring an Insect Hell. Death in an Ant-hill…’”
      “Termitary! Termitary!” corrected Denny irritably.

Doing a long press on the word, what sayeth Wiktionary in #koReader?

_Termitary: an anthill built and occupied by termites._
