🔓 #KindleJailbreak chronicles - day 39 📖
I'm sharing this in case it can motivate other people with e-readers to get back to steady reading habits.
I setup a jailbroken Kindle with #KOreader and #SimpleUI a little over a month ago (39 days to be exact).
I had been missing reading books and I knew that with quantification / a clear metric showing minutes spent reading every day I could get back in the habit.
For context, ever since I started tracking my step count, I've been averaging over 10,000 steps a day - for 7 YEARS now!
Anyway, 39 days in and my daily reading average (over the last 7 days) has been 56 minutes/day. I was aiming for 30. I guess that it also helps that Suzanne Collins is a great writer 😅
A side effect of reading so much is that writing feels effortless now. The words just flow.
Yesterday I published a deep dive on W Social (ICYMI): https://blog.elenarossini.com/the-untold-story-about-w-social-unconventional-beginnings-strategic-pitches-conflicting-signals/
Wishing you all a great day!

Looking for documentation on how the book status (or reading status) feature works in #KOReader -- it's unclear to me whether there's any automation to it and what the criteria are for the "abandoned" status, and I'm also unable to change the book status in my Koreader app on Android (tapping any status options brings up a review dialogue but won't change the book's status). Official Koreader docs don't seem to mention the feature at all. Hints appreciated!

Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 05-22-26
I was too busy yesterday to put together my daily Pook-Emu Bee links. I am busy today as well, but not too busy to take a link break. Article Links 1. Six search engines worth trying now that Google isn’t really Google anymore (Amanda Siberlin for TechCrunch. May 21, 2026.) This is a fair list but the article misses some nuance about the sources used by Startpage and Ecosia. I would add Mojeek to the selection. 2.

This guy here is a #Kindle 4.
It's #Jailbroken... almost. The Jailbreak finished successfully, buuuut.
I can't install #MKK. The update .bin file fails on me over and over again, and #Kubrick won't boot on anything I own, even tried an old Thinkpad.
So... #Mobi or nothin? I got it as a backup to my 10th-gen #Paperwhite. It's usable. Just wish I had #Koreader dangit. -

Did you know? BookShelves has a built-in Calibre wireless server. Send books to KOReader on your e-ink reader over Wi-Fi, no cables needed. Reading progress syncs back automatically.
Anyone here using KOReader on a Kobo or PocketBook? What's your sync setup like?

I've been working on an implementation in Go of the KOReader Sync stuff for a self-hostable sync server
https://github.com/Brunty/koreader-sync
Are there others out there that also do this? Yes
Did this need to exist? Maybe not
Am I having fun working on it as it's a simple project to get to grips with some stuff in Go because I'm new to that language? Yes
Am I already using it as the target for KOReader Sync on my #PocketBook Era Color? Yes

The ebook reader that i personally use is #koreader and #Readest
#koreader because of vocabulary builder, reading statistics, dictionary, syncing
#readest for TTS functionality
awesome thing is that we can sync the page progress between #koreader and #readest

✍️ I wrote a guide describing how I'm using the $69 Xteink X4 as a serious part of my reading workflow:
I love this ultra-portable notification-free reading environment that syncs with my KOReader devices!
💰 I'm sorry about your wallet!

One of my biggest regrets from the past few years was losing the habit of reading books. All the usual excuses: child to look after, too tired, not enough time…
I didn’t read a ton, but I had an average of 30 books a year. Last year I must have read 6. This year in early April I was at 0… and the realization shook me to my core.
Something had to be done.
I found out about KOreader and SimpleUI - having on an e-reader homepage a bar with reading stats would be an incredible motivator… I thought.
Jailbroke my #Kindle, installed #KOreader and #SimpleUI. And 18 days later I have… an 18 day reading streak and I’m averaging 43 minutes of reading time per day. I’m just so happy! 😊
(Unrelated but #Technofeudalism is REALLY GOOD - off to go resume reading it for another 20 minutes or so).

#KOReader + #Kindle update:
Win: I installed a dictionary! Woohoo!Fail: I've just installed a plugin called "Zen UI", in my quest to make KOReader look not-ugly. Restarted my Kindle, and I'm met with a "Welcome to Zen UI" screen which tells me to "swipe or tap Next to continue", neither of which I can do because my Kindle is not a touchscreen, and none of the physical buttons seem to do anything in this UI.
My device is now frozen on this screen. I'm going to cross my fingers and hope that a force-restart will open it in a state that allows me to connect it to my laptop and delete the Zen UI plugin.Assuming this doesn't end up bricking my device, the search for a non-ugly KOReader __that can exist on a non-touchscreen Kindle__ will continue...

@jacobscharmberg SP305590 from www.subtel.de ; they delivered reasonably fast in Germany. Also happy to see #instapaper replaced #pocket functionality in Kobos. There's also the #koreader functionality I haven't installed yet.
